That's not really a fair criticism. Everyone lives shiny. |

Originally posted by Colin And I quote, that TIME bases its Person of the Year on who, "for better or worse, has most influenced events in the preceding year." I think it's just a cheap attempt at grabbing the interest of the people: "Whoa, I, and some famous person, am the winner!" [EDIT] Not to mention the cover is shiny. And we know how much the Time-magazine buyers love shiny. |

It's not just about "threats to America". It's about the big trends and news stories. Iran and nukes are nothing new, but Chavez has become emblematic of a widespread new leftish swing in Latin America generally, and reportage on the fates of Chavez-type politicians throughout Latin America have been a significant news issue all year. It's one of the bigger stories in the world.
The other possibility is either Al Gore or that Stern guy from the UK treasury, because the global warming debate has been one of the biggest issues of the year too. |

Ahmadinejad's the one with the nuclear power intentions and the one who's been stirring up the controversy. Chavez... just hates Bush. (Yeah, I know there's more to it than that but Chavez really isn't a threat. More a thorn in one's side.) |

I put it on my resume. |

Why not Hugo Chavez? |

It's a pick that's out of the box but it isn't a bad pick. Shows you how terms like Youtube and Wikipedia are becoming part of our culture.
Apparently if "You" wasn't picked, the choice would have been Mahmoud Ahmadinejad - and that definitely feels a little off as Time stated. |

Originally posted by Alastor Well, I dunno. Good Morning America's redid the 7 Wonders of the World, making the Internet one of the new wonders. Still, making you the person of the year with honorable mentions for your MySpace and Youtube contributions? Umm... All credibility for anything related to similar topics has been lost and will never be found again by me. Go on with your dumbass theories where everyone wins, I'm going to think rationally about this stuff. I'm going to research people who have changed the world without being lazy and just naming everyone because I want to gain money with little work. |

Yeah, sounds like someone just got lazy... |

Makes perfect sense to me. DIY culture is growing with the expansion of things such as blogs, wikis, and podcasts. The internet is basically opening the door to amateurism being the leading thing, and I'm pretty sure this is what TIME is trying to say with this. Need I remind you all that both "The Computer" and "The Endangered Earth" has been "Person of the Year" before? Likewise, large groups of people have been Person of the Year as well, such as The American Soldier and the Hungarian Freedom Fighter. |

This. Now, this... This is stupid. |

Well, Time's just consigned a decades-old tradition to utter irrelevance. |

Interesting. That's different, but it makes sense. User-generated content is a bit of a misnomer, everything is generated by users, just users in different senses of the word |
