The GBA doesn't have any native 3D hardware, but has scaling and rotation of backgrounds and sprites. It's also ~4x as fast as the SNES and has twice as much RAM, and the carts can be much bigger, so software 3D is slightly more feasible than it was on SNES.

The Triforce in LTTP would consist of maybe 24 triangles, with no textures, lighting, hit detection etc, so I think a stock SNES could probably pull it off if it weren't too busy.

The spinning Triforce at the start of Link to the Past is a proper 3D model, is it not?
Pretty sure that Hyrule Magic can even edit that baby.

Beats me. I'm just kinda asking if there's a chip in the GBA that's similar to the SNES's FX function.

The Gameboy Color obviously can't do so, but I would think the GBA is at least capable of performing a similar operation, although I'm not sure. I'm certain it has an engine similar to the SNES's Mode 7, but as for a piece of code that mirror's the FX chip, I don't know, as I don't recall a single GBA game playing like that.

I suppose, but this thread should have been pretty much over. Looking at starfox, I guess the Snes could (poorly) create 3D models, but it doesn't seem as though the gameboy could.

I think the GBA graphics system was at least inspired by the SNES, but other than that there's no real relation among any. They just use the best hardware they have that can make a decently powerful, reasonably priced handheld.

Although they can be compared, I can't say they're based off of each other, especially the DS (touch screen isn't screaming, "N64!!!"). Same could be said for GBA; not only did it have a different screen resolution, but was also 32-bit and had a better sound card (thus more compatibility of voices, as well as... "better" sounding music, although I'm unsure if that's the correct word). Plus, all those handhelds you mentioned are going to be superior to the systems you compared them to, because they were made at a later time period, thus more technology, more ram, and more ideas.

The SNES didn't do it by itself, Star Fox had the FX chip in it.

Pretty sure GBC is far more powerful than NES. It had much more RAM and ~4 to 8 times the CPU speed, and a second background layer (which unfortunately was quite useless due to its lack of transparency).

They draw the track in a top-down view in mode 7, then use HDMA (I think) to fake a 3D perspective by distorting the layer into a trapezoid. Throw in some backgrounds on other layers, sprites designed to look like 3D models, and voila, pseudo-3D. F-Zero did this too.

I looked into it and well, I guess it could have in theory, but the thing had modes 0-7. None of them were capable of rendering a true 3D structure, though 7 did create quite an illusion. Technology hadn't quite advanced to that point, I guess, which gives me another thought. Was the Gamboy Advanced based solely on the Snes?

Looking at it this way, I can't believe I didn't see it before.

It could, it would just be really slow. Later systems had hardware acceleration that was built to handle 3D models. The snes would have had to do it all in software which takes a lot more time and it has a slow cpu to begin with.
