"We are not evil. We don't harm or seduce people. We are not dangerous. We are ordinary people like you. We have families, jobs, hopes, and dreams. We are not a cult. This religion is not a joke. We are not what you think we are from looking at T.V. We are real. We laugh, we cry. We are serious. We have a sense of humor. You don't have to be afraid of us. We don't want to convert you. And please don't try to convert us. Just give us the same right we give you--to live in peace. We are much more similar to you than you think." Margot Adler

One of these days, I will sue Nintendo for introducing that fateful episode in Blaine's gym where Pikachu took down a Rhydon with Thunderbolt.
AIM FOR THE HORN!!!
My god, if Pokemon were like real-life, that would be the moral equivalent of me walking up to TEH GOVERNATOR, poking him in the stomach, and then declaring myself supreme dictator of England. And Canada. And the nation of Islam.

Time for me to think, again:

Couple of arguments I hear that the Revolution controller won't work seem themselves to be backed up by nothing more than those wanting to cling to the controller style gameplay. I'll just throw out some arguments against the controller, or against non-controller gameplay in general, and throw in my two cents.

1. Games were meant for the traditional two hand controller
Are they? Or are they that way because the popular gaming machines only use the two hand controller? This makes me think that people are uncreative in ways to play games. Just the players who make this argument, not the developers of games. And not in terms of game features or overall gameplay, but how the player him or herself interacts with the game physically beyond pressing buttons and pushing joysticks.

Of course we draw fine lines for which game genres work best for which type of controller, because apparently there are two major types: an actual handheld, and the keyboard/mouse. For example, many would agree that Real Time Strategy games work much better on a PC because in RTS games, you must think fast and act fast, and a controller is too cumbersome for that task. I'd also argue that first person shooters work better on a keyboard/mouse setup because for one, you have more buttons to do more individual tasks, most clumped in the left homerow region (it has to be!). Why? FPS games require fast acting and thinking, not to mention aiming. I feel a joy stick is cumbersome here as well. For example, Call of Duty 2 I had more problems with on the 360 because I couldn't fine tune my aim as well as I could with a mouse. This isn't a problem for games like Halo, Time Splitters, or even Goldeneye because most of the time you just had to make sure the enemy was somewhere in your crosshair (except with Goldeneye, auto-aim was your best friend).

I'd also argue that many other games can work just fine for the PC as well. I play Guilty Gear XX on my PC and I find it much more easier to play with than my PS2 controller when I plug it in the USB port (through an adaptor, of course). Although most of the commands are simply the same as Street Fighter-style play (the classic fireball and uppercut movements), I find it frustrating to do a half circle back forward on a controller, but I can pull it off with ease on the arrow keys. Games like the old Mario and such work just as easily on a keyboard as with a controller. Heck, even RPG's work. FFVII, FFVIII, and FFXI are both on console and PC (I believe Breath of Fire IV is, and some other stuff).

2. It won't attract casual gamers.
Looking up casual, I found it to mean pretty much those who aren't dedicated fans. But does this mean a casual gamer owns a PC, GCN, PS2, and Xbox? Or does it mean the person can play games, but doesn't really play games?

In the arcade, there are only three types of games that remain popular: Fighting, shooting, and racing (I could throw in BeMani, but this applies to Japan only). Of the three, two are interactive (BeMani is interactive). People like to do more than sit down and press buttons it seems. I find a game more fun to play when I can actually do something that's relevant to the style of gameplay. Okay, so what the heck does this mean? I've managed to play House of the Dead 3 on the PC, the arcade version is more fun. Time Crisis 2 on the PS2, again using the gun is fun. Racing games, PC and arcade. I like the arcade version better. DrumMania and DDR, although I find both fun on either the PC or arcade, the arcade is better because I'm actuallying doing what the intended mode of play is rather than mashing buttons.

The interactivity of the Revolution controller may give people more of a reason to get it. But really, how will it not attract casual gamers?

3. The DS was supposed to revolutionize the portable market, but it didn't, therefore Revolution can't do anymore than the DS will.
Now who's fault is that? Is it Nintendo for attempting to try and make a product with a new feature that doesn't work? Or is the the software companies who can't find ways to make the new feature work? It's more convinient to have buttons do all the work than it is to program the "zillions" of possibilities of a touch screen.

The thing with the DS is that I believe the touch screen was only meant as a secondary feature, not a primary feature (why else does it have two more buttons than the GBA?). DS is meant primarily to be Nintendo's 3D portable system. The thing with two screens is that, well the DS has a horrible 3D resolution: 256x192, while PSP has the bare minimum for acceptable 3D resolution 480x272. Does this mean Nintendo sucks because it's stuck with a bad resolution for 3D? No. Would you like to spend another $100 for a higher resolution display? Thought not. My point is with the two screens, the second screen alleviates pretty much all the clutter. If you were to play Final Fantasy III on one screen with the DS, a fight scene would look horrible because the status of your people (where name and HP is shown) would take up half the screen, easy. Sure you'd have to focus on the second screen and avoid the action, but we do that anyway. Need For Speed for example. If I take my eyes off the road to look at the map or the ranking charts at the wrong time, I could wind up in a nasty accident, yet it's on the same screen.

Anyway, the thing is, it's not that developers won't support the console with the features provided for the most part. I believe it's because software developers are too lazy and complacent to take advantage of the features to really make the most out of things. An editor's comment on Maximum PC says that multi-core processors are way ahead of their time because software developers haven't caught on to multi-core programming. Some programs will actually run slower because it freaks out over two cores.

4. The attachment idea is just a hint that Ninendo will force us to buy useless accessories to play games.
Nintendo is a veteran gaming company. Like it or not, they revolutionized console gaming from since the 80's. If it wasn't for them, Playstation and XBox would've probably never existed and we'd be stuck playing Solataire and Minesweeper for fun. With that notion, I would find it stupid if Nintendo would do this. Sure they had projects and hardware that failed, but again, this wasn't an integral part of playing the game, they were all optional.

First of all, there's only one attachment announced, the analog stick with two extra buttons. They only said that there could be room for more if necessary. Also, as much as any hardcore PS or XBox would like to think that Nintendo doesn't care as much for their consumers as their respective companies do, Nintendo has said they are keeping the traditional games in mind. Not to mention there are plugs for GameCube controller ports. Do you really expect Nintendo to say the console is backwards compatible if all they're going to use is the remote?

On a side note, how many of these "useless" attachments did you need? None. >1% of the N64 and GCN library require some accessory as an integral part of gameplay, but again, you don't have to buy these things.

5. The idea of a remote control as a controller is absurd.
Is it? First time gamers I remember with me and my mom and even my dad when he started playing Call of Duty on the PC, had to look down on the controller every so often to make sure they were pressing the right button. Now how many people know exactly where to press on their remote? If most of us have watched TV for at least a few years with a remote, and most designs are similar, we can probably pick up any and manipulate the TV as we want with no problem.

This is the idea of the Revolution controller's design. The primary factor of it is, it's to have a design a majority of people are familiar with and who won't be intimidated by it. What's easier to manage? A D-Pad with two buttons and motions with your arms, or a count of 16 buttons with two joysticks? To us gamers that have played for years, a 16 button two joystick controller should be no sweat, but to a person who is new, this might be intimidating.

The second idea behind the Revolution Controller's design is that offers one thing many haven't been able to do for two decades: one handed controlling. Up until now, most games have been played with two hands, but this? One hand? At least now I can multitask better. It sucks to play Halo while on the cell phone (which why the heck are you doing that anyway?). Again you might refute this effectiveness because it'll cap gameplay.

I feel that most gamers think this change is going to be Nintendo's downfall because it's deviating way too much off traditional gameplay. Most of the arguments against the design of the controller are just people too used to the two handed controller and think that's the way it should be. But guess what? I find this a refreshing change from the boring style this is becoming. It's still effective, but having played games since first grade, I'd like something new.

DoomReign: i'll eat your children
surferkiddo: ill eat your girlfriend
DoomReign: *blocks you*

I grew up on the crime side, the New York Times side
Staying alive was no jive
At second hands, moms bounced on old men
So then we moved to Shaolin land
A young youth, yo rockin the gold tooth, 'Lo goose
Only way, I begin to gee off was drug loot
And let's start it like this son, rollin with this one
And that one, pullin out gats for fun
But it was just a dream for the teen, who was a fiend
Started smokin woolies at sixteen
And running up in gates, and doing hits for high stakes
Making my way on fire escapes
No question I would speed, for cracks and weed
The combination made my eyes bleed
No question I would flow off, and try to get the dough all
Sticking up white boys in ball courts
My life got no better, same damn 'Lo sweater
Times is ruff and tuff like leather
Figured out I went the wrong route
So I got with a sick ass click and went all out
Catchin keys from across seas
Rollin in MPV's, every week we made forty G's
Yo nigga respect mine, or anger the tech nine
Ch-chick-POW! Move from the gate now

[Chorus: Method Man]

Cash, Rules, Everything, Around, Me
C.R.E.A.M.
Get the money
Dollar, dollar bill y'all

[Verse Two: Inspector Deck]

It's been twenty-two long hard years of still strugglin
Survival got me buggin, but I'm alive on arrival
I peep at the shape of the streets
And stay awake to the ways of the world cause shit is deep
A man with a dream with plans to make C.R.E.A.M.
Which failed; I went to jail at the age of 15
A young buck sellin drugs and such who never had much
Trying to get a clutch at what I could not... could not...
The court played me short, now I face incarceration
Pacin -- going up state's my destination
Handcuffed in back of a bus, forty of us
Life as a shorty shouldn't be so ruff
But as the world turns I learned life is hell
Living in the world no different from a cell
Everyday I escape from Jakes givin chase, sellin base
Smokin bones in the staircase
Though I don't know why I chose to smoke sess
I guess that's the time when I'm not depressed
But I'm still depressed, and I ask what's it worth?
Ready to give up so I seek the Old Earth
Who explained working hard may help you maintain
to learn to overcome the heartaches and pain
We got stickup kids, corrupt cops, and crack rocks
and stray shots, all on the block that stays hot
Leave it up to me while I be living proof
To kick the truth to the young black youth
But shorty's running wild smokin sess drinkin beer
And ain't trying to hear what I'm kickin in his ear
Neglected, but now, but yo, it gots to be accepted
That what? That life is hectic...
