I'm not actually looking for your advice concerning my own sketches today, I'm actually looking for advice about how to re-create a certain look...

I've been trying to produce a look in my drawings akin to Ryu's Form Site for about a year now. On thing I like about his style is that he clearly finishes his drawings digitally, but retains a texture that makes them look like they've been hand inked and coloured using physical materials.

I'm confident he inks his lineart on paper, and scans in the drawing to colour it digitally. His lineart is quite bold and definate, but does not seem to be ink, as the lines appear to vary in texture and darkness when looked at zoomed in.

Here's a few things I've tried:

Brush Pen:
Produces a thick line that varies too much in thickness. Darkness does not vary much. I've found that using A4 size paper makes it difficult to produce a clean line when blown up to colour the drawing.

Fineline Pen:
Produces a line that is fairly consistent but does not vary in darkness. The texture is bold, but fairly plain.

Pencil:
Produces a fine line that is approaching the thickness I need when using A4 paper and blown up. Varies in texture but is not very bold. Relatively light line makes it difficult to fade out accidental markings on paper using Photoshop.

Can anyone suggest other materials I can try? I'm willing to try different kinds of pens, pencils and paper. One thing that I'm interested in trying next is charcoal. It would produce a similar texture to pencils but will produce a darker, bolder line. I've been eyeing up a small set of charcoal pencils, what do you think?
