Let's see... I know the first part of the GDR (east Germany) anthem...

Also the European one, or at least the (original, since it is a Beethoven composition with Text based on Schiller, as far as I know) German text ...

Freude, schöner Götterfunken
Tochter aus Elysium
wir betreten feuertrunken
Himmlische, dein Heiligtum.
Deine Zauber binden wieder
was die Mode streng geteilt
alle Menschen werden Brüder
wo dein sanfter Flügel weilt.

Wem der große Wurf gelungen
eines Freundes Freund zu sein
wer ein holdes Weib errungen
mische seinen Jubel ein
Ja, wer auch nur eine Seele
sein nennt auf dem Erdenrund
Und wer's nie gekonnt, der stehle
weinend sich aus diesem Bund.

I am unsure whether there are more verses to it, but that's all I remember right now. _¬

Your what now?

Basically, it's the school's song (when used in that context).

I only know the first verse of mine, but I think that's all anyone really knows.

My public school had us pledge allegiance every day; I refused, noting that there was nothing forcing me to. From that point on I made lotsa mouth movements and no singing; like badly dubbed Kung Fu.

Lessee... this is what comes to mind.

We all live in the USA
This place truly free
There are Big Macs everywhere
But where is liberty?

......That's not it.

Sweet Land of Liberty
Of theee I.. .uhhh ... sing?
Bombs bursting in air
Oh the rocket's red glare
But The flag was still there
Blah blah blah

Beats me. Then again, I plan to move to Japan, so it won't do me much good there either.

No, but I still know the St John's Cadet Code of Chivalry:

I promise:
To serve God
To be loyal to my Sovereign and my Officers
To observe the mottos of the Order, which are:
pro fide, for the faith
pro utilitatae hominum, for the service of mankind
To be thorough in work and play
To be truthful and just in all things
To be cheerful and prompt in all I do
To help the suffering and the needy
To be kind to all animals

I had to recite that at the end of every training thingo... We used to goof off and say the line "to be cheerful and prompt in all I do" in a sing-song voice.

National Anthem: easy.
The University of Toledo alma mater: whuzza?

I can play it on the trumpet but I don't know one word of it; same as my high school alma mater.

I can play it on the flute, too. It's very easy to remember... I learned it years ago and can still picture it on paper in my head.

I also learned this "national anthem for dummies" in elementary school, which pretty much changed the words to make it more understandable (and it rhymed!). So yeah... I definitely know it.

I'm convinced that they teach you how to sing the anthem in elementary school then just have you sing it at random intervals for the rest of your life.

(We sang it every day in elementary, and then in high school... yeah.)

During Football and Basketball seasons, I play it (on average) at least once a week. And I believe I know most of the lyrics.

But damn, I can play it on Trombone, not nearly as many people can do that.

Not the American one, sorry ! But if I can remember back home it was...

Kimi ga yo wa
Chiyo niachiyo ni
Sazare ishi no
Iwao to narite
Koke no musu made

君が代は
千代に
八千代に
細石の
巌となりて
苔の生すまで

The romanji was from heart, I had to look up the characters only because I don't have a keyboard that does them very well...but when I looked them up I saw I was correct I'm sort of happy I guess..

Only the first verse.

Yeah, I got it drilled into me in middle school... I only heard it every day for about 3 years ;

Speaking of other countries national anthems -- I'm reminded that a lot of people (overseas and otherwise) think that our national anthem is a different song to the one it actually is

I don't really know the anthems of other nations; but I've seen the first few lines of the US one on TV and in movies a lot...

I know:

- the Canadian national anthem in French, and English. (Not God Save the Queen.. I don't even know the tune of that one. >>)

- a few lines of the US national anthem, and most of the tune.. xD

- the first line and a couple random ones of the Swiss national anthem. :o ..Which I probably also butcher horribly.

We had to sing the national anthem every day at the beginning of school from kindergarden to gr. 8, alternating between French and English, so that explains that. The few lines of the US anthem is from catching bits of it on TV, and also from moving here relatively recently.. and the Swiss anthem.. my stepdad used to sing it in an overly goofy pompous voice sometimes, to make us laugh. ?

Let's see if I can...

----------

Can't escape it ain't no use in tryin'
No exception, love will leave you crying too
Till you're a broken man, poor you

The day you see her, a lovely stranger
You only pray that soon you'll know her name
You finally touch her then you're in danger
It won't be long before you feel the pain

'Cause your emotions will overtake you
You'll look for heaven in her big brown eyes
But she's no angel and she'll forsake you
That shouldn't come as any great suprise

Passion isn't really happiness
There is trouble in her sweet caress
Lost in confusion
You'll drown in delusion
If you don't run

Get ready love will leave you cryin'
It's gonna hurt you 'til you heart is dyin'
Can't escape it ain't no use in tryin'
No exception, love will leave you crying too
Till you're a broken man, poor you

----------

.... Oh, wait, that's the opening theme to Tenchi Universe. My bad.

As Yoshi Dude said, I know what most consider to be "The National Anthem", IE its first verse. I know there are several more that aren't sung anymore, though, but I wouldn't be able to sing them for you.

I remember the first verse, I think..

Ja vi elsker dette lander som det stiger frem
Furet værbitt over vanner, med de tusen hjem
Elsker, elsker det og tenker
På vår far og mor
Og den saganatt som senker
Drømmmer på vår jord

~~

Well, the first verse is pretty much what everyone remembers anyway. Also, I'm kind of drunk, but not to much this time, believe it or not. So, that's my excuse.

I know O Canada in both English and French, thank you very much.

Technically speaking, our royal anthem IS God Save the Queen, but that's rarely if ever sung so I don't know it. (It's sung whenever the Queen visits but aside from that...)

I wouldn't go that far, but I think it's a little disappointing that more people don't know it. I mean... what do they do at major sporting events?

I think a documentary I saw had Americans being asked to sing their National Anthem -- they couldn't. But they could tell us what was on a Big Mac. That might have been Super Size Me come to think of it.

/: Ja, Jag vill leva, Jag vill dö i Norden :/
