Only problems I see are the glitched bullets, sky water (flood?), oddly-shaped fire and dark blue scorebar. The rest looks great, and the smaller objects/characters give the illusion of higher resolution.

Ohhhh I see now, somebody else had commented about water in the sky.
I just got it. It's not water, it's smoke!

It's a level in a polluted industrial city. Might have to fix it, if 2 people saw water instead of smoke, it's not a coincidence.

BTW, what are those lines in the top of the screenshots? I captured it with ZSNES

Question: what are those lines in the top of the screenshots?
Answer: I captured it with ZSNES

Congratulations on answering your own question.

ZSNES has trouble with PNGs. If you take BMP screenshots and convert them, they should come out clean.

I also saw water as opposed to seeing smoke. You need to round it out. And ZSNES bugs out on BMPs too, not just PNGs. And although I'm only partial to the Japanese-like characters, those screenshots are very good. Especially the tank. I look forward to seeing more screenshots in the future.

i dont see water at all.... all i see are black-grey clouds... unless you guys think the sky below the clouds is water ... in that case ... ur all blind

Great hack so far. ... So, story line is some silly young girl goes out into polluted towns and army sites? ...Explain exactly WHY she's risking her life. Is she psychic? Is the millitary after her alone? Is she retarted?

All the 'intro' levels are very easy, except for one where the girl's village is destroyed by tanks. That is a traumatic event that defines her future

The story is about a Chiaki, a girl who lives in a fishermen's village near the border with a rival country. War breaks out and her village is razed by bombers, armor and troops. She runs in panic and miraculously escapes, but is the only survivor.

Her village is destroyed, her family and friends are dead, so with nowhere to go she follows the road to the nearest town, where she wanders through the frozen streets until she collapses. Somebody takes her to a hospital, and when she recovers is taken to a orphanage.

But the children, many of whom lost relatives in the war, attack her because she has dark hair (a characteristic feature of the enemy country), so once again she's in danger.

She manages to escape, and is adopted by an old man who hopes to use her to impress women. He takes her to his home in the mountains. Years later, with time and hard work he teaches her discipline, and trains her in the Way of the Falling Leaf, a devastating martial art.

Then, she's contacted by the Royal Armed Forces, who see her as the perfect recruit for their special operations program. Her foreign looks would let her be unnoticed behind enemy lines, and her deadly skills would be essential for the war effort.

And so, Chiaki keeps looking for a meaning for her survival, to finally make a choice between forgetting and walking away, or coming back to take the most bitter revenge...

That's how the story begins.

I'm bumping this for the sole purpose that I want to know if there's been any progress on the hack. It looks incredibly interesting, and a revival seems in order, in my opinion. jp, if there's anything more you want to share with us about your hack, please post it!

now THIS is what I'm talking about.

This is great. Thank you for being original! It's stuff like this that makes SMW Hacking worth while...

Yeah there's a lot of news, I've been working hard everyday of the week in this hack. I completed another level, and almost finished another one. Both of them have their own ExGFX and sprites, so progress is slow -- but steady.

But the big news are a couple of features that, as far as I know, haven't been implemented in other hacks, or at least not so extensively. Some are subtle changes like a small hack that allows the use of the whole palette 8 for Mario in custom palettes (SMW normally only allows 5), and some are... more noticeable

This was never meant to be a sophisticated hack, but I've been learning a little about ASM and using the debugger, so it may turn out interesting.

Well, I wasn't going to release any, but here are a couple of new (and not revealing at all ) screenshots:

Falling leaves

A pond in the mountain level

Ignore the fact that Chiaki is grown up, she shouldn't in the first world.

I must apologize because I'm not really showing much but I think it will be more enjoyable this way, or there wouldn't be any surprises.

Holy shit!

That second screenshot looks fucking awesome.

Just wondering, so far you've done city and forest. Have you got any other themes for levels in mind?

Yes, it depends on the story really, I just draw what I need for every level. But it's a sure thing that there will be a large variety of levels, including some bigger cities.

Hm, that girl in your layout is the one in the hack, isn't she?

BTW, nice graphics, but it looks like she forgot her pants. The legs should come down to at least the knee, and it doesn't look like that's the case.

Unless she's just wearing shorts or something.
