It's been a while since I last posted, but I really need some help. I am in my school's graphic arts unit, and I know more about computers than anyone else here (which isn't a whole lot, so we need some big help here). Anyway, one of my class's three computers is very important to the school in that we make all the newsletters, order forms and announcements on it, and all taken pictures that may be involved in the yearbook are managed on it. Last Friday (2/9/07), the computer was working fine. Over the weekend, my teacher and her friend did some work on Saturday that probably wasn't on the computer, and on Sunday, my teacher had her husband come over to do some work. He allegedly installed "System Mechanic 6" on all of the computers in the room, but I only found a shortcut for it on one computer, which wasn't the affected one.

When I got back on Monday and proceeded to open some folders to manage recent photos, I couldn't open Windows Explorer. I could not open My Computer, My Documents, any other folder, Control Panel, or even Internet Explorer (I am posting from a different computer). Now this is the old, old Windows 2000 Professional edition that can't even open or save anything but BMP's with MSPaint. Right now, our school is on a low budget, so buying a new OS is out of the question.

I would like, if possible, some ideas about what might be wrong, or pointers about how to solve the problem. I am not completely familiar with such terms as "BIOS" or anything, so I might need it to be dumbed down a little. Responses would be greatly appreciated. A few things I've tried:

-Google my problem, but I think my case was unique, because I couldn't find an answer.
-Opening explorer with task manager's "run" command, but it just shuts off the start bar, system tray, and shortcuts, then turns them on again and switches off my active desktop.
-Using an "open..." dialog for Notepad to browse the computer then copy explorer.exe in the C:/WINNT folder to a floppy, and compare it with the explorer.exe on another computer; they are the same.
-Trying to open other programs to see if it affected many things, but anything except Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer work fine. (I can run StepMania and Microsoft Office Publisher fine)

Thank you for your help, if you do so, because it's really important that we get the computer running properly again!

Sounds like an explorer core component is damaged.
If you still have the Windows 2000 CDs, go to Start -> Run (let's hope that works) and type in sfc /scannow. Insert the CD when requested.

edit: layout fix

"Run" works, and I can access and use Command Prompt from it (however it doesn't seem to do much), but the person who got all the computers running here doesn't work here, and he probably has the CD's for the computers. Other than that, there are no Windows 2000 Professional CD's here.

Thank you, I'll leave him a note to try that and/or leave the CD here since he comes here sometimes.
