It's better off that way. First and foremost the game prices would shoot way up, and second I think extension chips take away the novelty of truly utilizing the hardware to its fullest. |

GBA could use cartridge add-ons, but it's really only been used for solar sensors, tilt sensors, and rumble packs :/ |

Huh, I always thought the GBA couldn't use polygons so I thought a GBA port of Star Fox wouldn't be possible. So the GBA is capable of using 3D polygons? From the hardware itself or, I doubt, something inside the games like the FX chips? |

GBA has the potential to sound a lot better than the SNES, as it has no real restrictions for sample size and amount of channels. It just didn't work that way in practice as there wouldn't be much resources left for the rest of the game. As for streaming, I know there are homebrew MP3 players for it. I'm not a very technical person so I don't know if that's streaming per se, but it's more or less the same thing. As for the Star Fox discussion, the GBA beats the SNES by a long shot in that department as well. Just check out V-Rally, it has fully textured polygons at a very good framerate. It looks nearly as good as an early 32-bit era game. I believe there was nearly a port of Quake as well, I saw a tech demo a few years back. Oh, and I also saw a demo of a full 3D GTA-style game from the same guys. If someone can dig up the site, I'd be grateful. Originally posted by PrincessPeach Meh, the Doom port to GBA sucked. Worse than the port to SNES. DSDoom wins; though a GP2X version might benifit due to the system being more powerful. SL64: GBA SP, GBM, and GBA mode on the DS are all the same as the original capability-wise. |

I have both the GBA and SNES versions of Super Mario World. The GBA can't keep the graphics going at best quality without battery consumption. Is it any differant on a GBA SP, or are graphics the same? |

The GBA would be fulla capable to run a port of starfox. Yoshi's Island, wich is really nice ported and only features a few slowdowns here and there, uses the FX2 chip, wich just two Super FX chips in tandem.
Also was Doom ported to GBA. So if Nintendo would have done it, it would look better than the SNES-one. But in the sound-departement, quality wise, the SPC700 of the SNES is way better than the GBA, only drawback is, that it does not really support direct streaming from the cart. (Maybe to some extend, I never saw it widely used (Tales of Phantasia maybe). But GBA-Games overall lack of good sound quality, is due to that Sound on the GBA draws on resources for the rest of the game, similar to the N64. |

Now watch someone boast about his computer with eight terabits now... getting t wrong again. xD
From a technical standpoint CPU whoops the SNES. Some devolopers are a bit lazy about music when they port sadly. :/ The GBA should be able to make something like Starfox for SNES with textures and probably with more polygons. But for 3D games, there's DS now so... And the 16-bit processor of SNES have some limiations, such as no native way of division. The 68HC11 processor I programmed for have as much megahertz as SNES, but beats SNES i raw power becuse it had native instructions that the "whatever SNES's processor name was" didn't have. Originally posted by TanksActually, from the demons I seen, it's very much possible. Hell the first leaked GBA demon had a spinning Yoshi island thing as intro. Fully textured and all. I'm not surprised if Nintendo was considering a Starfox port at some point. |

I don't think it's so much the system as it is the games themselves. |

Would it be possible to port starfox to a gba? No. There is another reason why the snes is better. Even if you needed upgrades for the snes, the gba can't reach the highest level of upgrade that the snes had. Sure it was in convenient to have but it still beats the gba.
PS what was that chip called? I think it was the Super FX but I can't remember. |

GBA is definately more capable. The problem here is that people just love to compare systems by using ports. The GBA had lots and lots of SNES ports. And they almost always turn out inferior no matter what system you put it on. You're supposed to look at the games that were made from scratch with the chosen hardware in mind.
And then there's the thing with SNES games having to rely on external chips to really do anything noteworthy. The vanilla CPU pretty much crippled the system.
The most technicly impresive games still came out on the regular system, so that's no argument really. |

My friend and I used to have a little joke where we would talk about the "SNESP" and everyone would gather around us and ask us about it. In the end we pull out our GBA's and show them the SNESP. But personally I think that the snes wins due to the fact that you can't use the a super scope on GBA now can you... |

Well, at least you don't have to install a freakin' Sega 32X for extra capability like that other system. |

I would say that both are about equal in classical 2D applications.
But the GBA has more potential right out of the box, while the SNES needs additional chips to get really ass kickin' and takeing names. |
