The 'Advance' ones were the only newer ones I liked. Why? It actually felt much more tolerable. Voices? No? Thank god.

Perhaps Sonic has gone downhill because of their:
- Crappy storyline
- Crappy engine
- Their idea of 'guns make all games better' (i.e. Shadow the Hedgehog
- Crappy sport game

Worst games I ever played. WORST.

But nothing compares to Sonic 2006. In fact, I think they crapped it out, ate it, and crapped it out again. A rating of 47.2%? Hahaha...

Across thirty-two reviews, Game Rankings recorded the average score of the Xbox 360 version as 47.2%; the second poorest average at the time for the system. Sales were also lower than expected for a premier Sonic title, with only 38,000 units being sold in the first two weeks.

I do think they managed to fuck that up.

I am cute, but that's a matter of opinion. I hate it when people call it Sonic Wii. Call it by it's real name Sonic and The Secret Rings. Or S&TSR for short.

As Kai said, it is more of Mystery Dungeon game, and what's fun? If you played the game you'd know, its the storyline mixed with the exploreing kind of game play that makes it fun.

As for the Sonic's Wii thing, you aren't cute nor funny, stop.

I'd just like to share something re: this collection with you.

You have the games, and a bit of info about them, museums, fun factoids about them, what have you. My personal favorite factoid was this one re: Phantasy Star IV:

"When Phantasy Star IV came out, it retailed for nearly $100US. Think about the price of this collection. You're welcome."

That's right. One hundred dollars. Think about that before you go complaining about how today's games are "omg so expensive wtf".

EDIT: Fun anecdote for you: When Chrono Trigger came out, my cousin, then working your typical minimum-wage-or-slightly-above teenage job, got a paycheck that he and I both thought was huge. Seriously, he was rich. We were awed that with that paycheck, he purchased PSIV (As mentioned above, $100) AND Chrono Trigger ($80), and had money left over.

Ah, for the simpler times.

Well the thing is, the Pokemon Mysterious Dungeon games were Mysterious Dungeon games, not Pokemon games. Not any more than Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon was a Final Fantasy game.

Not that they were bad or anything. They just weren't Pokemon games. Pokemon-themed, sure, but..

Shyguy: What are you TALKING about Pokemon has released some poor games lately? Diamond and Pearl were the top-selling Pokemon titles of ALL TIME in Japan, the Mystery Dungeon line was fun to an astounding degree (and an incredibly nice change of pace), and...well, really, do you know what you're talking about?

Anyways, to not get off-topic, alright. I mean, the Sonic Wii, I' sure auntie will end up picking it up at one point or another, and I'm sure even if it is horrible it'll see some play itme at our house. But as open as I am to giving companies chances to redeem themselves....Sega has to blow my mind with this one ._.;

Whether a game's this gen or last or even before doesn't make or break what a game is, you're right. I still play Killer Instinct but want to get into any decent fighter game, let's say. There are a ton of 'this-gen' games I'd love to get my hands on because they do look good and they do look like there's been time put into them.

Whether the industry has changed to fit the needs of the average consumer, however, doesn't excuse the fact of a used-to-be quality company such as Sega to release crap like Sonic Genesis. To release games just because they know they'll sell under the 'Sonic' logo is sad to say the least. What people used to do WAY BACK WHEN a GOOD AMOUNT of the time was actually bust their ass to make decent games. There's a reason the SNES was voted greatest console of all time via G4, for instance. Not saying that's the end all be all of polls but that shows that a good amount of consumers feel that a lot of good games and good ideas were put forth in that era.

Hell, at least with Sonic Mega Collections + on the PS2 I didn't feel like I was cheated out of 20 bucks even if the games weren't 100%. It's still 20 games with unlocks and they're pretty good emulated versions of the games. Now THAT'S how you do it. Not this crap on the GBA.

If Sega continued on with that consistency, they'd stay alive forever...but with this past year it just seems they're ready to cave in any day now.

Video game quality isn't declining.

A combination of CHANGING styles, INCREASING BUDGETS, AND DIFFERENT TECHNOLOGIES are making it so that video games AREN'T what they were like 10 years ago. The INDUSTRY is different at so many levels and people like us aren't the necessary target audience anymore. I love Metal Slug and Guilty Gear and Jojo's Bizarre Adventure as much as the next person. But shrill, baseless, and overly subjective opinions treated as fact help no one.

Video game quality hasn't declined. Video game production has changed. There are still lots of old styled games. We play them, us few, but the general public doesn't want to. The games are different. Not bad.

It is like saying that movies have gotten worse on the whole since the 1940-1960 (which is my personal heyday of movie making). The styles have changed, and so too have the production processes. Many blockbuster movies really suck because they're targetted at general public audience (in the case of this board, most of you who won't sit around and watch art films and neo noir). That is my opinion. Movies haven't gotten worse. They've changed

Although S&TSR is marked as my next Wii acquisition. It just seems to horrorshow to pass up. However, I will wait a bit to pass full judgement. I just realy want to see a Nintendo or Sega produced RTS that really takes the full promise of the Wii to the till.

Well the viscosity of how much "harder" it is for sonic's team people or not is a matter of mere opinion. It's like drawing and spriting skills. Sometimes you're good, sometimes you're not. I'm definately thinking S&TSR will be a redeeming point. I like sonic's speed. And they're promising to show very good effects that simulate his speed realistically.

That and the fact that it uses the wiimote rocks on too. Give Sonic a fighting chance at least for S&TSR. Sure Sonic Genesis was a complete crying lamentable shame, but how many games out there are? Personally I think popular Pokemon has released some really sad games recently. Why give the Blue Blur all the boo's and hisses?

What I'm getting at is that some games might not live to our expectations, and that's alright. Video games are declining anyway. And BELIEVE YOU ME. Next time I hear Sonic say "nice smile" I'm going to snap. Yet, it's Sonic anyway. Give him a chance and maybe he'll be that Deli Style Hedgehog you remember.

In conclusion, I type way too much, yet my point is that you'd have to dig through some of the BETTER recent Sonic games and kiss them all over. Don't pay attention to some of the engrish and crud like camera angles and the sort.

Lol. You said "Sonic Wii".

Sonic and the Secret Rings is supposed to be completely speed based, I heard. Like... They're making it so that it makes realistic aftereffects and the like due to Sonic's speed. They're tryuing to simulate speed as good as NiGHTS simulates flight, they said.

So "Sonic's Wii" might not be so bad, really. >.>

Marble zone is probably the most boring song I ever heard in a Sonic game. Not that I diss the music in the Sonic games, I love the metropolis theme. <3 And the Scrap brain theme from the first game is good as well.

Remember, I hadn't played Sonic CD nor any modern Sonic games after that, expect for that robot blast fangame... but that doesn't count.

I fucking love Sonic Adventure 1 and 2. I don't care what anyone says, they are not that bad of games. I've gotten all emblems in each and I know my stuff about them. Those and Sonic Advance 1 and 2 were the last good games. I own 3, but I can't play through it all the way...It's just not that good.

I of course love the originals (1,2,3+K), and Heroes wasn't that bad, but it could have been better (A few annoying parts, alot of EASY parts). Sonic Rush was great, but was way too short.

I just recently booted up my legal copy of Sonic CD with the WinXP patch and played through the first three levels and noticed some things.
1) You were slowed down alot. Stopping to get speed to warp through time and such? It's all a big time waster in a game that's supposed to be about speed.
2) The music is terrible. I know it's the USA soundtrack and the JPN one is probably better (I haven't heard it in years so I forget), but it's this kind of music that is killing Sonic even to this day. It's meshed together instrument loops with no melody at all! I can hum or SING almost every Sonic song from the originals because they have a chorus and melody that is memorable. Sonic CD's has none of that. Right now, hum Marble Garden or Hydrocity. It's totally possible and it's good stuff right? It's memorable. Try to hum anything from Sonic CD. Not possible because of two reasons.
1) The music has no melody or chorus.
2) It doesn't stick in your head because of number one.

You can say the same for a few of the songs in Sonic Adventure 1 or 2, but they mostly have something you can remember like lyrics. So the music in Sonic CD is when it started to go down the shitter for Sonic music.

Good music is a big part of a good game, but there's other things! Gameplay is always touched upon, but do we really know what good Sonic gameplay was? I think about it and I can't figure out what it was that made Sonic so fun to play over and over. The only thing I can think of is the level layout, but good layout is really only possible when done in 2D form. 3D kills Sonic layouts, no matter what.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. If they just took Sonic 3 + Knuckles, made it all 3D but a 2D sidescroller, and released it on a big system and not a handheld, it would be a big money bringer for Sega. They would of course have to keep the same physics and object sizes, or that right there ruins the game!

That leads to the next problem. Noone wants to see Sonic up close, they don't care if he's as small as a flea, noone wants to play a game where the camera focuses on Sonic way too much. Think about it, if Sonic 3 had a spritees that were 2 times bigger and ate up most of the screen, would you enjoy it?

No.

Maybe Sega should just stick to 2D until they get back on foot and get some people on staff that actually know and love Sonic for what it is and not for money. They need to make music thats good and fits their level themes, and is simple and not all guitar samples and vocals. They need to fix their gameplay by making it focus on speed and not on Sonic and his 30+ new moves and friends and shitty storyline.

BUT WAIT!
Sonic 3 had a storyline! Remember? Sonic gets stopped by Knuckles, Knuckles takes Sonics emeralds, Sonic is like WTF and goes to find out why he stole them/catch Knuckles. Sonic runs into a robot and it burns the shit outta the forest, he then runs into Robotnik and fights him. Then, Knuckles presses a button after chuckling shortly and drops Sonic to Hydrocity! He finds Knuckles again, and once more is sent downwards via button press to fight Robotnik, making it clear that Knuckles is on Robotniks side! But wait! Later on in the game, Sonic fights Knuckles, and Robotnik is seen taking the Master Emerald! Knuckles is goes WTF and tries to stop him, but can't and makes friends with Sonic and then helps him get to Sky Sanctuary to stop Robotnik. Even more storyline takes place, and then the game is over with Sonic Tails and Knuckles friends and Robotnik supposedly defeated for the last time.

How was all this done? Through pre-rendered cutscenes and dialog? Through text boxes? All through the manual?
No. All through actions. No speech, no text, no anything.
But how can a game with none of that have a good storyline?! Well, Sonic 3 proves it. Sega needs to learn from their old games and realize that we don't want it the new way, we want it the old way.

I'm giving Sega about 2 more years to fix what they have broken and if nothing good comes from them...I may never buy or play a Sonic game again...And this is coming from the kid who has played Sonic since he was 3, owns almost ever game, has posters/action figures/music CDs and many other forms of Sonic in material form.

Sega please. Fix your act now. Maybe a Sega executive will see these posts and realize their mistakes... and maybe Sonic Genesis is good
