Taryn: I meant when she was in a panic; were you talking to her in a calm and soothing manner or with a little bit of a... tone in your voice? XD

...I feel for you with that last one.

Ahh.... what is it with me and clients this week??

I just had THE call of like FOREVER

A woman deleted 171 files off the network from the Search function in Windows. The ONLY way to find out what the deleted files were was to VNC in, and write down the filenames and paths of all 171 of them to get the file restore request done.

Took me 1 hour, 20 minutes.

Speaking of horrible calls, I used to work customer service for Valero, a chain of gas stations. A gas-card holder called in with one simple question: "Where do I put the gas?"

I can do you one better.

I got a woman that called asking if we sell gas.

That is, last I checked, one of the primary requirements of being a gas station...

What the fuck...? Do people even use their brain anymore?

??

I think based on her initial description I just told her that it was the computer being stupid.

After all, she described (of course) the login box from the webpage perfectly, when I asked if she was going to the right URL she said she was (because the URL happens to be written on the blue box in the login screen; which is not where I told her to look, but nevermind....) etc. She was able to type in the address for Google where I WANTED her to look in the first place, "confirming" that she knew what the address bar was and so I thought she'd looked there before when I'd asked her to...

So I thought the computer perhaps COULD have been misbehaving itself in some way.

VNC showed otherwise -- a login box JPG -- badly compressed -- located top left of screen instead of center -- and a totally different URL.

Based upon the way she was describing the problem and the weird answering of the URL/ Address Bar issue I thought that perhaps it was an actual issue for a bit there.

Well, like I said, I think there was a fair bit of panic involved -- people don't slow down and think when they're in that state, they just kinda... panic and then call us.

Some users are quite panicky when it comes to... pretty much anything related to their computer actually. I find that I am constantly reassuring people that they haven't done anything terrible when they call me in a bit of a state...

The client was blaming themselves for the JPG incident -- in that they thought it was happening because they'd missed the "deadline" and that it was a punishment of some sort.

...was there even a deadline involved?

No. There was a transition date -- when the old system was transferred over to the new, but not a deadline per se.

I'm sure we've all done this at some point BUT it was early in our PC careers and we figured things out pretty quickly.

This is just dumb.

That's a good one. On par with the people who called me trying to figure out how to find the ROM part of a CD-ROM.

See, I've clicked on screenshots before; on the Macintosh when I was trying to document the Network Preferences and the Locations for other staff here. So I know that a screenshot can be confusing.

However, each time I've done it, it's only taken me a few seconds to work it out and fix things. It would never have gotten to the point of me having to call Help Desk for it.

I can't really laugh at this. Why? Well, one time I was looking to change my desktop back to something I had had it as before.

EE: "Hmm, let's see here. Ah, 'desktopXXXXX.jpg', there it is." *Changes desktop to this image* (XXXXX was a date of some kind)

What I had actually changed it to was a SCREENSHOT of my previous desktop. Panic briefly ensued when none of my icons worked, until I eventually figured out what I had done.

My guess is that because she'd interpreted something else as a deadline-- she was panicking.

I can't even drive and I know where to put the gas!

Neither can I. Then again, that might be because I'm 15...

*BZAP* Ow! Seriously, you'd think they'd realize it was a picture sometime.

Then again, these are the same people who get tricked by phishing emails. So.... bleh.
