One of the issues with the Wii's online capability I've noticed with Wifi is that it's pretty sensitive to outside signals. I've had a wifi network for a while now and noticed that on occassion, connections would be lost and stuff. When I connected the Wii, I noticed sometimes connecting to the shop channel would take a very long time and then I would get an error. It happened a lot more frequently, though. So I switched to channel 11 on my router and things started running more smoothly.

Ah, well that's different then. Still probably a lot of downloads at once though.

Anyone know what wireless hardware the Wii uses? The DS intentionally used really slow hardware so it could be cheaper because they never intended to do anything that would need a higher speed. Maybe they did that with Wii too, even though they included a browser this time.

You only download when you say to download, though.

Depends on the size of the farm. Nintendo has money but they aren't swimming in it like Microsoft. According to NexGenWars there have been 1,792,196 Wii consoles sold to date. Since they're online 24/7 that means they probably all download the updates around the same time. That's nearly two million downloads plus the traffic generated by their web sites and online games.

Nintendo have the money, but I guess they might not choose to use them.

Seriously, server farms aren't really that expensive for a medium company. Nintendo is a huge company. It's not like they have shrunk since their early 90's heyday.

heh, will I learnt a while back if you want a console at launch you pre-order months in advance.

Update finished and I have a orange rather than red standby light.

Looking at these online channels; Mario64 will cost me £7 (13.7067 US$) - and it's licence so I wouldn't own it.

The News channel will not be online until 27th January with the forecast channel starting on the 20th.

Back to Zelda I guess.

Who are you kidding? Nintendo have money. There is also the fact that it's late Sunday evening here and no-one is in online with their Mii's make me worry what it will be like when it's prime time. My guess is that I'm connecting to a server in the US and not in Europe.

The fact you have one is technically outweighing the fact the Wii is normally very slow to download things.

Ok so I just got my wireless setup to get my Wii online. As soon as I configure the Wii with the LAN details it took about 15mins downloading an update told me I now have an anti screen burn option (woop!) and that it will start downloading another update and Wii channel setting. It's still going as I post this and I was wondering if anyone knew what the hell it was downloading that's so big? Or is just the connection being slow? I’m tempted to install Ethereal and start to snoop the packets as all you see in the TV is a status bar and no speed rate or size of download - but that might be a bit OTT.
