Here's pretty much everything Ok Impala! and myself gathered so far ever since we started hacking Super Mario Kart...
We originally thought we'd release them at the same time we'd release Epic Racers, but we changed our mind... http://stifu.free.fr/dl/smk_offsets.chm These notes are incomplete and probably contain a few incorrect offsets or descriptions, so feel free to send any addition or correction to me (stifu at free.fr). Maybe you guys would prefer the whole document to be viewable online via simple HTML files ? I could do that too... Any other suggestion, let me know. |

I’m glad you’ve opened this up to the public. These notes have already been shared with me and have helped no end with my hack.
It’s a really comprehensive set of notes and to be honest I’ve not even scratched the surface of can now be changed with the aid of these offsets yet. With regard to the notes I'd love to see some list with GlitchCog's SMK pallet data, with all your offsets, D4s' notes and all known stuff in one place. Thanks for sharing all you and Ok Impala!'s hard work, let’s hope this inspires some more people to SMK hack - and maybe make an new editor will turn up. |

I still have to add everything that's in other people's SMK notes, but I like to double check everything first... Like I know I'm missing a fair load of Time Trial data and texts.
Also, my notes about sounds and musics are quite vague because I have no knowledge when it comes to those, so some people should easily be able to write more detailed notes about that... |

Thank you Stifu and OK Impala. You guys are awesome. That's some fantasticly organized data too.
Can't wait to see Epic Racers. Edit: If you want to include any of the palette mapping stuff I've been working on, feel free to take any info you want. (edited by GlitchCog on 01-11-07 01:13 PM) |

Glad you like the doc file.
At some point, as our notes (that were in a simple text file) started getting quite big, I thought it'd be better to have everything in a tidy file with multiple pages... Moreover, having organized our notes this way gave me a better overview of everything, which helped me to find all the compressed graphics we were missing. When looking for something that could be anywhere, it's good to know where you don't need to look, too... Anyway, I'm note sure I had a look at your palette stuff, can you link me ? |

Yep, I've had this site bookmarked for a while actually, but I wasn't sure it was this one... as it doesn't say "GlitchCog" anywhere.
I could add that data as subpages when you click one of the palettes... (edited by Stifu on 01-11-07 02:47 PM) |

Yeah, that's my site. I added GlitchCog to it now to avoid any future confusion. And I added and credited you and OK Impala with the location of the trophy presentation palette. I would have never thought to decompress already decompressed data, but I'm not a very good ROM hacker either. Is that a common thing to find?
Go ahead and take all the palette info if you want to add it to your notes for the sake of completeness. I can give it to you in different formats if you want the colors bits switched back or something too- just let me know. Dirtbag, here's some screens from my Earthbound Kart hack I'm working on: http://matt.yanos.com/ebk |

Originally posted by GlitchCog I have no idea. I'm mostly a beginner too, it's just that I never give up until I've managed to do what I want, and blind hacking doesn't scare me. It's the only double compressed data we've found in the ROM so far... I don't know how it is for other games at all. Originally posted by GlitchCog Well, actually, I would have organized the data differently: palette per palette (whether they're 16 or 4-color palettes). Doing it color per color makes things a bit more confusing (as there are no definite packs that stand out), and it also makes things ultra-specific to the original (unmodified) SMK... I think it's more interesting to know which palette is used on a certain object rather than knowing the bright blue of one palette is used in a certain background in the original game... But that's just me being anal. Still useful data. Originally posted by GlitchCog I remember having seen a few of those screens before (I hadn't seen the title screen though), looks nice so far. |

Originally posted by GlitchCog Wow that looks really cool, I see how you've found so many colours. I like you way to get around the Mario/Luigi problem by using the palettes. I'm using a quite similar method but not quite so cunning to deal with it myself. I’ve put my two female racer friends in and was going to use different pallets as one is mixed race with dark hair and the other is white and blond. Oh and both are smokers Now you have those note you can get changing the players names. |

Just so you guys know, I keep updating this file once in a while.
Recently, we added sound sample offsets (data pack 4 and 5), as well as all the Time Trial text data we were missing (data pack 3). To know whether the notes have been updated since the last time you downloaded them, check my profile bio, I added the latest update date in there. |

Thanks, Stifu.
So what does it mean for Epic Racers that you decided to release this data early? Is it just taking a lot longer than you were thinking, or are you going to be doing a lot more with sound than you planned or something? |

We want to document as much stuff as possible whether we use that data or not, because it's quite useful in the end... For example, if I'm looking for some random data, I know it can't be located where the sound data is, so that means less time wasted doing tests there... We also want our notes to be (and stay) a reference when it comes to SMK hacking, so the more complete it is, the better.
But we do want to change sound samples too (I even posted a topic about it that was left unanswered, but whatever)... Actually, we keep setting our goals higher and higher. At first, we never thought we'd be able to change the title screen, the color palettes or the driver stats, but people released hack notes about the game, and we also improved quite a bit... As for why we released our notes earlier than originally announced, that's mostly because we don't think we'll be able to release Epic Racers as early as planned. The main reason behind that is that DJ Bouche said he'd make a new track editor with a lot more options and stuff, you may remember that from the last Epic Racers thread... but I haven't had news from him for like half a year, so I guess he lost interest... I'm not blaming him or anything though... Anyway, that's why I decided to make the track editor we need myself, but I'd rather have Bouche's confirmation that he's giving up first (I actually mailed him just today)... And I also need to document in detail a lot of stuff before I start work on the editor. (In my mail to Bouche, I also ask him if he can give me his notes about track editing, that'd save me a lot of time...) (edited by Stifu on 01-19-07 04:05 PM) |
