Well, it seemes that Bush has illegally engaged in wiretapping and invasion of privacy without leave from the courts. This is technically the same thing that Richard Nixon did, and I believe that he was going to be impeached for it, but stepped down first. Any comments?

Bush has violated Constitutional and International law. Under International law, Bush could be tried as a war criminal by the same law Nazi leaders were tried under (Sec. 51, I think). He deserves to be arrested and put in prison.

Godwin's Law should not be evoked. Since you decided to evoke it Geeogree, without reading his post for the content, you automatically "lose" the debate. It was a comparison of Bush to a war criminal (which he is under international law) not calling Bush a NAZI.

pffft.... close enough
it's not like anyone is going to do it.... he's been in power for 6 years and no one has stopped him.... what is likely to change? |

So, geeogree...Are you going to contribute or can I just label you a troll on this thread and ask you to leave?

Bush, is like a Nazi as in they broke the same international law. That does not make Bush a Nazi per se. To help you relate, An apple is like an orange, because they are both fruits. That, however, does not mean apples are oranges. (edited by Wurl on 12-27-05 05:43 PM) |

I'd be surprised if people do care about this.
I dunno, but it seems to me like a lot of things have changed since the days of Nixon and a lot of people don't seem to care anymore -- or worse, say everything's "okay" cause it was done to "fight terrorism" or something. Personally I'd like to see Bush held to account for this. But I don't hold my breath for it happening either. |

Other people who have violated international law.
The Japanese. Italy. Britain. Soviet Union/Russia. China. Israel. Saudi Arabia. Iraq. The list is long. But this isn't like some little "welll...FORESTRY!" issue. These are WAR CRIMES. |

and who/how do you suggest these problems are fixed?

Strengthen the mandate of international institutions to allow them to police the nations of the world so that they don't commit things like...INSTITUTIONALIZED TORTURE!

hrm.... so, which international organizations do you have in mind that can do this?

Are you really so dense as not to, I don't know, just say what's on your mind?
I know you're going to go "DAMNED LIBERALS WITH THEIR UN". But that is not my answer. I suggest strengthening the ICC, although an organ of the UN, it should have the powers to actually prosecute leaders by utilizing economic methods. This would level the playing field with the corrupt and defunct Security Council. |

well.... you want to give more power to an organization that barely does anything anymore and itself is corrupt from top to bottom?

I totally agree. The whole system is open to corruption and abuse.

What gets me about this, is that he had been giving permission to the NSA to do this. They might as well of been asking permission from me, the constitution gives me just as much jurisdiction over this (none).
Then he has the nerve to call those who informed the public criminals. |

I have a serious question.
What influence does the patriot act have in this situation. Is there any way that that act could have some sort of permission for wire-tapping? |

geeogree is right. Because of the Patriot Act, everything done by any government official is okay as long as it can be connected in whatever convoluted and obtuse way to counterterrorism. Bush could probably sexually abuse the Constitution and get away with it.
And I'm sorry, Comedy Central, for stealing your line. |
