Few new screens of my hack, formerly known as SMW: Return to the Mushroom Kingdom.

A few are in early progress, and are quite empty, but whatever; I just wanted to throw out what I have. For the older screens, look here.

I haven't worked on this in months, but hopefully these won't be the last screens I ever post of it.

Comments? Suggestions?

Hey dude here are some of my suggestions:

1) Nice one, but the FG SMAS ExGFX is a little bland.
2) W00t!
3) Add some invisible blocks so that Mario can't get out of the water(I think you have )
4) Nothing to say here but it is good.
5) I like YI ghosts better And the stair looks weird
6) Where do you get the BG from? That's very nice isn't it?
7) I noticed that the corner of the ledge edge doesn't fit with the water. Please fill in the gap between the corner and the water.
8) A nice throwback to the SMB1 style, but can you delete the BG tiles above the upper blocks?
9) Rarely used YI FG really catches my eyes. 0_0
10) Better change the firebar to the original SMB1 style GFX. And change the lava GFX a little.
11) Nice.
12) Boring level name, change it to a more creative one. The SMB3 style GFX is pretty good.
13) The BG sky gradient has a bad pallete. And the goomba's feet have the wrong colour.
14) Nice.
15) Will people still accept the original SMW GFX?
16) I hope the rotodisc is a real custom sprite.
17) Nice.
18) W00t! Is the Bowser a real custom sprite?
19) Nothing to say.
20) & 21) FG is good, and please modify the BG pallete so it looks like that it is cloudy.
22) Nice.
23) Does Bowser uses light bulb in his castle?
24) Same as 10).
25) The Sand GFX is poor.
26) Hey, a nice looking SMB2 GFX!

Overall remark: Nice work, but too much ripped GFX. More work needed.

nope. i know you hate pac's other hacks for having zero originality, but i haven't seen the levels shown in these screenshots in any other hack - or game for that matter. you might want to back up your opinion because right now it seems like you just have a grudge.

but peter, i hate that you use the all stars smb1 & lost levels mario graphics and smb3(?) koopa sprites.

the way i see it, if a sprite/the character looks identical to its counterpart in all stars (or any other game) it should act the exact same way. and since the game is still using the super mario world engine that's really not possible and it feels confusing to play. that's the only critique i have of your shots.

however they do look really pretty and perfectly ripped.

also, how did you find that bottom row of the mario bros 1 underground background in shot 8? i dont think i've seen that before, even in the europe rom

I don't normally post in the SMW forum (mainly because I'm not too too crazy about SNES hacks generally) but I actually am kind of looking forward to this. I mean, a lot of people like to go with the SMAS art style in their SMW hacks, and it normally a commonly unoriginal thing to do, but I really think this is different. I think that Pac is kind of re-inventing the wheel in a good way. I mean I think there's a huge difference between doing what everone else does, and doing it better than everyone else.

The screen shots are very nice (SS 6 is nice but kind of boring). I love when hacks include many different types of ExGFX (although I do have to agree with 3.14159265358979323846 with the opinion that the stairs in the ghost house look a bit weird). By the looks of it, this hack will be as much fun to play as the ones you made in the past.

I really don't care what anyone says, I'm actualy VERY impressed by this hack :3 I personally think that you used the graphics WELL, it doesn't matter if SMAS graphics are over-used because as long as you use them well, they still look good (I much rather perfer something that is over-used but looks right than something brand new but completely out of place and clashing with everything else)

The levels look fun and interesting, which is what I've always loved about Mario games. I cannot wait for this :3

Ignore the Keeper of the X, hater that he is.

I happen to like all of the screenshots. I will be looking forward to this hack when it is released. You managed to awaken my sense of nostalgia with this.

I really like the second screenshot. Don't bother asking why, I just do.

There are many rips in this hack, true. But one thing irks me:

People say level design counts more than graphics, yet they complain when SMAS graphics are used.

I mean, does it really make a difference if the levels play well...? :/

Yeah I didn't criticize pac for using it, but to expect him not to spread it all over his hack.

Pi, thanks for taking the time to write all that. There will be a wide variety of different graphics and backgrounds throughout the whole hack; mostly, but not only SMAS.

Raccoon Sam... I don't like releasing demos, but this is pretty close to completion anyway. Heh, I've been working on this since October '05 now.

Xk, <3

wtfweb, thank you for the comments. To be honest, though, I'm happy mixing graphics from different SMAS games. I get the palettes right for them, so I'm not worried about any clashing.

That means a lot to me, Dr. Mario, thanks.

Higsby, yes, I realise that level is empty... I didn't pout anything in it after ripping that awesome background, which I got from Ghettoyouth, by the way.

Yoro, that's good to hear, thank you.

Trans, I'll fix the water, m'kay?

Koitenshin, thanks for that.

Bloodstar, I'm trying to make levels as fun as possible; that's the most important thing.

Again, thanks for the great comments and feedback. Hopefully I'll regian motivation to work on this in the coming months, and eventually release it when it's packed full of everything that can be done with a SMW hack.

Don't dodge the bullet. This is like saying you shouldn't criticize art unless you can draw a Mona Lisa.

Common sense says that SMAS graphics are too fucking overused, and there's nothing in these screenshots that make me go "Woah." It's just the same shit you see in every single other hack on the planet now.

SMAS graphics are overused because they are good. I'd say they are a google times better than SMW's graphics. Good hack, Pac. Kudos to you.

I don't mean to troll, but I'm with Xk on this one.
It could be screens I saw 2 weeks ago in another thread and I wouldn't even be able to tell.

As for using SMAS graphics... It just sucks that below 1% of the people here are able to make decent sprites from scratch.

So what if they don't make sprites from scratch. The SMAS graphics are for all intents and purposes all recolors of their NES graphics, yet you don't see people saying WHY DIDNT THE ARTIST CREATE ORIGINAL SPRITES FROM SCRATCH. For that matter, I've seen SO many SMB1 hacks that use SMB3 graphics, and I almost never hear the volume of complaints of graphic over-use as I do here. Keep in mind they are the same graphics as these, only 8-bit. It just comes off as a little hypocritical when I look at it like that and honestly, if people can be all WOW THTS AMAZNG to an NES hack with good level design and SMB3 graphics, why can't they do they same in these cases? Its just...I don't get it ._.; what's the difference, really.

And saying that there's more SMW hacks than SMB hacks thus making it more common isn't really a good excuse, I'll just say now...

Maybe because Nintendo didn't use those graphics in 5798 games, so it was totally okay... and also because they were *remaking* those games, not making new ones ?

Also, the fact I don't "bitch" in other topics does in no way mean I like the fact others reuse SMAS gfx, let alone that I'm fond of their work.
