Edit: Wait with the level select that's not even the same... Oh my god I am so fucking inattentive hah Edit: Ooooh. It's the Marble zone theme. That explains me not quite understanding that it wasn't from sonic 2, because it just wasn't what I remembered at all... Edit: What the fuck marble, I mean starlight Edit: Further analysis indicates they put these on top of starlight zone actually, ha ha, I need to pay some attention, really any amount at all would be better than what I have now |

I think they just didn't know what to do with it.
It's a shame that it's gone, hell there's a section of that level that seemed to use a scrolling trick that makes the level seem to be higher than it actually is. Well technically it never used that trick but it was obviously planned in. |

I still don't understand why the hidden palace zone wasn't in the finished game. I mean if it was allready done this early. |

No, really, I haven't played Sonic 1 or Sonic 2 in years. I thought the music for act 3 was the Sonic 1 music |

Garbled mess that moves around and makes funny sounds (or rather, sounds that wouldn't fit a boss), though it's probably fully working apart from that... I hadn't tried interacting with the boss itself. XD |

I can never understand if Alastor is being sarcastic or not...
What does that leftover boss look like? Anything worth checking out? |

nOriginally posted by Alastor the Stylish Actually, Sonic 2 was based off of Sonic 1, not an entirely new program- the music is all Sonic 1, the engine still has many traces of Sonic 1 as well. I would say that it is a prototype. |

More stuff from s2beta page...
DRX, the finder of the proto, found the remains of the chemical plant zone boss (spring yard in the proto for those of you don't know). here's the save state. http://www.hacking-cult.org/html/upload/1163286229.rar In other news, there are some more codes (game genie/ action replay whatever!). first we have some left over sonic 1 title cards. 00B99A:4E71 00B9AC:4E71 00B9DA:4E71 Also, we can now veiw the extra badniks in debug mode in Hidden Palace without them seeming corrupted. 01C1D8:0007 some other things are corrupted but the badniks are amazing. take a look. There's one more thing too. If you play labrynth zone and exit through the debug mode exit (start-A while in debug mode), play marble zone (cpz) and exit through debug again, go back to labrynth. You should have a more playable level... don't know why but it works. |

That was in the other prototype, too. It's not a bad animation. |

Is it just me, or do Sonic's legs make a swirl patturn when he runs at top speed. I don't remember seeing that in the final. |

I'm suddenly reminded of pirates who tends to remove the copyright notice from the games. Like that would help... |

Well, a simple google search should suffice I guess. I didn't notice the Sega copyright at the bottom, so I suppose it is illegal... |

Isn't it enough to just remove the link?
Discussing about the beta itself should be fine. |

It's not up to Sega to care. The bottom line is that the ROM contains copyrighted code and trademarked characters. The Sega trademark at the beginning alone is enough to make this ROM OFF LIMITS. Unless the game is HOMEBREW (which this is clearly not) it is NOT PERMITTED. PERIOD. |

I'm sure Sega wouldn't care about something like this, and it's not like its a licensed game or anything...
Anyways, yea I found some neat glitches and such, but something that really is weird, is run and skid off a hill and you will get a weird animation that seems to look new (like, never found in the beta/release rom). I think the wall hit is kind of cool, but it does get annoying, and fast I would consider it a prototype, because if you discard the fact that it is built off of Sonic 1's engine, then you get almost nothing but Sonic 2's first level with no physics (it seems to me that it uses Sonic 1's physics, because it is alot smoother then Sonic 2's release physics...(and by physics I mean how you jump/animate/move/camera scrolls)) This pretty much ends the Sonic 2 digging saga... After this, theres almost nothing else needed to know. They've solved the Dust Hill Zone story, the Genocide City story, the "time travel", and pretty much everything else! With the proto, we learned that it was built from Sonic 1, and at one time had the "wall hit" feature. We've basically learned everything needed to know! It's amazing how picked clean it is I'm guessing next will be Sonic 3, as that diserves some fine combing... Perhaps a beta of it could be found? (Unless there already is one...) |

Ailure, this isn't early in development at all. Also, this isn't a prototype - prototypes are extremely early. It having functional levels and music means it's well past Alpha stage, too. This is most likely a prerelease demonstration, assuming Sega followed a development plan that even approached sane. |
