I'm late on this, but yeah.

Let me rephrase to be more accurate: On the quickest path through the game, the only non-warp pipe that gains you real-time speed is the one in 1-1 (I'm not sure about pipes that aren't in the eight levels required to beat the game). This is pretty much for the reason you mentioned; most other pipes don't warp you forward that much, and when you consider that the truly elite-level runner of the game basically holds B through the entire game, it's quicker to just run than take the pipes.

As a note, I first saw this on Google Video, with much more detailed comments (Both players have completed the game faster than is shown here, as you'd expect).

Yeah, I noticed that, I just checked, and it was the Mario disguised guy, it's obvious he slowed down on 8-1 and Luigi slowed down on 8-4... With the great advantage Mario had, he could even die and win (At the beginning of the level 8-1, at least - and then he wouldn't need to slow down like that, the most horrid thing was having problems collecting a useless coin).

The one on the right won, if you look closely the bridge on his screen dissapears first (and bowser gets to the lava first).

Heh, also if I did a similar speedrun and wanted to be safe... aka only one chanche I probably would try to collect powerups as early as possible. Aka taking the first mushroom then a flower on level 1-2. Won't get you the fastest time in tool-assisted runs... but it gives you room for mistakes, especially when you only have one chanche.

For entertainment. It's mostly noticable on world 8-1 when the right player turns around and loses time by shooting fireballs without reason (Other than to the other player to pass him and so the exciting changing leaders is possible).

I've seen so many very real looking hoaxes that I cannot tell when one is real or not - I just say, they were meant to end like that, watching someone beat someone else by a good margin isn't as entertaining.

It would only be a hoax if the control movements didn't match up to what was on the screen; and why would they go through all that trouble?

What about a hoax? They can have two prerecorded games ending like that and then they put them at the same time, or the players can practice a lot to achieve that regulary.

Because I strongly believe it was an exhibition, not a competition; why would the contestants be disguised as Mario and Luigi?

Yes, still cool *Goes to watch the video yet again*

Thing is, in an actual competion, there is no no tolerence for mistakes. You can't reset or anything - thus must avoid making mistakes to begin with.

Yeah, isn't shooting and killing Bowser with fireballs much faster than going towards him and becoming small?

No.

And yeah, an SMB speedrun fanatic will notice mistakes both unintentional and semi-"intentional" (The only pipe outside of warps that actually gains you real-time speed is the one in 1-1), presumably for the sake of the exhibition.

Still cool though.

I don't know about that... depends if it was an actual legit competition or an exhibition. I'd be focusing too much on my screen and not my opponent's.

I think they were messing up so the other player could catch up (That is, intentional mistakes only when you are winning), I think they wanted to finish the game at the same time and succeded.

I may be wrong, but who cares! The end is very exciting indeed!

I didn't time it, but I did manage to get a score of "133750" once

I need practice. Sped through the first couple of levels with no problem but then 8-1 and 8-2... I rushed too much.

Failed at 8-2 after 6'40 or so. Take away those deaths and I'd likely be on 8-4 at that time.

For me, its about 35 minutes to beat the game through every level. I did a speed run against my friends and I won with that.

Well, it was a hell of a legitimate speedrun by both people in any case.

Has anyone timed themselves in SMB? I'm considering doing so after by taking the fast route (1-1, 1-2, 4-1, 4-2, 8-1 through 8-4)

Yeah, they did some pretty obvious mistakes at part but did other parts where it's easy to do mistakes quite well so... and funny how they were quite even near the end despite the countless minor mistakes, such as letting the fireworks go off.

Kinda cool though, must be really fun to be in a such contest.

Aw. It's like the SMB3 contest in The Wizard.

How the hell do you repetedly fail to jump over the pipe in 8-1?

Now that's just badass. This is one of those times I actually enjoyed a run with warps - I typically have something against that kind of thing. The camera angle is bizarre though, and the cheering crowd is kind of annoying (Am I the only one who notices all such crowds sound the same? It always seems to have that one female with that EXACT tone (or very close to said tone going "WOOOO~")
