Meh, I haven't yet seen one where it bothered me.

Which tends to interfere with most decent layouts.

Last I checked dashes was the default.

It's an option that can be set to "None", though.

Yes, and if you don't like it that way, it can also be not set to "None".

Plain text can be often manipulated into getting confused with a post. It's different if it's part of a layout where it's clearly placed. Some people just stuff stupid comments like "hi, im *insert username here*" where the post would example like: "hi, im *username*i think thats good"

So you get a picture. But sometimes the signatures get the same fate, where people either stick a load of crap there, or someone confuses it with a post.

Dashes (2346)
Line (41)
Full horizontal line (83)
None (100)

"--------------------" still seems to be the default one, but I use the least common (or would if I had layouts enabled) ... and the option is down there because it's just a viewing option that doesn't affect your post layout

But the whole point of this option was exactly the problem we have here ... I remember seeing plain text signatures on older boards that had no separator, and it did get confusing at times ...

I'd go with a font tag or something to separate plain text signatures, putting a separator in there doesn't look as good when there's already one

In glancing at editprofile.php, though, said option appears to default to 'none', and it's buried in the middle of all the other miscellaneous options instead of up with the signature itself.

All we're asking for is a little bit of seperation. as much as a "---", or a bold or color tag, to show that your post has ended and your signature has begun.

On the same subject, here's an idea (that I'm sure will get shot down quickly, but what's the harm in trying?): Why not a little notice in "Edit Profile" that says "NO PLAIN-TEXT SIGNATURES" (or something like that), like with the Header? (That one says "DO NOT PUT TEXT HERE." in big, bold, red text.) That way, people will know NOT to put plaintext there. Though, I'm confused now. Is it that plain-text sigs are banned no matter what, or that they're okay as long as it's easy to tell where the post itself is and where the post ends and signature begins? There's a big difference between:

Blah blah blah blah blah.

Blah blah blah, blah.
and

Blah blah blah blah blah.

Blah blah blah, blah.

One of those is clearly a signature, the other isn't clear at all. That's what we're looking for here.

I understand that text headers got annoying (anyone who's been here for 3+ years knows that), but why sigs?

images in sigs, and full post layouts, take more bandwidth than, say a link saying visit my forum/blog/etc.
I know that with aboard, a big plus is customizable layouts in posts, but it is still a forum tradition to have basic text/image signatures.

did something happen to deny users this? New host rules/requirements? Or just l33t staff attitudes towards text?

I don't mean to offend any staff members here by asking, I just cannot fathom why it's such a big deal.

This board really has changed over the years... Acmlm has basically disappeared from the public eye, ads were added to the fourm, and now no text sigs/headers. wow.
Plain text sigs blend in too much to the actual post, leading to confusion and annoyance, just like headers. It's basically been decided by a lot of board users who got fed up with it.

Basic image signatures are still fine, as long as you don't do anything stupid like make a 800x600 image into your signature (hi, Dr_Ice64)...

Acmlm's still around, he's just not on the board as much (we're talking to him right now even), the ads were added to pay for hosting and to pay for future expansion (like a project I'm working on), and the banning of plaintext sigs is nothing new at all.

Just as Kail already said, they're annoying for the same reason as plain-text headers; and 90% of the time this is due to a lack of separation between those and the actual post.

Nobody is complaining about bandwidth, if Xkeeper told us that we needed to cut down on bandwidth by removing layouts, we'd do it. But there's no such thing going on, so your point is moot. Plain-text signatures are usually half intelligent (links to personal forums, etc.) and half idiotic (random phrases and statements that have no relevance to anything at all.) so while they are "tradition", they're not important, nor even good in most cases.

No, people (especially admin.) got tired of trying to pick out what is a post and what is the plain text header/footer in posts by certain users. Therefore, they wanted such practices to be looked down upon. I don't see what's wrong with supporting clarity in posts.

Frankly, nobody really cared before and nor will they care after, because it isn't a big deal. Just keeping clarity in posts is the whole point, and most people are able to do that with their headers/footers.

Okay. Well, Acmlm is around, so you lose on that point. The ads are necessary, if you understand the concept of hosting, you should know that money is needed to support the board in this respect. Go cry about them somewhere else, because they're not terrible ads at all.

We don't expect people to be perfect. We expect them to read the rules and display a shred of common sense.

Because no one's ever made a good one.

Show me a good layout with ASCII art.

Ace is still around, if you know where to look.

The ads are there to pay for the server's host, same with just about any other site.

And the primary issue is people not putting in visible separators for their signatures, so that they have a tendency to blend together with the rest of the post. Which is extremely annoying.
