I don't know, sorry, but...
I had the same problem ("OPERATING SYSTEM NOT FOUND") a while ago; my only solution was to eventually replace the HDD. I'd just look into saving up for a new one (they aren't that expensive anymore), and utilize one of the times it works to make a boot CD with a partition copier and some other disk tools, then just run it when it reconizes the HDD and copy it all over. |

The hard drive has mysteriously started working again- however, I have no idea for how long, since it's done this before.
Thankfully, the password is now gone- fooling with the battery solved that. Which of those would be most likely to cause sporadic working/non-working behavior? |

The motherboard will almost certainly have a jumper or switch you can use (or battery you can remove) to clear the settings and password. After that, try testing/replacing these things in order:
Bad drive cables are obviously a likely cause of disk problems and the easiest/cheapest to fix. Hard drives also tend to die a lot faster than other parts since they're mechanical. Power issues or defective RAM can also cause tons of weeeeird problems (bad RAM was making my HD/CD-ROM fail just recently). |

Alright, I've been having some large-scale problems with my computer (a Compaq Deskpro EN) for the past few days.
At first, it was small- basically, the computer would not recognize the hard drive, and then after a restart it would. Then, it became harder, it took several tries to recognize the drive. Now, however, it has grown worse. It will not recognize the drive at all, and an attempt to copy working settings from a working Compaq computer has made it even worse than before- the Setup now demands a password. The computer the settings were copyed from did not use a password, however, now I can not save anything in the setup. Help! |
