Yes, this question must be asked at least a few times but I recently got a computer well i'm renting it from Rent A Center anyhow it's an HP quite nice. It has a little CD Writer/DVD writer combo drive. I went to Rite Aid purchased a 15 pack of Fujifilm DVD-R hoping it'd work but the 2 burning softwares I used both of them said my drive was DVD+RW all I really want to do is burn, then watch on my DVD players so can someone enlightend me on the difference and how well +RW will work and does it have to be rewritable discs at that? i'm hoping not.
Thanks for helping! (edited by interdpth on 12-12-05 02:23 PM) |

First of all, return those DVD-R discs because they are useless to you with a drive the burns in the + format.
Second, a DVD+RW means it is a drive that can burn on to DVD+R and DVD+RW discs. Third, not all DVD players may be able to read +RW. However, because you have DVD+R burning capability, then you should be okay. |

As far as I know, a combo drive usually is capable of burning CDs but only able to read DVDs
If possible, you could try to replace the machine (if it is not that much more expensive) if you need DVDs, but other than that there is no way getting a combo drive making work burning DVDs. |

Surlent: The programs I was going to use to burn said my combo drive was also a DVD+RW
Neo: Would any DVD player that can play -R be able to play +R? |

Well, most DVD players out on the market now can play both -R and +R DVD's. But if you only have a drive/recorder that can burn one specific type... not good. (My dad wants to buy a DVD recorder but all the ones on sale are -R, and we have a ton of +R DVD's, so yeah.)

don't forget to check the companies website for a compatibility list. they usually have one. some don't, those you have to call/e-mail support.like my dads samsung DVD burner can burn maxell -Rs, but not maxell +R/RWs.

The answer to interdpth's answer is a resounding "NO". +R discs are well known for having lower compatibility with various players then -R ones. In fact, +R is incompatible with about 10% of drives. The way -R and +R discs write and play in a drive are totally different.Originally posted by interdpth-R and +R are just two ways to burn (i.e. put data onto a DVD disc). Thus, yeah things will be okay--+R and -R should both be able to be read -R discs are written at constant linear velocity, meaning the disc rotates at different speeds depending on the track, fastest on tracks on the outer part of the disc. This is the prefered format for DVD video. +R discs are written at constant angular velocity (though some drive/software combos let you do it at CLV, you aren't supposed to), anyway, with constant angular velocity, the disc spins at a constant angular rate regardless of position. This format is technically superior to -R but far fewer players support it. |
