Looky what I did!

This is SMB. That is free space in the hex editor. Notice that the "54"s in the hex editor resemble the solid-blue squares in the game. Wonder what you will about this project, but I won't answer many questions. Just know you're going to see SMB like you've never seen it before...

Oh yeah, the "green" is the sky, blue is solid blocks, Im just using extremely simple gfx for now until I get this polished.

Those who know SMB know the "no more than 3 different objects on X-line per level" page rule and knowthat normally, this stucture shown here is impossible to create.

Whatever it is, I can't wait. That question about scrolling: It wouldn't happen to have anything to do with this, would it :3

Dude... I didn't know about that rule, but I did know that those structures were still impossible in the original. Revolutionizing level editing in Mario 1?

Seriously looking forward to what you pull off with this. That opens up a LOT of freedom.

Well, he did it in a rather simple way.

Look at 0x001d00 and below in the RAM editor. Notice how it's similar to Dahkdaiz way? Where the bytes who are 54 is ground, 00 is sky and 51 is bricks?

But apparently, he changed the way how the game loads the levels. So it loads it directly into the RAM like it is in the ROM, instead of using some wierd format. So nice job.

Still it's beyond me why anyone else hadn't done it before. Maybe we just don't have enough people ASM hacking on the NES...

(Edit: Might mention... for a few seconds I thought the screenshot was from the inbuilt RAM editor... not ROM. XD)

(Edit2: Also... that RAM area only show objects you can interact with. And if you edit anything, it won't show up graphically but Mario will still be able to hit it.)

This reminds me of Crystal Mines, which read data from the ROM and put it into RAM as-is (instead of using objects)

Whic, of course, allows for completely unlimited level design, but takes up a lot of space, especially in a game like this.

I smell a two-way scrolling SMB...

no no, it's not vertical or backwards scrolling, that's too unlike SMB. I've just restarted a project that everyone on the planet has bugged me to pick back upon, once I post another screenshot, many will understand hehe

I was working on something vague of this (object, sprite, and graphics expansion). But me thinks you'll do something A LOT better than what I had up my sleeve!

I was referring to "shit" as in the first two screens. Shit of that level.

Best I managed was to remove small Mario while giving big Mario two hit points.

...and I reversed the life counter. No game over until ~127.

Ohhhh I see, yeah I overhauled the TSA engine, the level loading and level storing engines. It's pretty sweet and opens up a million doors for me. Only thing I need to do now is overhaul the sprite format and Im set. What's really great about this method is that I could very well modify a level on the fly. So lets say you collect so many coins, I could generate a harder path ahead or a shortcut, whatever I wanna do, though I can't modify a level that you actually see, only areas ahead in the level.
