Here I am on the phone talking to SBC while typing this to find out THEY screwed up my bill again, talk about being money hungry. Who knows how long I'll be on hold to find out why they upped my dsl pro (3008kbps down/512 up) from $24.95 (1 year contract) to $36. I mean aren't BOTH parties supposed to honor a contract? Now here I am bein transferred for the 3rd fuggin time. These people fail for even having customer service.

Unfortunately I can't get anything better than what I have now (middle of nowhere). And it seems no one wants to help me, they said I should get a call from the supervisor tomorrow but I highly doubt it. This is complete and utter bullshit. If I had the funds I would move out of this shithole town and someplace nice, around the California, Oregon, or Washington area.

In Australia we have a body called the Telecommuncations Industry Ombudsman (TIO) that you can complain to if your service provider / telephone company / etc isn't honoring their contract / overcharging / etc.

The TIO will investigate your claims and can fine the company if they're doing the wrong thing.

I have had overchargings refunded because of this. The company "mysteriously" found that I *had* cancelled my service and that they should repay me the money they'd been taking from my credit card... but only after I took it up with the TIO.

I'm sure there's such a body for US stuff; so see if that helps.

I might just tell them to cancel my dsl and begin looking at high speed cable (with stuff to watch of course) They obviously cant slap me with the $200 cancellation fee since they are in a breach of contract.

Yeah, SBC does suck, I've had "service" from them before. We cancelled that when we moved and switched to a company that doesn't suck (as much).

AOL are in Australia, they call themselves "Australia Online" and most people avoid them. I don't know if they've given up on the Australian market yet or not actually, but I used to be stuck with AOL once, and it was evil.

As for the comment about the company not being able to slap you with a cancellation fee -- if they think they can get away with it, they will. And if you refuse to pay it, they will chase you with debt collectors.

For chrissake, if they're giving you this much grief, contact whatever your equivalent is to the TIO -- or whatever your equivalent is to Consumer Affairs. There WILL be groups / bodies that prevent companies from abusing their clients in that way.

The BBB is someone you may want to talk to..

I too have SBC and well, I haven't been shafted yet but I tried talking to customer service about a week ago and they said if I wanted to renew my contract of 3Mpbs down service, the rates have to be raised to $59 . Also, I found out in that same call is if I didn't call in to actually cancel or renew, they would have done it anyways. Of course with customer service like this, it would make sense to defect to another company. However, they have the cheapest deals in my area compared to earthlink and speakeasy

This I don't doubt. Although they are not the only ISP in the world that sucks. Thankfully they were NOT the ones that overcharged me and I had to take to the TIO. That was a company called iHug.

It would be worth trying anyways, as they may be able to at least point you in the right direction if they are unable to help directly.

Ok, today the Customer Service Supervisor called me and straightened everything out real quick especially when I mentioned these words, "breach of contract" and "class action lawsuit". They immediately dropped my dsl not from $36 to $25 but from $36 all the way down to $21 for my dsl pro until the end of June. You know what they say "the customer is always right"

And in end of June I will just cancel (after contract ends) and get a rerate for the same price.

Yay! Too many companies try to walk all over customers, but it's good to know that they fixed this.

Then, a lot of companies count on their customers being unaware of their rights.

are you sure it is until the end of june (i.e 6 months) and not for one year? Because I heard the same deal from SBC (same customer service call) and after 6 months, it goes back to $36...

Who knows, maybe by then a better ISP will be available. If you ever get the chance to get Cogeco and can live with a 15GB/month bandwidth limit (for $50/month, or 30GB for something like $65), do it. No shitty software required and the tech support is freaking awesome. (Also, if it's of any benefit to you, your IP only changes like once every 16 months. )
