I'm using a free FTP hoster called 1111mb.com, and I never used FTP hosting before. I know about the stuff like the port, and the other stuff, but I'm planning on using web FTP hosting, and I was just wondering, how does it work?

The real question I'm asking is, will web FTP hosting atomaticly create a FTP folder in my hard drive? Sorry if I didn't make any sense.

FTP hosting by itself isn't going to do anything on your hard drive.

Is this FTP support for downloads, or just to upload your files?

I have no idea, but its web FTP hosting. I never tried it, and Dreamweaver FTP access doesn't work on there, unless I upgrade, and I think its gonna cost me money (and I'm only 14 years-old, and I know HTML (a little). I know that there are some programs that I can use for FTP access, but I don't want to pay for it at the moment.

There are plenty of free ftp clients, and there is actually one built right into Internet Explorer. You should read your host's FAQ.

You use the ftp client to upload files to you host's server, then the file can be downloaded off their server through http, probably not ftp, at least not without giving out your username and password.

I think I'll just try to save up for the program. Do you know any other free ftp clients?

FileZilla is the best client for Windows I've found so far.

I agree. That's the client I use all the time, and it works wonder, it's not big. It's awesome.

I use the FileZilla server, but for a client I use SmartFTP.

FileZilla looks even better than SmartFTP (I was talking about that program that would cost me money). Thanks guys. Now I can try this bad boy out (as soon as I get my site layout done).

Just because a program has a 30-day trial period doesn't mean it actually stops working after 30 days.

See, for example: SmartFTP, WinZip, WinRAR, mIRC, and so forth.

SmartFTP is only a trial for commercial users. If your "trial" runs out and you have the software for noncommercial use, you just need to download the latest version, which is exactly what it tells you to do on "trial up" window.

Are you getting an error message? Or is it just not doing anything?

If a port # is not given, you should always use port 21.

Then make sure you're using ftp protocol in the address bar (i.e ftp://blah, not http://blah).

If that fails, check your notes from your administrator to make sure you're not misspelling your username or password.

If THAT doesn't connect you, you probably didn't make the account successfully, or you're trying to connect as anonymous and there's no anonymous login.

I was thinking if I had to type in the ftp URL, not the regular URL. I'll try that out.
