| How can it possibly be so popular? It's japanese for "ARE" for crying out loud. I've seen pictures and pictures of "desu desu desu desu desu desu" and crud like that. Why is it so popular? Are the people in japan interested in saying "are are are are are are are"?
This is a weird phenominon that does indeed need mention. |

| It's neither "are" nor "this" really. Linguists refer to it as a "polite copula"; it is just appended to sentences to make them sound more polite/formal while at the same time putting a little emphasis on the contents. (The latter property can be compared with the difference between English "It's a cat." and "It is a cat.") If anything, "is" is the closest you can translate it.
From what I know, the memetic usage of "desu" stems from some Anime where a character appended it to like every single spoken sentence, without exception. (Yes, you for most parts really could do that in spoken Japanese; it would, however, sound odd) Can't tell the details, though, since I didn't watch it. |

| Desu is the Japanese verb meaning "to be".
Its popularity among desutards stems from the character SuiSeiSeki from the anime Rozen Maiden. From the little I've seen, she doesn't really say desu any more than anyone else. But then, chantard memes rarely make sense. |

Μ ΌO Ν e Ε· Watashi no namae wa Ten desu. My name is Ten. ρ\Z Λ Ε· Nijuuroku sai desu Age 26. Thing is, the closest translation for the word desu is "Statement is true." | I have to go with Ten, it's a standard word somehow used to end a positive sentence. So desu ne?
One important thing to note about the Japanese language is, that its grammatically completely different from English or any other Roman language. Turkish and similar languages are more like Japanese. Japanese sentences consist, how my Japanese teacher says, of a topic and a Rhema (Zu Deutsch: Ein Thema und ein Rhema). Taking Ten's example: Watashi no namae wa Ten desu. Watashi no namae wa => is the topic of the sentence, what the speaker will be talking about. after the 'wa', the Rhema comes in, which does all kind of things with the topic. Here it states that 'my name' is 'Ten'. And this can applied throughout the entire Japanese language. Without exceptions. And so, the word 'desu' is just a part of the Rhema. Like 'imase' and 'arimasen' ect. May Ten knows more about this. |

Let the actual Japanese person enlighten you all on this 
desu really DOES mean is though, more or less. You cannot say Watashi ga hito (I am some person), without the desu. Because it is saying, is. Watashi - me, I ga - particle, emphasis on subject (could be wa, emphasis on action) hito - person desu - form of am, in this case. Otherwise, it would just translate as I person. Similarly, Watashi ga hito de wa arimasen (or Watashi wa hito janai) could be NOT to be. Again, Watashi - I, me ga - particle hito - person de wa arimasen/janai - am NOT. Notice how it takes the place of desu, making it "am not". Remove the janai and you're back with I person. Similarly, if you say Watashi wa okimas (I wake up), it is wrong. You need the desu, since it means basically I am waking up, or I will be waking up (the future and present forms of speech are the same). Or else, you get I waking up. That does not sound right, because it is not right. That is how it is. It just is, no matter what any one else says. 
edit: it is not compulsory it is just proper for formal main-dialect speech. Of course, if you're osaka you say the hell with that. You also run yellow lights, listen to Kanjani8, and make up words mid-sentence, all the while everyone involved in the conversation somehow knowing what you mean. But that's besides the point. I had some random guy I didn't know IM me on AIM a few months ago, asking me some questions. When I replied that I had no idea what he was talking about and he must have meant to talk to someone else, his reply was something along the lines of "oh, right, [DESU about 4000 times]".  I guess he was trying to DoS me with a ridiculously large message, but it only ended up kicking him off instead.  Why, I'll probably never know. |

| unicode stands for 'universal code', and it works on every decent browser, regardless of your encoding settings.
And yes, 才 is a valid kanji for age, and is far more common than 歳. And, windwaker: Nothing originates from 4chan /b/ As I said before, the 'desu' fad originated from the anime Rozen Maiden. It was then picked up by 2channel, and 4chan copied 2chan (as usual). |
