Hey, I just finished this video from a load of footage I got at a parkour meetup last week, so I thought I'd show you guys:

YouTube - Dublin Parkour & Tricking Jam

Comments?

That's pretty awesome, I like when you're sideways on the polls. Requires a lot of strength. The whole video was enjoyable.

Very cool dude.

Aaw that was amazing. You guys are really talented. My friends do "parkour".. but not really like that.

I liked it when you leaped and grabbed onto the ledge. It was like tomb raider style. That's really hard to do.

Noice. [=

Yeah. I would have to be crazy to attempt that until I had the talent

That was pretty awesome though. I liked the part where you flipped over the horizontal pole and slid under before even regaining your balance. Crazy And I, also, liked the sideways pole part. That seems like it would kill your abdominal area.

Very nice work!

Most impressive stuff was the balancing acts, easily.

The pole thing seems like it was the most physically demanding bit of the entire video. Although if I were to do that ledge-grab, I'd have to be wearing gloves...

A lot of the vaults looks like they could have been done a bit cleaner/faster, though some of the tricks weren't that bad. I liked the vault -> underbar that the one guy pulled off towards the middle.

The tic-tac/flips would have been a lot more impressive unassisted, as well.

You guys have a lot more skill than say, I do in parkour easily. Most impressive feat I can pull off is bearwalking/vaulting over a picnic table...

Just seems like there are two areas of parkour; speed and trickery. You guys are sort of in the middle of that, so things would be more impressive with a few more tricks pulled off, or the moves done faster and cleaner.

Although I liked your spot jump at the end, (I know those can be a pain to land) I wish you would have balanced on the pole afterwards.

Not bad, definitely keep it up.

Yeah, that was Crimson doing the reverse underbar. He's awesome; he's been at it about 2 years and can do nearly anything.

Erm, the human flag... it's not too tough; just takes a lot of practice. When you're first learning it, it really starts to hurt your biceps, but now I can actually climb up the pole, and do a human flag vertically, so I'm upside down, and aligned with the pole. Crazy shit.

My handsprings are really messy, I know. _¬ I was actually working on them today before a load of chavs came up and started asking me if they could film me on their phones. But thanks for the advice.

Haha, yeah, the assisted wallflip, I'd love so fucking much to be able to do it on my own. I'm slowly getting there, though.

Nice to hear of somebody else from somewhere like here who does parkour.

Haha, yeah, I can actually do that, and jump a lot further to one too, but I jumped too far and slipped, it was late, I was tired, and the girl filming it would have killed me if I asked her to shoot it again properly.

Thanks a lot for all the comments, everyone!

Mainly used to. I've never really practiced anything. I heard of it last summer when a friend of mine was practicing it during Track practice, and so I just started doing that. (Polevault coach is only there three days a week, my feat in Track)

Mostly, I never really learned anything new. I practiced rolls a bit (I still suck at them, should practice sometime.) and made myself do stuff that I was worried of killing myself attempting beforehand, and it was a good amount of fun.

Problem is, the only real place that is semi-decent for parkour stuff is my school, and even that is 15 miles away... Maybe I could practice vaults over the hood of my car or something..

I'll give you this: I suck at flipping, and about the most impressive thing I can do is hurdle a Jersey barrier or vault up a wall about my height at a full run, but I'm a fan of what you did at the end there, jumping across from post to post like that. You've got some ability, Pac. The vid made me grin.

The obstacles can be anything in the environment, so parkour is often practiced in urban areas because of many suitable public structures, such as buildings, rails, and walls.
So, um, the vast, vast majority of this utterly fails at what you claim it is. Handstands? Cartwheels over objects? What the fuck is that? You, at most points, perform a more stylish move rather than go as fast as possible. That's not parkour at all. Not to mention that those more stylish moves are ridiculously simple and offer very little style. DrUnoriginal is right in his comments, flips are clearly superior for that. So yeah, you fail in several ways.

Don't lie when labelling your videos, kay?

Tricking, Alastor. I labeled it Tricking, too.

Yes, flips are better. I'd love to be able to front flip on concrete, but I lack the confidence to jump high enough before I take off, and end up landing on my ass. Not fun. And I can't backflip yet either, but that's not really the point, is it?

You edited your post? Oh dear, and I had this image prepared too.

By the way, kongs, reverses, dashes, lazies... they're not Tricking, just the same way flips aren't parkour. So it is both.

Alastor, just because something is called something that it isn't by definition, doesn't mean it can't be called that. Bugs are what people call most insects, when bugs are really a certain category of insects, not every insect. There are many other examples as well. If this video is called a "Parkour Video," and it resembles it enough to be called that by the vast majority of all the people who have seen it, it isn't really wrong to call it that. REALLY it isn't what it exactly claims to be, but it is close enough to avoid being called "falsely named." It resembles it close enough to be called what it resembles. I myself would call it a "Parkour Video." Deal with it.
By the way, it was a good video, and with practice, you could become much better.

As an avid fan of parkour, I take offense to the implication that it is about anything other than what I previously defined it as. If you water it down, it is not parkour; thus, this is not parkour. Your analogy is completely wrong; bug is common slang, but this is not. What you are saying is that every martial art can be correctly called kung fu. They have similarities, but they are most definitely NOT the same (and indeed, in many the similarities are pitifully insignificant). If you use tricks, it's not Parkour, it's free running, a different and in my opinion vastly inferior practice. That is what he should have said, and that is not what he said. I would not so much mind if he said "Sorry, I guess I mislabelled it" or even "Yeah, it's incorrect, but you don't need to be so rude about it." But did he do that? Has he even admitted at all that it's incorrect? Has anyone else? No.

Well, no, very very no. Parkour is parkour. It's already been defined by David Belle. Parkour is about getting from point A to point B in the most efficient way possible. No unnecessary twists, grabs, or flips, as they only drain your energy, which destroys the purpose of efficiency.

It's really wrong to say that tricks are part of parkour, especially because of all the controversy it's caused it's caused in the past. Not to mention 'free-running.'

EDIT: Alastor, I haven't denied that I mislabeled the thread. You're right; I should have labaled it 'Parkour & Tricking Video,' but I didn't to keep it short. I thought that labeling the video as I did would be enough.

Here here. But keep in mind that, irrelevant of their opinions of free-running, a lot of traceurs don't like to be referred to as free-runners, even if they keep their tricks seperate from their vaults.

EDIT 2: Alastor, do you actually practice parkour?

I used to do this kind of stuff when I was younger, although I didn't know it was an actual established discipline or sport of any kind, so I didn't call it any special name like, parkour or tricking or anything like that. My Grandpa had a pretty creative name for it though, he called it "being a damn fool."

That shit was a titanic pain in the ass in Tony Hawk's American Wasteland. But it would be nifty if I could do that.
