There are some pretty hip Esperanto language bands that I've listened to.
Also, there are some Ukrainian pop groups, like Ruslana, that are decent. There are also some Ukrainian rock bands out there. Little difficult to find. I also listened to a Persian rock band a few weeks back. I'd need to bug my buddy Darius to translate the name for me. |

Latin American Rock like Bersuit Vergabarat, Molotov, Café Tacuba/Tacvba, Aterciopelados, Moenia (more eletronic than rock, but eh), Maná (their old stuff), Maldita Vecindad, El Tri, Ilia Kuryaky y los Valderramas, etc. |

Pretty much all the music I listen to is foreign-language music. Then again, English is a foreign language to me. 
Seriously, though, if I were to recommend some Norwegian-language artists, I guess I couldn't leave out the "Big 4": DumDum Boys, DeLillos, Raga Rockers, and Jokke & Valentinerne. Of these, Raga and DumDum are my favorites, Jokke & Valentinerne is the music-snob's favorites, and DeLillos are probably the biggest sellers. Kaizers Orchestra has become quite big since their debut in 2001. I think they're the Norwegian-language band that has had the most sales internationally ever. Now I can't go mentioning Norwegian-language music without mentioning Gatas Parlament. Of course, the charm of this rap-act is not so much the music, but the lyrics, so it probably wouldn't be too interesting to outsiders. The boys in Gatas Parlament grew up going to "communist camp", and their lyrics are basically incredibly left-wing, which makes for fun listening. |

Rhapsody ... seriously, what language do they sing in? Sometimes it sounds like English, sometimes it doesn't. I'd say its maybe their accents, but the again 90% of metal I listen to is European, and basically every other band I listen to I can clearly hear what they're saying regardless of being European. |

Sure, it's in English, but the Klezmatics (I think) did a spiffy cover of Woody Guthrie's "Mermaid Avenue" for a tribute album this year. See what happens when you get musical tips from NPR? (Shit, I'm getting old.)
Anyway, Kinky will laser your SOUL. Look up "Mas" if you're wondering where you've heard them before. Spanish... well, not totally electronic, as there's plenty of traditional instrumentation, but they're better than you. |

Ah... for a second there I thought you might have been talking about Klezmeritis -- they were guests on Spicks and Specks tonight, "klezmerising" songs for the "Look What They Did To My Song" game.
I somehow managed to guess "Stairway to Heaven" and "Take Me Out" (Franz Ferdinand) and I don't know how 
I listen to some music in foreign languages; but generally not a whole lot, I just tend to listen to whatever happens to turn up on JJJ -- which sometimes includes some French stuff. |

I love metal, and listen to a good bit of European metal... but most of it is in English. I do listen to some Japanese rock though, and also rap and pop in German. I listen to a lot of Celtic music in Gaelic too. I don't need to understand the words for a song to be fun or soothing or beautiful. |

At the moment I'm on a "music in other languages" kick, probably a result of spending a lot of time listening to Spanish language rock like La Portuaria, and Yiddish-language weirdos the Klezmatics, lately.
So yeah I'm looking for good music, in various languages obscure or otherwise... be it Finnish indie rock, Esperanto folk songs, or whatever. I don't like metal and I don't like electronic music but beyond that it's pretty open slather. Surely some of you can help? |
