I usually put funny tags on suspicious images, have you not learned that yet?

I don't do theories. I do things... that are... true. Yeah.

Funny alt-tags are awesome, you should try them sometime.

Hey, I just want to say that the spambot-defeating thingy with the Homepage is ingenius and super-effective against spambots, apparently.

Also, what's that big number that's slowly lowering itself?

[edit: nevermind it's just the fourth doomclock everyone just ignore it]

I fear if it gets well-known, bot writers will code around it and it won't work anymore.

Well, it's either /. or Digg, so you either get nazi editors or buddy-buddy users.

I'm going to throw a party at 1000 (and probably submit it to /. or something after writing up a quick "how-to" with some examples)...

...looking at it it doesn't seem like it'll be very long

Yes, they get paid for this. And in the event that a bot can't do the work, there are people who get paid to manually spam on forums and such too.

I guess the bots can figure it out by looking for input fields and textarea boxes, and common input names ... but they still have to find the page for posting, trying every link wouldn't work too well

I wonder if there's a way to confuse them by using random meaningless names or switching them around ... or maybe if you use the invisible field trick for posting too, in case they don't get fooled when registering ... I also noticed they've posted polls that don't make much sense

Wouldn't it be fun to go to an online gambling site, register, and say "Hey! I just got a shot at playing this new hack of Super Mario World on the latest version of ZSNES for Windows!!!! If you wanna try this out yourself, you can come here and play as long as you want for FREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"?

We aren't really. Most of them (bots) are generic enough that you can just change a few variables and they work with any random board.

How do they even work?

They look around the internet for message boards (from a list probably), register, and spam. The spambots always filling in a home page is what gets them automatically banned.

They can't possibly have unique code in them for Acmlm's, can they?

Sure they can, but most programmers don't care about one board when there are tons of other ones around.

Zcf was attacked by spambots a month ago. About 100 accounts had been registered.

Fortunately, a simple query wiped every single one of them.

I think most of the time they look for commonly-used field names like title, post, etc and fill things in automatically. That's why you see a lot of bots doing dumb things like putting their subject in the Custom Thread Icon field or using BBcode that doesn't work here.
This is a long thread. Click here to view it.
