| I watched two movies last night, first I watch The Island, it was sorta a cross between The Giver, Total Recall and the Matrix. Really, there was nothing original about it, every concept or scene reminded me of another movie or story. There was also no character development at all. There were some decent action scenes though, although a few were a little too silly for me, almost slapstick at times. It wasn't all bad though, it did have some funny parts (most intentional). Also when they showed "The Future", I was rememinded of a line said by Tom Servo during Time Chasers: "So, 50 years from now, it will be three years from now?", really, the only difference was that the L trains were higher. I'd give it 3.5 out of 10 stars.
Next, I watched The Shawshank Redemption, which was about a man keeping hope while serving a life sentence in a rough prison. It was also considerly better than The Island. I'd give it an 8 of 10 stars. Any one else see either of these two movies? What did you think of them? Which did you think was better? (edited by emcee on 12-18-05 07:28 PM) |

| The Shawshank Redemption is one of the best movies I've seen, period.
The Island on the other hand was typical Michael Bay bullshit. It never ceases to amaze me how Michael Bay can take an interesting concept and turn it into.... well.. you saw it, so you know..  |

| This is an unfair matchup.
To compare The Shawshank Redemption with The Island is like comparing The Shinning with SpyKids 3D To answer you question. The Shawshank Redemption is a good movie while The Island is a typical movie from Hollywood. Interesting concept that was turned to crap. I have seen worst but it isn't worth a second watch unless Scarlett Johansson gets naked. |

| I just read that The Green Mile was written and directed by the same guy that wrote and directed The Shawshank Redemption. That kind of surprised me. I didn't like The Green Mile at all, I actually think The Island was better. Maybe it was the source material, The Green Mile was based on a full novel by Stephen King, while The Shawshank Redemption was just a short story (also by Stephen King), so it was more Darabont's work, and less Stephen King. Don't get me wrong King writes great horror, but his pure drama leaves a little to be desired. (edited by emcee on 12-20-05 11:29 PM) |

| None of the characters in The Green Mile had any real depth. All the guards were good except one, and all the inmates were good except one. And the good guards never did anything bad, and the bad guard never did anything good. The good inmates never did anything bad (even though most of them must of done something bad to get in there), and the bad inmate never did anything good. The whole healing power business was completely out of place. Also, John Coffey was just another Lennie from Of Mice and Men.
The movie seem to go to great lengths to squeeze emotions out the viewer. They made sure to show no faults in the prisoners, just so you would feel bad when they're executed. Then they make sure the bad guys have no redeeming qualities just to make sure you're happy to see them killed (or worse). It all just annoyed me, at least The Island what somewhat entertaining. |

Shawshank is my all time favorite movie, in any genre, and people I know from all over the world agree. Morgan Freeman is awesome (and Tim Robbins thoroughly redeems himself for his terrible pitching antics in 'Bull Durham' ^^ .
If you haven't seen this, see it. It will stay with you for the rest of your days. |

| Anyone who loves The Shawshank Redemption ought to see Mississippi Burning. Not that the stories are in any way the same, but both have the same kinda mood and pacing. Mississippi Burning deals with racism in the south during the 1960s, and it's really well done, and stars Gene Hackman and Willem Dafoe as FBI agents (who are constantly butting heads, what with their different methods and ideas) investigating the disappearance of three civil rights activists.
It's actually about a true story, but how accurate the movie is, I don't know. |
