okay, we all know about linux and BSD. You don't really have to be a hardcore geek to have heard of them nowadays, as they are probably the wave of the future.
but aside from them, there are other OSs out there too, mostly unix based, but with the masses of fans for linux/BSD, finding those other operating systems is next to impossible via google. anyway, from what I know there is Plan9, an insanely different, yet from what I've seen quite fast/responsive operating system with decent hardware support out-of-the-box, considering what it is. there's also opensolaris -- I've been meaning to download this one. It's a "true" unix in the sense that it is solaris, from sun, in a open source/free version. I've heard its slow on x86 machines, but what about amd64? I want to dive into this one, and have some fun with it. I already have a plan9 iso burnt, but wow, I can barely figure out the commands for it. I couldn't even find a substitute for find (well, I did find look...) I really like it for some reason though. Although I think that some changes (copy to snarf for example) were just inane and pointless. But I like it's aesthetics, and the way it feels. It also boots/runs quite quickly, even off the liveCD. anyway, what are other free operating systems outside the realm of BSD and linux (other unixes count too!)? I'm on a quest to screw around with as many as possible in my free time, and maybe learn a bit in between too. |

If you feel masochistic, there's Darwin. |
