A new forum for hacked games. For instance, there should be a post in the appropriate hacking forum, saying the person is making a hack, and people can comment, etc. Then, when it is released, the thread should be closed, and a disscussion thread should be made in the hacked games forum.

This is just an idea.
Not that your solution is that bad, but you take as a prerequisite that people who come here know what they're doing, and that they will act intelligently and read first, post later. This is only true half the time. No, the simplest and most effective way to end stupidity in the ROM hacking forum (if administration deems it as too high of a level) would be to make it read-only. I've seen no evidence to the contrary.

And by the way, I see you like Firefox, but why don't you try viewing your layout in IE? It takes up more than 100 freaking percent of the viewing space in my browser for just a small paragraph. Rethink it, please, and try again because right now its just too damn tall.

We've got some more idiots posting in rom hacking again. Most of them just for VL's editor. I did notice that the approvals for SMW and POKE' MON have died down. Does this mean that we could try to make rom hacking approval only?

The fact of the matter is that there are plenty other places to release a hack and have casual users discuss it. The Super Metroid redesign thread, while that is an awesome hack (hell I even did some minor contribution to the hack) is getting annoying since it doesn't really provide me with any further rom-hacking insight. In that sense, it really belongs in General Gaming at this point b/c all the posting has to do with players getting stuck at various points and in general just asking gameplay questions. If you look at Gamefaqs, most of the questions on the Super Metroid board right now are about Super Metroid Redesign. If they can't post here they will post somewhere else.

I do, quite often, listen to other people's opinions. It's when people can't back up their opinions with anything other than "It would inconvinience me because I am an idiot" that I start attacking them.

(case in point, if I followed only my opinions, I would've gutted about ten other forums and merged/deleted them, but the discussion we had elsewhere proved to bring up good reasons to keep some of the original layout)

But hey, who cares? It's much more fun to have an "elite" club of hackers, and get shot of people who might not know things about hacking yet, and who dare to inquire about such things.

If I was thinking rationally I would tell you to shut the fuck up, because I (and several others) have said that anyone who shows at least SOME initiative to learn how to do ROM hacking or has some genuinely good questions (e.g. things that aren't answered in stickies or the help file(s)) would get approved anyway.

The goal of the system is to keep out people who have no initiative, or want to do no work for themselves. n00bs are bad, newbies are fine. There is a large difference.1

I've been considering a lot of changes, and your (and everyone who keeps saying DONUT MAKE THE ROHZMAKING 4UMS APPROEV ONELY) inability to grasp this insanely simple concept is making me want to just disregard your opinions unitl you can understand mine without butchering it, even after 47 corrections.

I'm sick and tired of all of you whining dipshits constantly shooting an idea down because of your inability to understand the motive and execution of this solution. Until you actually come up with something better (and before you get a spiked club shoved up your ass for suggesting "have the mods do their job", most of them are sick and tired of how much utter crap gets posted in there daily), kindly shut the fuck up.

1 n00b is a derogatory name for an idiot, newbie is someone who is actually new

Just because I don't agree with your execution, doesn't mean I don't understand your motives.

But go ahead, do whatever it is you want. (not like you weren't going to anyways) I'm tired of pissing against the wind of stupidity that seems to inhabit this forum.

Oh yeah, one last thing, I think you need to learn how to speak to someone with a different opinion than yourself. Calling people "dipshits", and telling them to "shut the fuck up" shows a complete lack of respect for people with differing opinions.

I always thought that newbies were there to learn and n00b there to have you do their hack for them so they can take credit. Or just be idiots as you said.

But seriously. If someone went to the trouble of making a grandoise hack that was good. Getting approval... is that really going to be so hard for them? By that point in time, it's more like it'll be a tiny last little hurdle to be jumped. If they're not already apoproved.

You're overlooking how much work it is for the admins to approve all these people. SMW hacking is busy enough, the admins familiar with the forum and its users are about ready to pull their hair out. Perhaps once that forum's requests are under control we can consider a similar treatment for ROM Hacking, but... that forum is certainly not as bad as SMW hacking (or pokemon hacking, for that matter). It's not out of control to the point that the staffers can't handle it.

Oh lord! help1 today has had the most noobish posts! help! make rom hacking approval only please.

PS will we all need to be approved or is it only noobs?

Edit: this guy named wynaut keeps asking for roms. weve got to stop all this noobness. A lot of noobs want to post to ask if we can give them roms, but if we make the approval system then they wont be able to get in.

What about people who come to post one simple question or some feedback about a hack? They don't post. Or they attempt to get approval, with a thread like "Can I have approval to leave some feedback about a hack?". Somehow I don't see a person getting approval with that.

And let's be blunt, the primary reason that people realise their hack on a messageboard is to have other people play the hack, and get feedback. This system removes that ability for casual posters. With very little feedback, people can become despondent.

First of all, in a forum such as this, it is not the quantity of posts in a topic that makes it good; it is the quality of said posts, which I'm sure you know.

Next, how hard is it to ask for approval? It takes about 5 minutes of time to present yourself in a rational manner to help BMF tell that you're not a complete idiot. 5 minutes. It is not that much trouble, and any new person who comes here and cannot figure out how that is done (through previous examples, reading FAQ, etc.) doesn't belong here anyway. It doesn't take being a rocket scientist to be approved. I have zero pity for idiots who either can't figure out how to be approved, or who "don't feel like" being approved. Maybe if the new people give a little effort, they could be posting in ROM hacking in no time, if the approval system were implemented there.

I just don't see how people who only want to post casually can't take 5 minutes to post an approval topic. And it is even easier for those new members who have created hacks that they wish to release, because they can show off a few SS in their approval topic, draw some attention to their work, and when they release this hack in ROM hacking it will be that much more visible to the forum. The downsides are just too insignificant at this point for me to change my opinion on the subject.

EDIT: Well look what I found, more evidence: http://board.acmlm.org/thread.php?id=7715

If that doesn't qualify as a n00b thread, I don't know what does. Made by someone who is apparently learning ASM according to his approval thread. The approval system is not perfect.

This says it all. Really. Approval would be an improvement at the very least. I believe the only reason it is not read-only is because some respected members did not wish to have to be approved in order to post there, so the plan was revoked at the last minute. I'm not completely certain it is for the best, but in my opinion, the approval system would work in ROM hacking too.

Yes, that post does say it all. It was closed.

Yes it does.

SMW hackign has gotten, what, 50000000 times better since that system was installed? Now there AREN'T any more thread like "ExGFX?" and "Help!: showing up, where some idiot jsut didn't read the LM help file.

This system WORKS, and the last n00b thread in SMW hacking was actually made in the ROM hacking forums and booted over to the SMW forum.

Where? I see two "noobish" threads, both of which are closed. You will always get the odd thread or post which asks "noobish" questions. The approval system can't get rid of that.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Well, I think it needs to be too, but it isn't....yet! So I guess this is now a suggestion. I think that the ROM hacking forums should be read only until approved.

Becuase the ROM Hackign forum is not approval-only. Personally, I wish I could knowingly add 'yet' to that, but I can't.

The SMW and Pokemon hacking forums are approval-only, though.

I know that mods and admins aren't online every second of every day, but why can people without approval post in the hacking forums?
