I couldn't help but notice that the other sticky threads here were full of misinformation. This is my attempt to rectify this.

  1. The ROM hacking forums are read-only to the general public due to a general want to keep people with absolutely no qualifications in. This is not to say that newbies are barred from entering; many newbies are more than capable of giving adequate information and analysis. Qualifications, in this case, is being able to list one's general abilities (and, if applicable, project information and a few screenshots) over the course of one or two paragraphs. Not hard.

  2. To obtain "approved" status, you'll first need to tell us (the staff) a little bit about yourself. You do this by creating one new thread in the Approval Request forum, and using the generous space provided to explain who you are and what you plan to contribute. As previously stated, this should be at least one or two paragraphs in length. If you are not approved and wish to try again, do not make a new thread; doing so will simply cause the new thread to be deleted and discounted. If, after a few days, your application hasn't been checked by staff, please feel free to bump the thread. However, do not do this every day; it will almost certainly be reviewed in a timely manner, but if not, annoying the staff with repeated bumps is not going to help. Note that, in general, bumps are not smiled upon in other the other forums; if there is new, relevant data about a subject (especially in the ROM hacking forums) then it's acceptable, but pointless bumps (for instance, a mere post saying 'bump') are considered spam.

  3. Certain individuals, possibly including yourself, have names that are red. This is a warning flag; people with red names are under review for a past offense or past offenses. If a person is rednamed, they cannot be approved, and if they already are approved the approval will be revoked until the red name is cleared. I repeat: If your name is in RED, don't bother applying; you won't get in.

  4. Fluency in English is required to be accepted (as may be expected); intelligence is, perhaps wrongly, often judged based on dialect. If English is a second language to you and you state this, people will be much more lenient in their assessment of you, but if you are incomprehensible, use internet slang to excess, or use ill-formed contractions (such as ur, cuz, y, and other such things) then you will be judged poorly and likely rejected. Do not be confused; you need not be even close to as eloquent as I, and the vast majority here are not. Simply put, if you are able to effectively (and intelligibly) speak your thoughts in the language used here, then you have nothing to worry about.

  5. If, after reading your application, we feel you'll be a benefit to the forums (or, at least, not a detriment), you'll be granted Approval to post in the ROM hacking forums. However, if it's obvious that you don't plan to contribute anything, or the staff feels your behavior is inappropriate for the forums, then you will not be approved. If this is the case, you can either appeal the decision, or wait a while and try applying again (unless the staff deems their decision to be final, in which case whining will get you nowhere). Do not pester staff if you don't get approved -- you'll only hurt your chances of future approval, and you may be banned entirely. (Abusive behavior towards staff or other members will result in being banned.)

  6. Please remember, the Approval Request forum is for approval requests only. Posts in other people's threads will earn you nothing but a redname, and thus instant disapproval. The same is generally posting here for any reason other than to gain yourself approval.

  7. Keep in mind that approval is NOT permanent, and can be revoked at any time if you screw up badly enough or too often. As previously stated, earning yourself a red name will also earn yourself revoked approval. If this happens, you must re-apply for approval - you will not be re-approved automatically. And, of course, re-applying while in possession of a red name will get you nowhere.

  8. Remember: access to the ROM Hacking forums -- and this board as a whole -- is a privilege, not a right. Staff reserve the right to remove your access to these forums for any reason, although generally, you can post in your application thread if you need more detail as to why your access has been removed.

Many thanks to BMF, whose old sticky thread was invaluable in the construction of this one.
