If this is the wrong forum, please move this thread.

Imagine that someone programs a simulated universe, which follows all of our laws of physics. This program runs for quite some time and suns, planets and moons begins to form. On one planet, life is born. This life evolves into human-like life forms with the ability to think, have feelings and each individual have even got a consciousness. These simulated life forms begins to invent things and reaches our level of technology.

Would it be ethical to turn off the program?

Yes, but only if those people's soulsare saved, for the next time the rpogram is booted up.

That would be useful for adding new hard drives and incresaing data space, would it not?

This make you think, what if there is a God who can just shut us down anytime we cause a threat to his universe?

If we're just programs, that would be impossible for us to be a threat.

Ha... funny.

To be honest though... I don't think it would be all that okay to freeze life.

I mean, those people would have become sel\ntient, so t's like killing a person in rael life... did somebody just holler genocide?

What about the people outside of the machine, the ones who don't get frozen?

The people outside of the machine aren't supposed to interact with the people inside, though. At least, if you want it to be like our world.

The program would have to be in a computer capable of harming someone (without being thrown), and the people in it would have to be able to control the part of the computer that can cause this harm. In a simulation like this, they wouldn't even know they were in a computer.

[edit] Keh. Webcam's too crappy to take a pic of the real world this time of night.

No, but they would then be living people, in the sense that they are sentient, and can form their own thoughts, just like you.

you wouldn't want to be frozen, would you, so why do it to someone else?

If absolutely everything froze for a while, you wouldn't know. It'd have no effect on the world, unless some part wasn't frozen (eg something was using real time). It's just like a save state, hence the joke.

There is a book at my school that talks about Math, time, and existance crap. This thing is bigger than the dictionary.

That's a good point to do that at. When math gets religious, someone has been smoking something.
