To quote Ian...

La-Mulana is a freeware free-roaming platformer game designed to look, sound, and play like a classic MSX game. It's heavily influenced by the classic Konami MSX game "The Maze of Galious" and anyone who has played that title will probably recognize the similarities very quickly. You play the whip-wielding Indiana Jones-esque archaeologist Lemeza Kosugi as he investigates the ancient ruins of La-Mulana in an attempt to find its treasure and one-up his father, who is trying to get the same treasure as well.

The game is huge, with many different areas to explore and dozens of items and weapons to find. Each area has a large variety of puzzles and traps (many of them quite fiendish) and you need to solve the puzzles in each area to discover the Ankhs and Ankh Jewels, which allow you to fight the eight Guardians of the ruins. To solve the puzzles you'll need to be able to read the tablets scattered throughout the ruins, which will require a Hand Scanner and translation software for the portable MSX that Lemeza has brought along on the adventure. Your Hand Scanner will also allow you to find items and search the bones of less fortunate adventurers.

La-Mulana is one of the longest freeware games I've played in quite some time--my first playthrough took me 26 hours, and even if you knew exactly what to do for each puzzle in advance I'd still bet the game would take at least 10-12 hours to complete, not counting the bonus dungeon.

It's now completely translated, and fully enjoyable by an English audience! Enjoy!

I played a small portion of this once I heard you had translated it, and I have to say the game mechanics are very smooth, and it seemed like an awesome game. Can't wait to play through this

Wait-wuh? If it's a freeware game then it's clearly a PC game right? Why is it in ROM hacking?

Maybe you didn't apply the patch correctly, since the shops are working ok for me.

We bend the rules a tad, for the same reason we talk about hacking Playstation games (Playstation uses CD format).

There is a level editor for the game, although it is not translated, you could use it to make some pretty neet adventures without having to implement your own engine.

You don't remember that stint of cave-story hacking? Also note the title is "ROM Hacking-Related Releases," not "ROM Hacking or GTFO"

I remember the Cave Story hacking (Still have Miza or whatever it was called) but I don't recall it being in ROM Hacking.

Oh and subanark. Thank you for informing me that Playstation does not use ROMs but actually uses a CD format! This is complete news to me! Thanks so much!!!

Ok... lets not get caught up on a technicality; I just wanted to give an example of how the term "rom hack" has evolved.

Play the game. Have fun. It really is a lot of fun!

Maybe we should just change it to Rom/ISO (or whatever CD image you might be using) hacking...

Actually ROM would still be the correct term for hacking disc based games. It's common sense really.

If you don't think this topic belongs here, then bring it up with the moderators. If you want to discuss the defination and use of the term "ROM", please do so in another discussion.

For the rest of us:
A lot of work went into this translation and a huge amout of work went into this game. I love this game, I've beaten it several times. All I ask is that you try it, you won't be disapointed.

As per the usual, either stop whing about "ROM Hacking" titles here (Yes, Cave Story was in fucking ROM Hacking, thanks)...

"ROM" is just a better catch-all than "Game". It's a more used term for what we do here anyway.

Christ, you people bitch about -the- stupidest shit. Maybe you should all stfu, play the game and uh...oh yea talk about the game!

And yea, I definitely will pick this up. I was kinda wondering when the next big 'CS-like' craze would hit. It's almost a yearly thing now. First CS, then the small timey Lyle in Cube Sector. Now this.

Might as well. :\
