...You set both the original and modified file to the original one. Since a file always is identical to itself, there's no differences to be saved to the IPS.

I've Been Watching These Threads For Some Time Now... ( Although I Couldn't Be Bothered To Register!)

VL, A Question... Do You Think That You May One Day Place A Music Editor Into The Editor (When It Is Finished Of Course...). So Like You Could Put Your Fave Song (AA.mp3 As An Example) Instead Of The Bob-Bomb Battlefield's Music?

Just A Thought To See If It Would Be Possible...

Capitalizing every word = BADBADBAD

Anyway, maybe. Because As Far as I know the N64 sound machine can play more than just a composed USF data (Mario's voice, for example).
But since the music editing is very hard in even NES games, I think that it'll be a quite blast if someone figures out how to edit N64 music.

Sorry, It's Just How I Write...

Ok, I'll break away from my trance in the Underworld just for you, no more capitalising.

*Onto the Topic*
It would be so ace to put 'A Gothic Romance' by Cradle of Filth onto Super Mario!
I hope somebody does it soon!!!!

Someone might make it someday... but not soon. Music is one of the hardest things to hack (If not the hardest)

You're telling me... I've spent the last two hours scouring the net for music hacking software for the NES. I Couldn't find barely anything, the ones that worked were rubbish and didn't actually do anything except list the names of the tracks inside the rom, and the other links took me to places that use phrases such as 'Rom Hacking' and 'Game Boy Advance Roms' to draw you into thinking that they are actual sites dedicated to the phrase, but in actual fact take you to some explicit site. Don't you just hate it when that happens?

Yeah, that's why you just plain don't search for ROMs online, at least not on a search engine. Hell, with every system that comes out, it seems it gets even easier to dump your own, which is the legal way to do it anyway.

Also, assuming the game engine doesn't take up too much CPU power, it should be possible to even go so far as hacking it to play MP3s directly. AFAIK some games such as Perfect Dark do this already. However, a few drawbacks to this idea:
  • Being one of the first N64 games, Mario 64's programming isn't that great, so it probably does take up quite a bit of CPU power.
  • There's probably some patent on the MP3 format that would make this illegal. You could use OGG though.
  • It'd be hard!

If you just want to edit the existing music, I believe it's basically just a MIDI-like format, not too hard to work with. I've never hacked it myself, though, this is just what I heard. (No pun intended. )

BTW, the Gameshark code 80222622 00F8 is fun to use when you have sound on.

UIPS asks me 4 questions:

-Select first file
-Select second file
-Choose saving location
-Choose a name

And I put

-Mario64.z64
-Mario64.z64
-Desktop
-Pacman.ips

What Am I doing wrong?

One of those files should be the original ROM, and the other should be your hack. Just 'first' and 'second' doesn't tell much about the order they should be in though.

Racoon Sam:

I recommend that you use the command-line version of UIPS for OS X, at:
http://www.kyngchaos.com/software/ since I had trouble with the GUI version. But if you still want to try the GUI version, the first file is supposed to be the original unmodifed file, and the second the modified version.

Magic_Vampire_Joe:

As for a music editor, like I said before, it's compressed MIDI. I'm not sure I feel like writing a complete MIDI editor while hundreds already exists.

Yeah, seems like PD and Conker use MP3. No idea how one could extract the MP3'd data from the ROMs, though, so I can only hypothesise they used it to compress samples and voices.

I think Bouche looked at the SM64 music format long ago. All I remember is it's the same format in MK64, so he swapped one song from one game in for another, but didn't change the instruments to fit, resulting in hilarity.

Sorry about that guys, I pressed post reply before I had even written my message.
1) That gameshark code is funny, but the novelty wears off after 5 seconds.
2) Midi and Wav extracting and inserting to roms seems to not be thought of as a thing to be needed and so barely anybody can be bothered...

I'm bored of talking about music editing now and I bet so are you, So i will shut up for a while, possibly get some sleep (i haven't had any for 3 days...)

Magic_Vampire_Joe, somehow, the music editing discussion is now in this thread: http://board.acmlm.org/thread.php?id=4310&page=1

I started to work again on the editor, I'm still at basic stages of rewriting, but this is because many important structure design decisions had to be taken.

Things about the basic structure of the format are mostly finalized now. I decided that I'll add some jump points in the level scripts to be able to add objects after the script instead of inserting them. The new version can now load and decode all level scripts in a fraction of a second.

I will release version 1.5 of the ROM extender soon. It will repoint the uncompressed level script segments too, and add more space between segments. The text editor will still work on both extended formats, but be aware that your other patches may not work with the new format. I'll try to never do that again Version 1.5 will be the "final" version of the extended ROM format.

When extending texture data, VL-Tone, you won't need to have space between chunks of data. The images will never change dimensions; I guarantee it. Once 32×32, always 32×32. You can squish all of the texture files reasonably close to each other and thusly have ample space between other kinds of resources.

I know that if the original data is edited it won't change size when uncompressed. There are only a few texture-only MIO0, the rest is a combination of both inside the same file. There's plenty of empty space at the end of the ROM anyway. Even for texture-only MIO0's I'd like to leave some space... what if an advanced hacker wants to add a texture?

Replacing isn't adding, though. What if you used them all and want to add more? SMW hackers often have the same basic problem with running out of Map16 tiles.
