I really like the look of this hack...I like the realistic settings such as the city with trees, cars, and buildings, it's a really cool look. The characters look cute too. All-in-all the graphics blend together nicely to make a neat cartoon appearance. Nice job, but the ultimate judgement will come after we play your levels .

I more or less agree with what everyone else has been saying. Your custom graphics work is indeed very well done. Don't take that as a sign you should stop refining your work, however. I used to get compliments on my custom graphics work a couple years ago, but comparing my old stuff to my new stuff almost makes me puke it's so bad.

I really look forward to trying this hack when I can, good job.

Thanks for the compliments, they give me the motivation I need to continue.

I feel tempted to make an ips, but that would reveal a couple of little surprises, and it will be more enjoyable if they are presented at the right time.

This hack will not be locked, so people can use it as a base for their own work.

Do you plan to work some more on the graphics you already showed... Like for example the trees ?
I think they need work, unless you wanted to make them look like 2D/cardboard trees. (No sarcasm meant)

The graphics are certainly nice and original for a hack, however you could use more colors, I think... At the moment, this looks better than a NES game but worse (or less colorful) than your usual SNES game... In other words, it kinda looks like a Mega Drive game, more or less.

I don't mean to sound like an asshole, and I know you're far from finished... I was just wondering how much you were planning to keep on ironing your graphics.

I agree with your point, but I'm not planning to improve on the graphics, for a simple reason: there are too little Map16 pages available. If I start using them up with complex graphics, I'll soon run out of them.

You're also right in that I'm using few colors. That's because my object palettes are meant to be exchangeable with each other. Each has 3 shades of a main color, 3 of a secondary color, 3 skin tones, 3 or 4 greys, etc. That has its pros and cons, but basically it allows me to have 6 sets of building blocks in different colors (which also take up 6 Map16 pages).

And I also like the idea of having some room for improvement for a sequel.

Neat!!

Those screen shots remind me of those old B games that never made it here, or were not played much, like some of the platformers on the TG16 and so on.

I actually like the style of the trees, of course if it were me i would not change anything graphicaly, that you have so far.

Like every one else, i can not wait to play this.

Actually, seeing your hack makes me want to get back into the hacking game.

I actually have a few good hacks i made, but people here had gotten to where they complain so much about the most silly of things in a hack, that i got to where i did not want to work on hacking anymore.

You have inspired me, JP.
Now i may get back to hacking Mario world again.

Thanks mikepjr! That's one of the nicest compliments I've received!

The people in this board are demanding, but they appreciate it when you put a lot of effort in your work. Coming here is like a breath of fresh air, compared with the envy and indifference I have to deal with in the comics community of my city.

I'm glad I could give you a boost of motivation, and I'm looking forward to see your new hacks!

I was actually making a hack kinda like this a long time ago. Set in a post-apocalyptic world. I think I might have to get back into it. I always liked how it was coming out.

With your hack, I'd improve some of the graphics. The trees have no dimension. And I do not mean colors. Think with the light hitting it. It will not be darker all around the leaves. Plus I'd fix the army guy's bullet? I cannot tell what exactly it is supposed to be. Or is that just a glitch.

Those are the only big problems that I see at the time.

Yes, the bullet was a glitch, it's fixed now.

Fixing the trees is a big problem, making them realistic would take considerable Map16 space that I'd rather use for other objects.

I think they look 'passable' with the cartoony look of the rest of the graphics, and in gameplay they work fine.

But yes, it's one of the first things to improve if I ever make a sequel, or maybe if when I finish the hack I have enough Map16 space left, I could fix it.

In regards to Map16, make sure you're using Page 2 to it's fullest advantage. The Map16 tiles it uses change with what tileset you are on (based on the FG/BG Index values, which can be changed through the Level menu). Which means you have, in effect, 14 extra pages! The only limitation is, of course, that though the graphics will change with each tileset, the gameplay property (aka tile number) will remain the same. Not a problem if you're careful.

Let me know if I didn't explain something well.

It's a great tip, I was aware of it (I discovered it when I found my page 2 was not available in other levels ^^;;

But the trees I made are climbable, so I need to change the gameplay settings as well.

I'm not really that tight on space yet, but I'm trying to make every tile count because I don't want to run into that problem later.

Oh trust me, I know the feeling. For JAMH, I've used up a metric ton of Map16 so far, and I've only really completed one world so far. The trees may not have settings that you plan to reuse a lot, but I'm certain you have plenty (or at least some ) blocks set to solid or walk through that you could maybe cram together. It's annoying as crap to rearrange Map16 after you've already built levels with the blocks (again, I know the feeling), but it's worth the effort if you find yourself running out of room.
