But how much work do you have to go through to get that custom firmware?

Not as much as you might expect, actually. All it takes is some patience, some confidence, and a USB cable. If you have all that, and are able to follow instructions, you won't screw anything up (of course, they have to be proper instructions).

Keep in mind that there are good games on the PSP - its entertainment value is not strictly limited to homebrew and emulation.

And who says you can't have both a DS and a PSP? Your bank balance, maybe, but both are good systems that are worth having.

But, that was a good year or two ago. I'd imagine the emulators have gotten better?

You bet your fucking ass it has. With the latest custom firmware, you are able to play PSX ISOs on your PSP, with little to no problems. You have games like GTA, MGS, and Monster Hunter PSP. You a slew of emulators for various consoles, as well as homebrew programs. And eventually, you'll get games like the Final Fantasy Tactics remake. I still don't understand what many people have against the PSP. It's a good system - if you're open minded. In a community so biased for Nintendo, though, my words are probably just falling on deaf ears.

Cool. I'm also reminded that they're even going to have some official "Play PSX games on your PSP" going around in some time.

Regardless, I can just simply say I personally am not too big on handheld gaming. I just recently picked up my DS to play Portrait of Ruin, beat it in 7 hours, and now it sits again. Its okay to have handhelds on the road ... but I have a busy enough schedule as it is, and I have never found myself saying "okay I'm going on vacation, gotta pack my PSP/DS".

I really have no idea where I'm going with this, so I guess you can all just say I'm biased for being more of a console gamer. But yeah,

A whole bunch of great games are coming out, and it is a pretty damned good system.

Lost Planet comes out so soon!

Not to mention it's still far more expensive (plus you have to get a memstick duo) than a DS is at the start...

Well, my parents already had a 2gb memorystick duo for their stills camera. I just swapped my 32mb free PSP one around with it.

They never noticed.

And it took not much time to downgrade the PSP, but it was pretty sketchy. One bad move, and it would have been screwed up for good. Luckily everything went alright though.

So basically, it cost me £150 for a console that lets me play homebrew including MP3 players, a DIVX player, a near-perfect GBA emulator and an internet radio program.

Not too bad. Keeps me entertained at school and on long train journeys anyway. I think I have something like 20 albums on there right now, 30 gba games (took a load off) and a few DIVX films I ripped from my DVDs (Die Hard, Clockwork Orange).

Dont forget the full speed GBA emulator coded from scratch for the PSP that is right now running better for me than VBA is on my computer.

Seriously, it's pretty fucking amazing. I've got over 200 GBA games on my memory stick, and apart from a very select few (yoshi's island), they all run flawlessly at full speed with no frameskip in full-screen mode with interpolation.

Amazing.

Edit - actually, I'll upload a video. Just for the hell of it.

Get broadband, get the 360 Premium, get Live. It does rock, and there's just about no excuse NOT to have broadband.

Or you could hack the box and play emulators for just about everything on it. Is there a PSP emu for X360 yet?

I don't want a Premium because:
1. i dont have broadband, so XBOX live is point less
2. i dont really need a hard drive for it ( i have the original XBOX for that purpose.)

I don't know, I just believe my PSP was probably the biggest financial waste I've seen on my part. Its collected dust for the last few years.

I only use it for the homebrew right now (emulators, mostly) so ... yeap.

Of course, last time I used it was in July, so...

Xbox 360 ftw by comparison. (Although the PSP is a good storage device)

No we can't fix it.

And personally, I'd suggest an Xbox 360. I have neither, but I've found that I play home consoles more than portable systems, and that holds true for quite a few people I've known.

Oh, wait, the CORE system? Eesh.

... still better than PSP from what I've seen.
