Some of y'all might've heard of a few moves.

* Boston gets Josh Beckett, Mike Lowell, and Guillermo Mota from Florida for prospects Hanley Ramirez, Anibal Sanchez, Harvey Garcia, and Jesus Delgado.

* Mets get Carlos Delgado and cash money from Florida for Mike Jacobs, Yusmeiro Petit, and some other prospect.

* Phillies send Jim Thome and buckets of money to the White Sox for Aaron Rowand, a minor leaguer, and a player to be named later (rumored to be highly-regarded prospect Gio Gonzalez).

Your analysis:

* Florida reloads with good prospects, although Hanley's overrated (he's all tools). Buuuut...
* The Red Sox made out like bandits here. Beckett looks to have turned the corner on his blister issues. Mota's a live arm, possibly for set-up or closing (should Foulke suck) duty, and Lowell has no expectations. He's a high-quality defensive player and athletic enough that last season could prove to be just a fluke and not falling off a cliff.
* The Mets can afford to overpay for offense, and Delgado brings just that. He might have signed with them last year as a free agent, but word is he was offended by negotiators using "street Spanish" when he's an urbane and well-educated fellow. Regardless, 1B was an area of supersuck for them last season, and Delgado does a lot more than just not suck.
* Phillies get a good defensive CF and, more importantly, unload Thome's gigundo contract, also making room for Ryan Howard to play full-time.
* White Sox make the move they needed, mercifully replacing Carl Everett/whoever else at DH with Thome. That's assuming they re-sign Konerko, which they very well could. If not, Thome plays 1B, no biggie. It might mean no more Frank Thomas, but he's broken down at this point and could call it a very good, possibly Hall of Fame? career.

You could of posted this in the baseball thread. I don't care about much about Mets and Padres. They never had a good team since whenever. The big money teams always make it in the playoffs, but thats not always true though.

Are you a mod? I don't think so.

The other guy in the Delgado trade was some guy named Grant Psomas, I think.

The Mets were trying to woo Billy Wagner with a 3 year $30 million deal with an option for 2009, which would increase it to $40 Million.

The Blue Jays signed B.J. Ryan for $47 Million.

And everyone's trying to get A.J. Burnett...

Ah yes, Grant Psomas. Because we all know about the woes the Mets have at 3B.

5/$47 for B.J. Ryan proves that J.P. Riccardi doesn't have any sense of a budget. But then again, you kind of need to not have one in the AL East. Speaking of which, sounds like Burnett might go to Baltimore. Supposedly, wifey wants him to sign there.

Yankees were supposedly looking at Rowand to replace Bernie, but now the big name bandied about is Brian Giles. And you thought Bernie Williams in center was an adventure.

The A's have signed Esteban Loaiza to a 3 year deal.
The Mets have signed Billy Wagner to a 4 year deal.
The Marlins traded Luis Castillo to the Twins for a couple minor leaguers.
The Yankees have signed Kyle Farnsworth
The Phillies have signed Tom Gordon

Giants landed Morris--i think he is overpaid with this contract and the giants are taking a big gamble (considering injury problems as of late). However, maybe by reunited with matheny will do him some good?

neotransotaku: Entirely possible.

Oh, and the Red Sox, as I'm sure you've seen, shipped Renteria off to Atlanta in exchange for Andy Marte. Amazingly, Kevin Youkilis has not been traded yet. Maybe they figure he'll take over at 1B. Dunno how his defense is, but they've got Lowell at third, who ain't that bad with the glove.

There were a whole ton of other transactions, but I'm too lazy to get 'em all down now.

The Tigers opted for 41-year old Kenny Rogers to be (likely) the #1 or 2 starter, and 37 year old Todd Jones to be their new closer. I guess it was better to do that than to shell out ridiculous sums of money to get Bj Ryan and Aj Burnett, although this team has a knack for making such high-risk transactions, which both of those are. At least this time they're only 2 year deals. The signings aren't going to make things much easier for them, with 57 games coming against the White Sox, Indians, and Twins.

I think the White Sox have to be the favorites for 06 so far. On paper they look even better than last year at this point.

Hey, the Tigers also gave Percival two years, and look what happened.

At this point, transaction-mania has kind of thrown all the experts for a loop, so I'll go ahead and say it right now.

Yep, and now they only have to eat Percival's salary one more year, unlike when they were paying Bobby Higginson and Damion Easley multi-millions to bat .200 and/or play golf.

Lol at the Royals...I guess all the players they're signing means they're giving up on a lot of their young players. That franchise has a serious deficiency of talent, though. Hard to believe they're only 2 years removed from an actual pennant chase. The teams of the last two years haven't really been too much different from that contending team.

The city of Cleveland is more cursed than Boston or Chicago or any of those championship-deprived franchises ever was.

Seriously though, I must admit I was pulling for the Tribe to make the playoffs last year, despite them normally being my second most hated team besides the Yankees. I like the make-up of that team, and they were far more deserving of a playoff spot than the Red Sox or Yankees were (and proved to be), even with that complete meltdown they incurred during the last week of the season.

The Indians and White Sox just might be the two best teams in baseball now, and it's funny because only a year ago people were saying 80 wins would be enough to win the Al Central.

Yeah, it was too bad we had to fizzle out at the end of the season. As for myself, I hate the Yanks and the Red Sox the most. A distant third is the Marlins.

And the last time a pro sports team won a championship in Cleveland was the Browns in 1964-- before the Super Bowl came to be.

Psst: I was kidding about the Royals.

In "holy shit balls" news, Johnny Damon has signed for four years, $52 million.

Yes, with the Yankees.

Oh, and the Rangers have agreed to trade Chris Young the Pitcher, Adrian Gonzalez, and Terrmel Sledge (from Soriano trade fame) to San Diego for Adam Eaton, Akinori Otsuka, and 3B prospect Billy Killian. Not official yet because Otsuka's in Japan right now.

And, uhm, Tony Graffanino (Red Sox) and Travis Lee (Tampa Bay) accepted arbitration.

I openly cried. -.-

Honestly, once things like the Red Sox winning the world series happen, you start to think of them as being loyal to the team. Then BOOM! The Yankees offer a bigger deal, and Jesus leaves the Sox.

God hopes Ortiz won't do the same. I might lose all of my recently-regained team spirit if that happens.

Well, since this is the ongoing off-season thread, let's look at the World Baseball Classic. The US still has that embargo going against Cuba, remember? Well, ever since taking office, Bush and the Republicans have curried favor among Cuban refugees in Florida by taking a hard-line stance against Castro. (This is a fact.) So while the Orioles and Cuban national team had played a couple of exhibitions in the late 90's, now a department of the federal government has stepped in and said no Cuba in the WBC. Consequently, they're still working this out, Puerto Rico's pulled out as a host, and annoyance reigns supreme.

Wanna see the rosters? They're here. Only includes players who've played in the majors recently, and we're talking the smallest cups of coffee (maybe even a demitasse). I think this list also includes several prospects, as a quick glance shows Glenn Williams and Justin Huber on Australia's roster.

Wondering why Mike Piazza, Frank Catalanotto and Matt Mantei, among others, are on Italy's roster, despite being US-born? They're using quite liberal eligibility rules for this, where if you can get a passport from a country, you can play for them. So it might be that they have parents who satisfy one of the three eligibility rules.

Keep in mind these are just the players who've played in the majors. Don't know about other players, but I'm fairly certain that the Netherlands will have a full team, not just Andruw Jones. (Oh, and one of my girlfriend's cousins, albeit not all that closely related, is on Puerto Rico's roster. YAY.)
