Excuse me for saying that you have no idea what you're talking about. A page on Wikipedia displays facts that many users agreed one, whereas any other page on the internet contains the facts that one user agreed to be true.

Anti-wikipedia arguments are moronic; unless you see a page at the wrong time (ie less than thirty seconds after someone replaced every "the" with "PENIS") you're getting information as accurate as anywhere else on the web.

wow, after I wrote that, I reread your sentence. I thought yous aid "I don't think wikipedia is a reliable source" but you said "they don't...". Nevermind then, but anti-wikipedia arguments are lame and therefore it's no wonder why schools block it ("YOU SEE MR. FIFTY YEAR OLD TECH GUY, ANYONE CAN EDIT IT." "okay it's blocked").

I tried Google, but it didn't really help, and the school computers have Wikipedia blocked

Quick note: A byte is 2 digits in hex. 00-FF.

Open Architecture: Computers the end-user can upgrade without having to deal with restrictions based on proprietary components.

That could probably be worded better. I think the best way to look at it is that PCs are open architecture, Macs are (close to being, if they aren't) closed architecture, video game systems (barring certain special parts) are definitely closed architecture. Hopefully you can get some kind of meaningful definition from that.

Very much so. It was a MASSIVE boost when it got cracked by the allies.

And the other improvement from a larger bitwidth (or the same thing, just in different terms) is that it allows for higher processing speeds with the same cycle time. You can get twice as much through a 64-bit pipe as you can through a 32-bit one.

I'm not quite sure how to put that very well, actually. I remember it from my computer organization class two years ago, but barely.

...That description of analog vs. digital makes little to no sense. I'd suggest something about quality of the signal and how much it degrades over distance. Possibly how the analog carries the raw signal while digital has it converted to data which is decoded on the receiving end?

Simplest for bits and bytes: A bit is a single hardware state, either 1 or 0. A byte is 8 bits, commonly represented in hexadecimal. However, it can be represented in any numbering system.

Data represented in the forum of numbers, there are 8 bits to a byte. Bytes can be represented in either hexadecimal or binary format.

That's the only one I can be sure of.

Ok, not really. But I do need some help. I've searched and haven't found anything. Can somebody check these answers for me, and maybe help with the unanswered ones? It's for my computer class, and I need to finish it and send it via e-mail by 12:00 AM tomorrow. I need someone to check my answers and help me with the rest. Can somebody help?

1. What is a mainframe?

Pascal created a calculating machine at the age of 18, and his theories have affected a lot of scientific research.

Boole founded a mathematics school and began to develop symbolic logic.

Babbage began developing a number of claculating machines and created a steam-powered analytical machine.

Atanasoff created the first digital computer called the Atanasoff-Berry Computer with his partner Clifford Berry. (Oh wow, no idea where the name came from =P )

8. What is the difference between analog and digital?

Analog on a phone or TV or anything that requires a signal, transfers the raw signal and degrades over distance, meaning lower phone sound quality, or in a TV, a lower picture quality, and usually needing usage of an antenna. While digital, on the other hand, converts that signal into data, and then decodes it once it reaches the receiving end.

9. What was the “ENIGMA”?

The ENIGMA was a portable cipher machine used to encrypt and decrypt secret messages. It was a rotor-based machine that was used in World War II and Nazi Germany.
