Kaede sat up, fighting the heavy fog in her head. It took her a moment to regain composure.

She recognized the girl's face at the same time her words registered. Kaede tensed and subconsciously grabbed handfulls of the sheets as she looked up, eyes wide with astonishment. "You are... that girl from before! The one he called 'a pawn of the Church.' How did you--?" She coughed and paused before continuing. "About what you said just now. I don't think the Genkimetsu were using him at all, though I'm sure having him around didn't hurt. They're like his family, and I believe they love him. Whether they've corrupted him or not is beyond my judgment."

Kaede noticed her burn-wounds had been dressed in ointment and bandages she in a clean while gown, and her clothes were folded neatly nearby. Daikirai's blood had all but been washed out of her pale blue attire, and the burned patches from the black flames had been mended. She nodded towards them and touched the medical wrapping encircling her forehead. "Thanks for that." She thought in wonderment how this beautiful girl no older than herself could be the face of the enemy before going on, "I guess this means you got him, too. What are you planning on doing with Daikirai, now that your forces have finally captured him-- unless I'm mistaken?" And what could they possibly want with me? she thought. Or perhaps she hasn't turned us in yet...? Somehow I doubt it,

Suki: We are helping him of course. He is in one of our healing chambers. The seals we've set up are helping to seal the demon again and heal his wounds. I don't think you believe me. He's already up, come I'll show you.

She leads Kaede down various halls. Eventually they came upon a wooden door with a cross engraved upon it. Suki opened the door. And upon a large circular platform in the middle of the room lay Daikirai. His upper body was bandaged as well as his legs. He seemed to be at ease, for his breathing was normal.

Suki: Daikirai your friend is here.

Daikirai sits up and gestures for her to come closer.

Daikirai: Don't worry. I've seen my mistake. Suki is trying to help us. I don't know about the Church but she definitely wants to help us. Thank you as well for helping me.

He moves to the edge of the circle and extends his hand to her, then withdraws it.

Daikirai: I can leave the seal . . . however . . .

His arm began to bleed.

Daikirai: I'm not fully healed. The healing seals work more slowly than the ones that were for resealing the demon. Because that took priority.

Suki hung her head.

Suki: It took the lives of two of my companions to help him. However they died for the greater good.

Daikirai extends his other hand and places it upon Suki's face, and he hangs his head.

Daikirai: I'm sorry. I know the pain of loss too.

He then sits back within the seals.

Daikirai: I don't know how I'll repay the two of you. You helped me when my family did not.

"Well... it looks like I had you wrong. I was under the impression that you were our enemy-- remember that little battle the other day? You, or at least those you've aligned yourself with, are the enemy of the Genkimetsu, which Daikirai (and myself, I guess), was obviously a part of--" She took a moment to work through the situation in her head. Now in the presence of friends, she appeared to be more relaxed. Kaede finally declared, "Right, now I'm confused. But in any case, you've probably saved both our lives, or at least Daikirai's, and in my book that's reason enough to trust you. I'm in your debt. Thanks," Kaede said with a smile and a brisk nod.

"Now... do you know how long he'll take to heal?" She gazed at the incredible seal that slowly restored the boy who had just hours ago been a hair's breadth from death with-- envy? Such powers were far beyond the scope of her present abilities. She vowed to work harder to become an even better healer. Kaede then turned to Daikirai, "What are you going to do next? I'm not sure which path is the right one for me, right now. I'd rather not join the insurgents who call themselves the Genkimetsu, but I'm not sure about the Church, either. What will you do?"

Suki: For now his wounds are only lightly sealed. Movement outside of the seal will reopen them. He is quickly recovering. The seal is working on the whole of his body at once. I'm estimating an approximate 1-2 week recovery time. Maybe shorter.

Daikirai looks down, his bangs conceal his face somewhat.

Daikirai: I'm not too sure. I think I might just . . . move along with the wind like a cloud. I've got nothing better to do.

He lays back on the raised stone pedestal, looking up at the ceiling and the seal's dancing lights which were upon it.

Daikirai: I need to find some sort of purpose now. They abandoned me. Family does not abandon each other. I remember that much. My parents died trying to protect me. I went berserk and afterwards I wandered from place to place. Never finding anyone who would care for me.

Suki: The Church heard of you then. When they rediscovered who it was that had become the vessel of negative emotions they began the search for me. We've been searching for you. I can't ask you to trust them, but at least trust me. I will help you in any way I can. After all I've been charged with looking after you.

Suki reaches to Daikirai and places a hand on his cheek. He looks down.

Daikirai: I've got nothing better to do. Will you come with me Kaede? I feel like there is something I need to do . . . before I go with you Suki. You are welcome to come with me. I have to say goodbye to some people from my past.

It didn't take long for her to reply. "Sure, I'll go with you. I don't really have a path to follow, so I'll just have to see what happens and obey my instinct. Just let me know when you're feeling good enough to travel."

A week later.

Daikirai: Come let's go now.

Suki: I'll be coming with you if you don't mind.

Daikirai: No. I don't mind.

The three of them walk away from the large stone building on the outskirts of town. Daikirai bites his fingertips and begins to draw a seal in the air. A door opens in the air, through it there can be seen a field of gravestones. With one lone willow tree, standing near a cliff, and below that was the roaring ocean. He steps through it and goes to the two tomb stones beneath the willow tree. He kneels in front of it quietly and hangs his head.

((I was kinda expecting another post...? Ok then, I'll just go ahead))

Kaede stepped through as well. She felt the cool rush of seaspray on her face as soon as she set foot into the new realm and a soft wind played through her hair. All was quiet except the gentle rolling of the ancient sea. It seemed this new world had been created solely for the purpose of being a final resting place for the dead; as dignified and solemn as a chapel, earth, sea, and sky all played a soft requiem. The heavens were a mournful chalky gray and the willow tree itself, a tired sentry, seemed to weep as droplets from a recent storm that had caught in its branches watered the earth. Its limbs were weighted down by the rain and hung limply as the water fell in small trickles, as one weakened by abject sorrow and hours of crying.

She observed Daikirai's reverent posture before the tombstone and bowed her head similiarly out of respect. Holding her folded hands to her chest just under her chin, she uttered a soft prayer of condolence for the deceased's survivors and for the former a peaceful rest.

Sorry I haven't posted in so long. My internet has been done, much to my chagrin. Well anyhow. I'll post more for this story once I get some sight as to where I'm heading next. This is a good time for other people to jump in. Or if you are currently in the story. Would you be so kind as to give me a hand? Just take a little liberty in directing the story. Thanks much.

((That's ok, I was beginning to figure as much. I can take more liberty in posts from now on, sure; I was hesitant before since you seemed to have a clear-cut story in mind. ...Ok then, looking forward to the next post! ~^))

Uhhh yeah . . . still blank . . . for future reference for all. The story is only clear cut in the sense that we must reach a certain point. How we reach it doesn't matter so much. So go ahead, please give me a hand.

((Hmm... I've been thinking about this for a couple days, let's see... Here goes nothin')) ((By the way, how do you pronounce "Daikirai"? Is it [die-KEE-ray]?))

Kaede left Daikirai knelt before the tombstone, immersed in his thoughts. She tread across the earth softly and found a bare patch a little ways away. She scratched a small quantity of soil off the top layer of earth and rubbed it between her fingers. This particular graveyard was very old indeed; the soil had been enriched by the minerals of centuries of decomposing bodies. It was elegant in a morbid way.

Kaede was roused from her brief respite by the sound of steel on fresh earth. Looking up, she strode towards the source of the sound. A man nearing the end of middle age was digging a grave, his back hunched prematurely from years of his work. "'Morning, sir," he greeted him, and he looked up, returning the greeting. The blade of his shovel once again tasted earth, when he stiffened. Kaede looked at him, suprised. Before she had opened her mouth, his bowed head whipped up with alarming speed and the color drained from his lined face. His pale eyes clouded with horror as he looked at her. The man's head budged slightly, then more noticably, then he swung it furiously from side to side and panted. "V-vengeful spirit of the young g-girl! Please forgive me, I--" he halted and slumped to his knees, cowering before her. A small scream escaped her lips. "What... is--?" she said in a harsh whisper.

She noticed the name inscribed upon the unblemished white stone.

Daikirai is pronounced (die-key-rye).

Daikirai rose to his feet, and walked over. He placed a hand on Kaede's shoulder and stood beside her. He looked at the stone, and blinked a few times, then scratched his head.

Daikirai: (mumbles) What an interesting thing we have here.

Suki: What is it?

Daikirai: It appears that this grave here . . . is also the grave of Kaede . . .

Suki: How odd . . . well . . . you know how they say each of us has a twin somewhere in life. Maybe she was yours . . . and just so happened to have the same name.

Daikirai: I hardly think that is the case.

Daikirai takes her hand in his and squeezes it. He then places a hand on her cheek. Tilting his head, he paused for a moment. He placed his hands beneath her arms and lifted her for a moment then set her down.

Daikirai: She seems real enough to me. So . . . ghost theory is out.

Suki: What ghost theory? No one said anything about ghosts!

Daikirai: It's what I thought.

Suki slaps him over the head.

Suki: (mutters) Dolt.

Daikirai ignores her and takes the shovel from the man and starts to dig.

Numb, Kaede surveyed the scene: the man still sat hunched before her, shaking; Suki was bemused and slightly irked; and Daikirai had picked up the shovel and went about finishing the gravekeeper's job. Just beside the unfinished grave lay the coffin that housed the deceased.

As much to herself as anyone else, Kaede spoke up. "He... he recognized me. That must mean he's seen the deceased and she-- whoever she is--" Kaede ran a hand through her lavender tresses and patted down the length of her body, as if to assure herself she was still in the flesh-- "looks exactly like... me."

She trode to the coffin and used an adjusted version of a healing spell used to dislodge foreign objects from flesh to remove the nails in the lid of the coffin. Heart thumping loudly in her throat, she pushed the lid aside. Kaede's flesh creeped as she stared at the body that was hers but not hers, her own face nearly as pale as the dead girl's. The corpse was neatly dressed for burial and wore a pale blue gown, as elegant as anything she'd ever worn in life. But the body was so lifeless, it looked like a puppet, as of one that had never possessed life to begin with.

Kaede suddenly reached out and grabbed the arm of the corpse. Savagely, she rendt the flowing blue sleeve from the dress, to the horror of the gravekeeper who watched helplessly. She then tossed the sleeve behind her and scrutinized the arm, muttering something inaudible before she pronounced, "This is not my body," in a low voice. "I have a scar that was given to me by my uncle when I was five years old. Right here." She rolled up her own sleeve and muttered the same incantation to expose a grisly scar on her forearm, which she had previously cloaked with magic. "This corpse is a farce. Someone is trying to falsify my death." She looked to the gravekeeper and demanded, "What do you know?"

The grave-keeper shirked away, but Daikirai moved blindingly fast, and pinned him against a tree. His hand tightening upon the man's throat like an iron clamp. A wild look came into his eyes.

Daikirai: I love interrogation. I've had so much fun over the past years . . .

He lifted the man in the air by the throat and threw him down like a rag doll. Daikirai opened his mouth wide and licked his teeth like an animal. Black flames were swirling around him.

Suki: Daikirai!

His head whipped around to look at her once, then turned his attention back to the man.

Daikirai: Tell me . . .

His eyes were closed.

Daikirai: What you know!

He opened them, and within them, there was a terrible look. One that could hardly be described. The man began to scream in horrible fear, for what reason was hard to tell.

Suki: What are you doing to him?

Daikirai: I'm not doing it. His fears are.

Daikirai laughed to himself.

Suki: I understand what he's done. It's an ancient trick. You use your eyes as a conduit. Daikirai has induced an illusion on the man that is making him see his worst fears. This will go on as long as Daikirai wants it too.

It wasn't too long before the man curled up into a ball sobbing.

Grave-keeper: (whimpering) I'll tell . . . I'll tell . . .

Daikirai lifted the illusion by closing his eyes, and frowned and muttered something to himself about not having any fun.

Grave-keeper: The Church did it. They knew she was helping the monster, and they decided since they didn't have her to execute they'd make it look like she was dead. So they created that body. Even had a funeral.

Daikirai lifted the man by the scruff of the neck and held him over the cliff.

Daikirai: You've outlived your usefulness.
