Isn't that how Ensata got leaked even though it's a pretty useless emulator?

I don't want to go into too much detail, but at one point apparently one of Nintendo's development teams had a very insecure FTP server with many dev tools publicly accessible, and game source codes in password-protected directores with passwords (dunno if they were for those directories) in publicly-accessible plain text files. They've fixed it since though.

Similarly Nintendo's own dev site, WarioWorld.com, once had a fatal flaw in its security: clicking Login without entering a username or password would get you in.

Eh, they say any publicity is good publicity. Zelda: OoT's popularity seems to have spiked since its debug version was leaked.

That's still a bad leak but it's better the soundtrack gets leaked than the actual game itself. :\ Lots of CD's are pirated a week or two before release as well.

Another thing which I'm not sure about how old it is: I believe the Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin soundtrack was leaked some time ago. The company managed to get it under control, but I'm sure there are still copies floating around private sites and people's hard drives. I don't know why other companies don't go other of the way to do something similar, or at least find out who does those kinds of things. Not that I'm complaining about the leaks, of course.

Without saying anything (because I'm not sure if I'm still under the NDA or not), I helped out in the beta-testing of a game that's coming out later this month for PC. Not a day after the beta started, someone leaked the beta onto torrent sites. Now, the beta itself couldn't be played because you needed to activate it with a code in order to access the game itself, but the fact is that the beta wasn't supposed to be leaked at all and the NDA made that crystal clear. The person had a couple of days to fess up and not face legal action, but didn't... so while that's going on, we were only given one build of the beta to mess around with instead of several as was planned. Not good at all.

Yeah, in the case of defcon it was actually a preview version too. :/ It's made by a small devoloper team so the leak wasn't internal.

It's even said that the Starfox2 beta that was spread around actually was compiled from the source directly and spread, hinting that it was someone internally at Nintendo doing it. And in the case of Diamond and Pearl it probably someone owning a retail shop spreading it, sometimes shops stock up on games before the release date or even release them a little bit early (I got my copy of WindWaker with Master quest a few days too early D

Sometimes they really can't control it, testers, pre-viewers, what-have-you get their hands on it and want to share it ;p. It could be as simple as some warez group having a member as a tester, or someone wanting a reputation, it doesn't suprise me really. If nothing else, it's publicity++;

Don't forget Defcon -- leaked debug copy 2+ days before release.

It's almost like companies WANT it to happen.

Sounds like a leak of a beta or the final code before the game went gold... maybe a review copy? Wouldn't be surprising at any rate since it IS FF.

Check out your favorite torrent website for the lowdown on this. It's a prerelease, and it runs slowly (mostly as a result of other issues), but is apparantly fully functional. At any rate, wow. Just. Wow. Some big name games and other things related have been getting leaked lately; first Pokemon Diamond and Pearl two days before their release, and now this. For some reason it seems a lot of things have been getting leaked lately.

Why do companies allow this to happen, anyhow? And just who does this sort of thing?
