Actually, I think the island is part of the terrain...

Yes, the island is a part of the terrain...how about moving the island high into the sky, making it a hell to reach it with the cannons??

Now that I know I won't add stuff in the first release, I guess the first thing I'll do is to change the front door (and the warp if it has one) to a random place. I'll put a Chomp next to Toad and change the lava level into an ice level (It was possible to edit the level propertipes in the beta, didnt it?)

I don't know about the rest of you, but I was a little disapointed by the logo choice by vl-tone.

I was thinking something more like this:

i wasnt talking about the actual island thats already there. vl-tone already said loads of levels contain island type objects like whomps fortress or bowsers levels.

If everything is handed to u on a plate then its not really hacking is it? very similar to lunar magic.. it being able to do everything meant we got a stupid abundance of crap hacks which at first were great cause it was something new. but they'll eventually get tedious. im looking forward to some of the really good mario design i know hackers here are capable of.

Oh and claiming vl-tone as god is incorrect.. Miyamoto is god vl-tone is maybe one of his deciples.

I would prefer "Teresa obake 64" as the editor name, I just don't like the name toadstool... but whatever, the editor is not mine.

If everything is handed to u on a plate then its not really hacking is it?

Actually yes, hacking is modify the game like you want. Id doesn't matter if you change some RAM adresses, if you make a graphics change, if you change the level or even put a piece of paper with a mario drawing on the screen, it's still hacking. (well, the last thing maybe not XD)

It doesn't matter if you edit the levels with an hex editor or with an easy to use editor, you're still doing the same. If someone hacks SMW levels with an hex editor (assuming he's doing the same things we can do with LM) then he is just a completely idiot that wastes his time showing the others "hahaha look you noobs my super duper skills" instead of using that skills to do something really usefull like finding other games data or doing new things in SMW. (Sorry if someone fells offended, I'm not refering to anyone, it's just an example of person)

(EDIT: I just hope this doesn't bring the ROMcrapping to SM64...)

Oh and claiming vl-tone as god is incorrect.. Miyamoto is god vl-tone is maybe one of his deciples

no, VL would be a semi-god XD

I think what you are thinking about is called a "platform". Platforms are objects and can be moved. Mario can walk on platforms, and platforms sometimes move. Platforms can have a behavior that makes them spin around (don't know if collission data would be altered though). Bowser levels have lots of platforms as well as rainbow ride and whomps fortress.

What I would do, if I didn't have enough objects outside of the castle, is patch the rom with vl-tone's goombas outside of castle ips, change the position / behavior / polygon of the yoshi's and goombas. And then patch the same rom again to make more objects.... Or would that mess things up?

Off topic, I finally made terrain that isn't height map related. It's buggy, but it works. Thank you vl-tone for the idea.

Yeah, he said that I should calcutate triangles only nearest to my player, when I implyingly asked how Nintendo acheived the overlapped terrain effect in super mario 64. I took his words to the next step, and only calculated the z of triangles that the player collided with 2dimentionally, and then made that the z value of the player if he was low enough to the specific triangle(well I didn't do the low enough part yet, but I will in my real game).

Enough off topic posts though. The point is - Vl-tone helped me. And his advice worked.

Stop being a n00b!!! Yes VL_Tone. There is no need to say 'Good Point', as you obviously have no idea what you are talking about!

Perhaps if you read EVERY SINGLE PSOT in this thread, you wouldn't be saying n00bish things for no reason. Right now I could tell you to go away, but I respect the rules not to spam and flame, something that perhaps you should do. DO NOT SPAM! It will only get the moderators angry with you

As far as I know, "n00b" means a newcomer.
How can you say "Stop being a noob" to someone?

Well, it depends where you come from. In the area that I come from, calling someone a n00b is basically calling them a nob, which is a penis. So you know. If you want me to rephrase it

Stop being a stupid person and why didn't you read the rules and FAQ when you first joinded Acmlm's Board?

Better?

For the record, n00b has never been synonymous to n0b/penis, it has _always_ meant noob/noobie/newcomer.
Second, you can stop beeing a noob, by actively searching out information instead of relying on others to inform you.

Now, for the real reason behind this post:

Though I am impressed by the work done by vl-tone, I wish there was some way we could all collaborate on this. I think we should form an open-source group to develop a good editor. Though the work done so far by vl-tone is amazing, I feel the community as a whole would benefit from the opportunities that open-source will bring.
I can program a little in java/c/c++/blah, however after thinking a little I think java would be a good language, primarily because it has reasonably high cross-platform compatability and because of the extensive framework we could build on ( gui, 3d +++ ).
To start things of I've already done a mio0 decoder/encoder(sadly no flexible encoding, perhaps a little later.
If there is interest I'll clean it up a little and throw up the source.

Though this may come off as somewhat deprecating towards vl-tone (i.e "stealing" his project) I truly do belive we would be better off if everyone could contribute, that way the burden would not just be on one man.

However, for now I'm looking forward to the first release, it will be exciting

I agree in some ways. Open source would allow us to modify the engine so that it would work faster and better. But the problem with this is.... Well lets make a list instead.

1. Credits. If everybody starts working on the program, then the credits list would be way to big. Also, people could get mad at others for borrowing their work.

2. Stealing. It is impossible to escape this if the project is open source. People would take the project, change it a little, and then call it theirs though it actually belonged to someone else.

3. Questions. There is no doubt that if the source comes out that people will start asking what code does what. Some may even ask how to do things that are very simple to accomplish(well, for the average hacker that is).
In short, if the source is released, people will want to edit the engine but will find it to hard. So some of these dissapointed people will come to the board and ask lots of silly questions.

I think that open source would not be a bad idea, as long as the source was given only to people who have programing experience (not me of course, I'm to new to hacking), and who we believe are safe/kind hearted people who would never steal other people's work. Thanks for bringing this subject up. I wanted to ask it myself, but you beat me.
