OK I was wondering what is like the oldest you can be, going out with a younger person.

Like for example I'm 18, a freshman in college, and say a girl 16 going on 17, a junior in high school. Is that acceptable, or too much of a stretch? I'm not actually in a relationship, I was just curious.

As long as you're both responsible people, going out with eachother for the right reasons, there's no reason age should matter at all.

At least as long as both parties are over the local age of consent.

Its a weird subject, when you get older it just becomes more and more okay.

I'm 19, I'm not sure about a 16 year old ... but, going on 17 would probably be fine.

That situation would be fine, in my opinion.

Yeah, I agree that maturity and responsibility probably are more important than age. Like 15 with a 19 would be weird, but if the 15 year old was really mature and what have you, it wouldn't be as bad? I dunno.

Again, I'm just saying, what if.

The rule of thumb is "half the older person's age, plus 7" for the younger person. So if you're 18, you can date someone 16 (18/2 + 7) without it being weird but not 15.

Personally I think it's weird to cross the High School divide too, as with the "still lives at home" line. But that's just me and being weirded out by people my age who still live at home.

I hear that, the high school thing, but if I ever did anything, it'd be over the summer.

I think I was pretty much just ASKING to be in a relationship doomed to fail...

I say adult plus minor with a 3 year difference or more is called statutory rape, with or without sex.

Youngest... 18
Oldest... 28

10 year span.

Did you read what you typed, before you posted it? Rape needs sex in order to make it work.

I don't really care about age, as in the number, but there's something about younger people that completely turns me off. But as a general rule of thumb I don't more than two years down.

Then again I'm used to seeing 29 year olds with 14 year olds so who cares in the end.

Just from my past experience (me 18, her 16) I have to say that the High School Divide previously mentioned can have a huge and sudden impact on a relationship. Not just at the time, but when the younger person crosses over into College age they can, and probably will, have a complete 180 degree change of heart. No matter how "sure" things seem. So my advice is that if you find yourself in that situation, do not expect a lasting relationship.

If this was 20 to 18? No problem. Hell anything to 18, as long as it's above, I really don't have a problem with (for my age, I'm working above by 7 and below by 4).

18 to 16? It only takes one time for the girl to get pissy, she cries rape, you get hammered. No offense to anyone ever involved in one of these types of relationships...but unless you know for 100% certainty that the people involved aren't going to cry jailbait, I would give it a no go.

Besides, there's a good likelihood that, if they're worth it, they'll be around in a year or two anyways. Most people, however, wouldn't have the tolerance to wait for love that long.

I'm 25 right now, and it could be that the biggest gap will be five years, if things go as they are on pace to go right now. Although I'm sure you can tell just how enthusiastic I am about that. Thing is, it's a little weird. At this point, I'd rather 21 be the minimum, assuming they're actually mature.

That'd be the big one for me too.

I don't need someone who's still in high school in their own mindset. :\

Someone who is 18 going out with someone who is 14 seems a bit weird, yet someone who is 34 who met someone who is 30 seems fine.

Just depends on the age I reckon.

I would think it more depends on the culture than the age, there are a few places on earth where 18 going with a 14 year old is perfectly normal.

My last girlfriend was quite a bit older than me. I present this chart.

Her 31-34
Me 17-21

That just goes to show you that age is a number. We had quite a bit in common also. We simply broke it off because I wanted to go back to school but my school is very far away.

I agree that difference in age isn't an issue. But the high school/college barrier can be.

*edit* Especially when you can't go out a lot of places together and have to sneak visits because her parents are pretty sure there's something going on and hate you for it.
