Chobits (Dual English/Japanese)
Dragonball GT (Dual English/Japanese)

Woah, thats it?

Not much to work with....ok. Lets see what I can do.

There are literally hundreds of anime worth watching out there. The trick is finding the ones that each individual person likes best. You seem to be knee deep into the shounen anime (shounen = young boys. I'll go into the differences between shounen, shoujou, and other genres some other time...if I remember) so I'm going to use that as a building block and make comparisons between what Im reccomending and what youve got listed.

First on the list for sure (and everyone is either going to cheer me or throw stuff at me for this) has got to be Naruto. Anime or manga, doesnt matter, but beware that its already very long, so you'll have your work cut out for you catching up. It's about a young ninja (naruto) who is fresh out of the ninja academy of Konohagakure (The Village Hidden in the Leaves, generally referred to as Konoha, or Leaf Village.) In fact, the first episode/chapter details how he finally manages to pass the exam (on his third try) and finally become both an adult and a full fledged rookie ninja (genin.) The catch is that Naruto has sealed within him the kyuubi, or nine tailed demon fox. A demon of such size and power that the third hokage (hokage = fire shadow, the chief of konoha) actually had to sacrifice his own life to seal the kyuubi within the orphan Naruto when it attacked the village eleven years ago. Now, this is no fault of Naruto's of course, but everyone still hates him and treats him like dirt because of it. So Naruto makes it his goal to one day become the greatest ninja in the village, the Hokage, himself, so that everyone will HAVE to respect him! At the end of the first episode he makes his first friend, and from then on its about the trials and tribulations of being a young ninja for Naruto himself, and many others as he starts to make more friends. It great both as an anime and a manga, with great action and wonderful storytelling. Highly reccomended. This is shounen at its finest. Souda souya! HA!

If ninjas arent your thing, you could go for pirates instead with One Piece. Half the story as naruto, but ten times as silly, with great characters, good action, and a fun time all the way. You can always expect good action combined with lots of laughs here, it makes sure to never take itself too seriously. However, Im not nearly as far in this as most fans are (I think its actually even longer than Naruto o.O though neither have ended yet) so I'm going to leave it there and just say that if you like pirates, or even if you dont, this is good stuff.

Last stops on the out and out shounen train are Shaman King, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Bleach.

Yu Yu Hakusho is a little older now, but it's comparable to dbz, except there are more "special abilities" instead of "Look how fast I can punch and kick while he dodges them all!" and a better story as well. Its about Yuusuke Urameshi, who gets hit by a car and dies trying to save a little boy. But Yusuke's a punk and noone in the underworld thought he might try to save the little boy, so it wasnt actually his time to die. Having no room for him, they bring him back to life. But one of the side effects of this is that he now has special "spirit powers" that most humans dont have, so he comes under employment as a "spirit detective." IE: Its up to him to beat all the bad nasties who break out of the underworld and cause trouble for the humans. Its an older show now, so you probably wont hear too much about it anymore, but its still good stuff.

Shaman King is kinda sorta similer, though less "action" and a little more story. Its about You Asakura, who's a shaman. That is, he can communicate, and in some cases integrate with ghosts. That is, he can use his body as a conduit for the ghosts soul, thereby becoming able to make use of its knowledge or skills or what have you. Well some stuff happens, and then the Shaman Fight starts, where shaman from all over the world gather to compete for the title of Shaman King and the right to speak with the Great Spirit (aka God) and reshape the world as they see fit. Its more complicated than that, but I really like this one. Good stuff. Oh, and I dont know about the anime, but the manga is all narrated from the viewpoint of You's friend Manta, which is kinda cool. Dao Shi Tao Jun also wins with Bason. DAO DAN DO!

Wow, this post got kinda long, didnt it? I was gonna talk about Bleach, and then some less shounen stuff, but I'll break it off here for now. If you want more, just ask, but for now I'll let someone else take over. Ive only seen a few eps of bleach yet anyway.

I considered adding Yu Yu Hakusho to the list, but realized that most people probably had never heard of it and would just toss it aside. Mind you, I stopped watching it right before the last episode, and that was a heart breaker.

Naruto just seems to sum up everything great about anime these days: good music, good animation, great stories, big twist (ZOMG Naruto changed his clone into a shurikan and then threw a knife that's the ROXORS!!1!), and wityness up the ying yang. There's a marathon of the first twenty or so episodes coming up this New Years Eve on Toonami, so go watch.

One Piece never hooked on me. Seems a bit childish, despite all the action. The game is fun though! =P

And Generic... Holiday... Username, guy. I did mention Read or Die, cuz holy shit, look at her. She can make a sword out of paper. Talk about a paper cut. Mind you, I haven't had time to watch the series, but the movie was definantly up there with the top ones I've seen. And Wolf's Rain... I dunno, I guess I never got hooked. That guy who dressed like a jigalo in leather scared me away, I guess.

Witch Hunter Robin, I forgot to mention that. That's a good series. Not the story, or the characters, or even the animation. But for some reason, it just rang of total goodness.

And let me re-elaborate on Case Closed. Best-show-ever. Screw the fact that the animation is from the '80s, or that the chances of that many murders happening in their vincinity is highly unlikely. No matter how hard you worked at solving the murder, they would always toss the real culprit at you out of nowhere. And then here would be the clues, and you know what? They were there the entire time! Awsome! Plus, the fact that there's a bajillion episodes and a munchkin detective hiding his identity helps to.

But you know what? I can't believe I forgot it, and I'm so ashamed.

Trust me, any anime you list will probably get watched. Currently I am acquiring Ai Yori Aoshi so don't think I am just looking for specific types, just surprised no one even mentioned the father (or mother?) of them all, Galaxy express 999 (the original, very good but weird)

:EDIT: And please don't mention Groups (read between the lines) I do not want this thread to get purged/locked/etc.

I also remember a friend of mine who used to go by the screen name of Yusuke until I picked on him about it calling him "you sucky". Now before you try and flame me I can speak a little bit of Japanese (Pimsleur's 1, 2, & 3 were hard to find but worth it.)

Um...no. The first anime was not Galaxy express 999, it was Astro Boy. Or was that just the first manga.....either way, 999 wasnt the first. Its just a classic.

You watch too much dubbed anime. Get away from the tv and on the computer. Most anime you see on american television is edited. Some more than others, but 99% of it is censored in some way. And the acting isnt generally as good (there are exceptions to this.) I could go on all day about the hows and whys of subs vs dubs, but long story short: The internet is still the best place for anime, followed closely by dvds (which are best found on the internet =P.) If you're a fan of the Naruto dub, and you've never seen the sub, thats just....wow. Do yourself a favor, hop over to your friendly neighbourhood anime bt tracker, and grab the first 25 episodes. You'll be glad you did.

I have seen the Japanese episodes of Naruto. Sure is a lot more yelling in them. =/

But I have a 56k connection, so it wouldn't work to well for me to just bittorrent episodes. I did manage to download FF7: Last Order, but it was 200 Mb, and took about 4 days.

*looks at SuperKawaiiNeko's signature* Yeah I would have to agree with you as far as the sub vs dub goes. I just cannot stand dubbed japanese anime. I prefer subbed simply because it helps me learn more japanese. (audio, not text)

And stop mentioning piracy. I'd rather not see this list of anime go down the drain.

Right, sorry. Back on topic, or close to it, on the problems of English subbing.

With a lot of todays English-subbed anime, the same people get voice overs for different series. So you end up watching Gundam Seed, and hear one of Kira's friends say something, and OMG THAT SOUNDS LIKE INUYASHA WTF!?! Also, unlike Japan, where anime is considered the "in" thing and actors stick with their characters voice overs, in America voice overs frequently switch around. I still remember watching that Ruroni Kenshin movie, forgot the name, and the only one who sounded the same as the TV series was Kenshin himself.

So, meh. Considering the situation for lot's of us anime-obsessed kids, English subs will have to do. Or manga, if we just want to go for the real experience.

I think it was Kai who put it best when she said something along the lines of "I dont really speak japanese. I speak anime and jpop." IE: anime japanese is generally NOT AT ALL a representation of common use japanese, and while its useful to stay in practice shouldnt really be used to "learn" the language. I had a bunch of other stuff typed up on the topic, but I think its too much so I'll kill this one here.

And stop mentioning piracy. I'd rather not see this list of anime go down the drain.

Not much you can do about that when youre talking about anime, seeing as how the vast majority of it remains unenglishified (like that word?)

First, I'm going to assume you meant english DUBBING. As in, dubbing the english voices over the japanese ones, as opposed to leaving the japanese voice tracks and simply inserting english subtitles.

Secondly...um...this is actually very common in Japan, as well. From a certain perspective, even more so than here. There are seiyuu (voice actors/actresses) who are actually even more popular themselves than the roles they play, their fans following every stage of their career even more religiously than they follow the shows that theyve voiced in. The be all end all proof of this point is, of course, Megumi Hayashibara, who's life's goal seems to be to have a part in every anime ever made (even going back in time to land parts in anime and games that have already been completed.) Look her up on IMDB if you dont believe me. And, honestly, she's just the tip of the iceberg. Theres an entire subculture devoted to seiyuu, both in Japan and in america.

The real reason english dubs have a tendency to suck is the same reason most things in this world succeed or fail.

Money.

In Japan, anime is big business. I've heard it said that their anime industry is bigger than their live action industry. Now, I dont know if this is true, but it certainly wouldnt suprise me. What I *DO* know is that while (contorary to american belief) anime in japan *is* considered to generally be for slighty younger audiences, it's still extremely widespread and accepted. Top of the line seiyuu get paid the big bucks to do what they do, and have a tendancy to get so big that they even start to branch out into other media (like singing.)

Cartoons in america are another matter. In america, cartoons are considered to be a low cost high payout "investment." Cartoons are for kids, and kids dont care. Cheap art and "second rate" talent in place of sets, props and equipment and "legitimate" actors can be thrown together fairly easily. And the best part is, kids are big business. If its a hit, you can market the hell out of it. If its not, who cares? You'll have already made a profit over your original investment just through advertising, ready to try again and again until you strike gold. Anime is even better, where you dont even have to make any of it yourself. Just translate the script (optional?) and throw some people at it till they say the lines. Again, kids wont know the difference, right? And its gotta be kids, teens and adults wont buy the toys and crap. So everything gets remarketed to them, which is how we end up with such monstrosities as Cardcaptors.

High quality english dub translations are possible, and HAVE occoured on occasion. Anyone who doesnt believe me hasnt watched cowboy bebop or played any recent metal gear. But those were not done for TV, nor did they have a tv budget. This is why american tv dubs in particular suck so bad. Though other dubs have a tendancy to suck as well, for very similer reasons. Anyway, its 3:40 am, and I should have been asleep fifteen hours ago, and this is running long anyway, so I'll get into that some other time...maybe. I'll reread this after I wake up to make sure I didnt say anything blatantly wrong or stupid or otherwise embarrass myself. *snore*

Well.. there are different genres. So I'll list some good stuff with descriptions.

Hajime no Ippo (Boxing. I know you probably hate boxing, I don't care, it's the best anyway. Really, give it a try.)
GTO (Former gang leader goes teacher. Funny. This has been licensed forever but wasn't on your list.)
Yakitate! Japan (Baking.. uh.. yeah.. it's a bread anime. Funny.)
Ueki no Housoku (You'll probably find it under the name of The Law of Ueki. Comedy/Fighting about school kids fighting to decide who becomes the new god.)
Tenshi na Konamaiki (Girl who decides she's actually a boy and also acts that way.. she happens to be the hottest girl in town too. Comedy .)
Gundam (You pick what series, they're all good mecha. The new SEED series are pretty fastpaced if you like that.)
Sexy Commando Gaiden (I guess you could call this comedy.. just don't try to understand it)
Yuusha Series (For example Yuusha-ou GaoGaiGar if you want something that's done, or Yuusha Tokkyuu Might Gaine. This is mecha you'll most likely never see dubbed, lovely mix of rather silly humor while still managing to be super serious and awesome when it matters (well.. GaoGaiGar manages, haven't watched the others far enough yet))
