Seeing as there are some people who are very violently anti - any company that implements DRM, I thought I would share with you guys a recent article written by Steve Jobs, the CEO of Apple Computers.
Steve Jobs: Thoughts on Music I found it to be an interesting read, but it raises a bit of a question for me at the end -- HOW do we as consumers persuade the Music Industry to allow non-DRM files to be sold on music stores such as the iTMS? Surely that would work out better for everyone? |

The only solution is to abolish the iTunes Music Store. Why in blue hell should people be making MONEY off downloading legally when downloading illegally is what is causing them to lose money?
Yes, the idea of DRM kits in music downloaded from these online stores is ok, but it's like everyone just went on a spree of download-o-mania. These big companies are thinking "Hey, maybe kids just don't want to go buy these albums on CD, they want them on their PC. It's just the principle of the thing, how could our bread and butter idea's which fueled us with millions of dollars for so long have been so stupid?" Gah...There's really no way to say DRM is right and wrong. It protects the companies, yet it is also bullshit in the sense that it hides information like a trojan. Nobody wants to pay for music anymore. How could they be so irresponsible for their actions... |

It's a self-serving argument from Apple's perspective, since most online sales resulting from abolishing DRM would be through their Itunes store, but it's also a correct argument.
He's right, DRM hasn't worked since most music is copyable anyway (from CDs) and it's mostly the big dinosaur record companies keeping DRM in place. I'm sure Apple resents the bad press, it runs counter to the pseudo-hippie image they're trying to maintain. DRM-free sales would most likely increase total sales, increase customer satisfaction, and reduce the overhead of trying to implement DRM effectively. |

iTunes Music Store makes it's money by selling people iPod specific format tunes for download. People download music for free. Why would they promote this practice when they're trying to abolish it? | |||

Originally posted by Rom Manic The iTunes Music Store was also one of the first ways to legally download your music. A lot of people want to do that -- despite there being free illegal downloads available, the iTMS sells a lot of songs, not necessarily all for iPod only. Why would removing DRM change that? |

Yea, I saw that one last night and found this today.
The short answer to Taryn's question is it wouldn't. Why would Apple continue on its course of keeping something that isn't even in existence in 90% of the music that people download to their iPods or music players anyways? Making it more open would actually BENEFIT them because they would have a wider selection of players to share their songs with than just their iPods exclusively. I think he'd be really bright to do away with it if it's possible. People will still buy legal music that can be downloaded and doing it this way will just expand their horizons that much more. They'll get more business and they'll get more money. Does that completely solve the 'illegal music' problem? Course not. I doubt that will ever be fixed completely because, as Steve said, there's really no way that it will be fixed with the effect of smart people with a lot of time on their hands existing in the world (sorta like a majority of people who frequent this forum ). |

Originally posted by Tarale According to that article, it does and will not license the DRM software to anyone else. And I realize it's legal from iTunes. I'm just saying, it promotes a bad practice, the very one they are against by providing a legal music download source. It's a great business opportunity, but doesn't Apple make enough money? |

Originally posted by Rom Manic I'm not sure that money is necessarily the reason behind the iTunes Music Store existing. I think they were trying to prove that online music distribution was viable. Which I would have to say, they have certainly done. Course, to even get it started they had to work with the record companies and implement the DRM. I would actually be surprised if Apple make a huge amount of money through the iTunes Music Store. I would guess that a lot of that money goes to the record labels, and gets put into maintaining the Store and the DRM they have to have. |
