It could also be short for "Alfred" or "Alfonz" / "Alphonse" or "Alec" or "Alex"....

Wasn't it short for "Albert"?

Well... I must revise my statement

When faced with the letters AI and it is understood that they are both capital letters, one who has nerd traces will think of Articial Intelligence. In certain people, the perception will be that of a name "AL," which is short for "ALAN."

Actually, everytime I see the title of this thread I think "AL"

which makes me think who al is =(

Well, a such system might work as long it's not capitalism. Then Capitalism dosen't work without customers... so yeah. :p

Makes me wonder if any truly advanced computer would devolop souls or even feeling. Someone even proposed that a truly sentient computer devolop feelings on it's own. Maybe as a part of survival too... since feelings apparently have a purpose in the evolution.

AI mostly fits for repetive tasks anyway, and still there needs to be human watching. Computers as we make them today are awful at handling unexpected situations.

Huh...

And here I'm an advocate of total human replacement by AI followed by a death of the labor market and an eventual crash into helplessness. I figure it'll teach us all a lesson about letting technology advance out of control of the common populace. Anyone can use a hammer. When you give people who don't know how to use a computer something like Myspace and HTML overrides, you end up with pure shit.

What do you mean "control computers" ? As in some kind of AI-assisted VNC/RDP session?

I suppose that could be helpful in the case of a lot of the more standard calls I get, but generally I have to be training a caller when I'm showing them over VNC, so I dunno, the AI'd need to be good at slowing down for the end user...

I prefer to control computers. Modified correctly, one could make it much easier to respond to calls, allowing call center employees to take more than one at a time. You see, I think total A.I. would be wasteful; but human + machine has been the combination that seems to work best, in my opinion.

As for A.I. replacing you, eh; A.I. is wonky. Just watch it go in video games. It may beat you at first, but no A.I. has managed to keep up with me throughout my entire experience; for example, even the Darksims in Perfect Dark would stupidly stand by doors and let me camp them to death, wheras humans would go 'FU BUDDY' and launch a grenade at me.

nope, nope... I'm sure it has happened at some point (the show is wild wild WILD), but I was just talking about the letters in the title. Before I clicked on it, I was trying to figure out what in the world you meant... not being replaced by American Idol.

Aww... *hugs* I just thought there'd be some wacky anecdote about some American Idol starlet screaming about being replaced by something....

aww... that's it?

I was hoping for a more interesting explanation That's fairly dull.

Well, generally when I say "AI", I'm referring to artificial intelligence

Am I the only one that read the title and thought of American Idol?

But yeah... automated help desks drive me crazy. It's much much nicer having an actual person there that can understand better and generally do a better job helping you.

I don't even know what you mean with that Americal Idol thing

American Idol is a show about a bunch of people Lost on this island. It's really bizarre.

XD
wtf dude, that's Lost.

American Idol is a singing competition show -- called AI by quite a few people because of the name. American Idol.
