Clearly, there is the question implied if art is something that is individually judged, widely accepted, universal, or otherwise. And not to mention, if there are things that can be called art, are there things that cannot be called art? What characteristics does a work of art carry, that separates "art" and "not art"?

Art is when a reasonable design is put on a surface and shown to others.

What about music, dance and performance art?

If you have to ask "is it art?" that means it is. Art is basically whatever someone can get away with.

I wasn't thinking of those types of art but now that I am...

If someone tries their hardest to make a design on a surface then that is art. If someone tries as hard as they can to dance then that is art.

Basically art is a anything that is done to a persons best ability.

I dont think art has to be anything made by people (though it usually is). There is art in nature to, like in the natural forms of plants, animals and man, or a particularly scenic landscape. To me art is anything which can move a person. It does'nt have to be uplifting either, it can be downright jarring or nonsensical and still be art.

Marijuana can move a person, but it's not necessarily art. Cars move people and they're usually not art.

I was kidding. But really, I think that's a bit too broad of a definition.

I agree on that. I mean, art is hard to pindown. A lot of people say is that if it conveys a message or creates an emotion. Some forms of art distinctly try to eschew such ideas, namely...pomo.

Let me put it this way. If one wanted to explain to someone who didn't know the word "art" what art was, how would one go about doing so?

Point at something that is generally considered "art" and say "art".

Or point at "Fountain" by DuChamp and say "no". I'm usually cool with him, but foundart really irritates me. Particularly the point behind that piece. He just did it to anger an art commission. What a doucebag.

Art, a creation from a human usually in a recreational form.
That's what I call it.

I would say a general term for art is just anything that can be created: If you can create something, there is an art to doing something.

I actually visited an art musuem today, for the first time ever. which contained everything from elaborate paintings of beatiful ocean waves to naked women to gigantic sculptures to masks, to abstract paintings, boxes poking out of a wall, a yellow triangle on a wall, to broken glass. To a fucking photoshop of a picture. Most of which I felt could be drawn better by half the people I knew, but for whatever reason, they're worth millions.

I personally believe that something is considered art if a person other than the person who created it considers it art, but in reality, everything is art.

But that doesn't really answer the question, really. If you point to everything, and call it art, what does that tell about art?

That it is difficult to define and basically limited only by the imagination of artists.

It's not like all art has to be automatically respected.

I never said it did; but saying everything is art doesn't define art very precisely.
