Lately I think politics are getting mixed up with religious (namely Christian) beliefs. Sounds like political matters here are headed for the worst. Believing in destiny not for one person but this nation is a scary thought. I've seen some examples of this on the news and outside of my house. If this keeps up, America may just as well die off like the Roman Empire did.

Our death will be much more violent then the Roman's death if we do die.

Chances are another Civil War will happen before we get attack directly by another force, not including terrorist, before we have our "fall" though.

Yes, belief is mixed up with polotics, and we are following some of the same trends as the Roman's did.

We started off with a high tolerence for all religions, I believe so anyways, and now we're getting closer and closer to being all Christian, because honestly, when is the last time you heard of a Buddhist leader in America?

I deal with it though, although the stupidity is getting kind of annoying in school lately. In debate, for instance, there was an argument from the majority of the class that, for lack of better words, "evolution is teh stoopid".

Yeah, me and one other person tried to point out that they're thinking of something else and that they have no clue what they're talking about, although a few people decided to stay out of it.

This is kind of a mini-version of current polotics.

I think you're actually getting further and further away from being all Christian.

This is very true. Even as the nation as a whole moves farther right (although, I think were on a verge of change), the vast majority of Americans are still not Fundamentalist Christians, like those who seem to be trying to take control of the government. And those that are trying to take control are they themselves moving farther away from true Christianity, as they seem to have forgot basic Christian principles such as "Judge not, that ye be not judged", and "Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar's, and unto God the things which be God's". The truth is, combining Church and State only serves to currupt them both.

Everything dies. Just like the Byzantine and Ottoman Empire's did, so will America, in the sense of it's global superiority.

The Ottoman empire didn't really just completely go kerplunk in a HOLY-SHIT-ASTEROID-IMPACT fashion like Rome, or anything. The Ottoman empire just went the way of British, German and Belgian empires.

am I actually getting the idea from some of you that you think the US is getting worse because of Christians?

do you forget that when the US was founded it was primarily christian and has remained that way since that time?

sure, maybe not all of them are "right wing fundamentalist christians" but the largest portion of people are christian

the idea that Christianity is somehow going to be the downfall is far from the truth. In fact I feel it is the opposite. The rejection of Christianity's morals and values are what is ruining the US.

Society is moving away from one centered on a common belief system (in this case, christianity) and is instread moving into a mass of individualism.

Seriously folks, gone are the times of the Scarlet letter, and entire town church meetings.

People often see Freedom as a do what ever you want proposition.

For example, Career women often want a career AND a family. Most who are successful (and this is always a case by case basis) have found that it means taking time away from their career for a year or 2 (or 3) to take care of a child, then resuming work. Or having a spouse/sig. other perform such a duty.

When parents dont do this, we get results like columbine. What kind of friggin parent are you not to notice your kid smashing COKE bottles in the garage?

have YOU ever tried to BREAK A COKE BOTTLE? Those things are rugged.

Sure, those parents were free to shoose not to nurture and care for their children, to throw themselves into a selfish workaholic lifestyle that turned their children into latch-key kids and homicidal/suicidal threats to society.

When i was a kid, my parents knew where I was and were i had been. I also got a spanking whenever i deserved one.

From what I've heard, 35% of today's adults are truly Bible believing, and at the current rate my generation's amount will be 4%, making me quite the minority. With politics, you have to start somewhere, and beliefs that you've grown up with and hope to fufill are a great place, if you know what you're doing. The watering down of truth and values that are only unique to America have done some damage, but much of deterioration is coming from many individuals trying to be .. individuals. Take a random sample from today's 14-17 year olds (our "future") and there will be no common opinion on what boundries should be set for which things. If they had stayed true to a code or just maybe an entire religion, there would be much more agreement even in the most opposite battles. If you asked them very general questions of great contrast like many people ask today, it would create a false sense of togetherness and be hopelessly unaccurate. America has welcomed everyone since it opened its doors, the premise was to have Biblical rooted law but let people worship freely as they pleased. For whatever reason, this isn't good enough for many people today, which suggests that America's people will both raise their government and destroy it.

It sounds like a return of the manifest destiny ideal from the late 1800s. We do a thing because we CAN do a thing, and because we CAN do a thing, its our inherant right and ability, so we should not feel guilty about it.

What a crock of shit.

wait. are you claiming that one person's post was manifest destiny or the subject of fundamentalists are using manifest destiny.

anyway, although I'm not a fundamentalist and I do believe that there needs to be a healthy seperation of church and state, of the abstract and the logical, I am still dismayed at the level of antagonism for the other, on both sides. I think the main reason for this is that neither side respects the other side's need to exist. We need our philosophy just as much as we need our science. As long as we don't have extremes of either things should be A-OK.

The US was primarily Christian but the philosophies and ideals that made it great were inherently unChristian.

What is ruining the US is the lack of morals and values, in general, and objective intelligent morals and values in specific.

If you want to know more... then feel free to read The Virtue of Selfishness by Ayn Rand/Nathaniel Branden. She is a philosopher and advocate of capitalism and individual rights.
