And maybe add in a little footnote about how the last person to talk like that got banned or something. (and I don't mean BMF)

Another Rule: Just because you go approval doesn't mean you can go hog wild. It can still be REVOKED.

Perhaps a good way to make sure people read the FAQs before they can post is a good idea? A lot of forums have this problem- Some people are just so spoiled, they think they can do whatever they want and get away with it without getting in trouble or anyone caring. Hmph. Oh, and if it isn't in the FAQs, perhaps a notice of Flash Ads and breaking the tables with them (I haven't read them in a few weeks, so I'm not sure if it's there or not, but rest assured, I HAVE read the FAQs. I read them on every board I go to, so I know what I should and shouldn't do.).

Ok, so what about ESL kids? How about them? I know many people who use the "AOL Speak" terminology even in their writing at school, but they cannot help themselves because it makes more sense to say "ur" than "You're". In their languages, such words are not as complicated, it's spelled with as little letters as needed.

EDIT: Yeah, I didn't see that little part in Thexare's post regarding foreign people. However, my point remains that it should be in the FAQ.

See also Ailure.

He had a poor grasp of English but he could at least manage to type out things.

Rule 3.14: Beware the Metal Man. He craves human flesh.

And now, for a real suggestion.

Rule ?@?!: Respect other members when you post--they might actually return the favor to you.

Actually, students of a foreign language tend to communicate *better* than those who're native to it.

For example, I can type out fairly coherent sentences in French, but the French version of AOL-speak boggles my mind.

For example, they take c'est and just type "c", which is horribly confusing 'cause half the time it looks like they just accidentally typed the letter c.

Maybe instructions on how to make the kind of links that show just the words, like this one? I often forget.

AOL speak to me isn't about somebody's ability to spell -- it's a time / laziness thing. And sure, it might be appropriate in some contexts. I don't think the forum is one of those though.

I'm pretty sure people are still taught in school how to spell and write properly, well enough to communicate on a web forum.

Bullshit. I don't think I even have to say why this is bullshit, but I will anyway.

We're asking people to correctly use the language that they've been using most of their life (note: we go easy on non-native speakers). We're not even asking for perfect grammar, we just don't like people who can't take a few seconds to fully type out their words or construct a readable sentence. That's not the equivalent of saying every autistic person can learn to speak another language, and I don't know what the hell you were on when you came up with the idea that it was.

Even a bad mastery of English is no excuse for typing things like "ur smrt".

I think the FAQ should have information on how to use attachments. Also, some rules that should be added or updated:

- Making birthday threads of banned/permabanned users is not allowed.
- Bumping threads is not allowed unless you're the one who created that thread and you're updating or adding meaningful information.
- You can double post in a thread if no one has replied to it in more than 24 hours.
- Don't expect rom hacking to be easy.
This is a long thread. Click here to view it.
