prolly. woudl take two DMA channels, and use of XOr/AND/OR/NOR logic or somethign, can't rmember the axact available settings for the hardware. |

Possibly a silly question... would complex shapes requiring gaps in the transparent area be possible if the format were modified to allow for it? Like, the hardware is capable of it? |

Yeah, I think a zoom editor would be so easy to make that I was going to make one with that data at one point. And I'm incredibly lazy.
It wasn't so easy that I actually went and did it, though. The project's all yours, Smallhacker. |

The address Glyph posted is for the bottom half of the circle zoom (the data is read in reverse to make the top half). The keyhole is stored upside-down immediately after, at $4D93. The format is really simple, one byte for each line that specifies the width of the transparent space. Unfortunately, this format doesn't allow for complex shapes, like stars, which would require a break in the transparent space.
I'm guessing a zoom editor would be incredibly easy to make... |

I always wondered how they did those anyway, do the have some kind of large 2bbp image/tilemap, some built in basic shapes system(that would keep them from having more advanced shapes? |

In theory, yes. It would be possible to do both (just changing the keyhole tile won't do anything but change the keyhole tile, though: the zoom-in shape is still a keyhle). However, the issue is actually doing it. It would take a while to implement something very trivial, and is not worth the time it would take. |

Is possible to change the shape for that effect? For example, Triangles, hearts, whatever.
Simmilar to the keyhole shape efect. If I change the keyhole tile, the shape changes too? I have not proved yet. |

modify effects... what about doing levels actually based on some of these effects? for example, when you complete al level, the "hole" follows Mario's position, this would be modied to make it stay in a certain size and use it thougt all the level to make like a dark cave where you can only see what's around Mario. |

Edit: found something interested, change x2167 to 00 to kill the blurry effect |

Isn't it the exact same effect, but reversed, that is used when you finish a level ? |

You know when you Boot the ROM, the intro movie plays, yes?
Before it, there's an effect. This effect, to be exact: Could it be possible to use the same effect somewhere else in the game? For SMB3 nostalgia, perhaps when a level is entered, it does that effect instead of the blur? Post your ideas and dicuss theories how this could be used here. |
