Two words.
Chrono Trigger.
It has the best VG music I have ever heard. (And I have heard 1000+ VG songs)
Magus's theme, Crono's theme, and the over-wold for 600 AD are some of my favorites.
I also like Culex battle / FF4 Boss music as well.

The battle theme is awesome! I think I leveled up just so I could listen to it...

Man with the Machine Gun is my favorite random battle music. I only wished that they had used it as the main random battle music instead of the flashback sequences. Alas, at least it makes it special.

There's no complete soundtrack I can quite call my favourite exactly... so here's my all-time favourite VG tunes instead, in more or less chronological order of discovery:

Lufia II: Final Battle
*Secret of Mana: Give Love its Rightful Time / Mana Fortress Theme
Chrono Trigger: Sealed Door / Belthasar's Theme; Chrono Trigger / Title Theme
Seiken Densetsu 3: The Sacrifice Part III
Soul Blazer: Koibito no Inayoru / Lisa's Theme
Xenogears: Awakening
Star Fox: Ending
*Shadow of the Beast II: ingame 1 part 2
*Awesome: f1a
(yeah, songs had uncreative titles like that in Amiga times)
*Ragnarok Online: Rag All Night Long; Retro Metro; Steel Me
Legend of Mana: Aid
*Terranigma/Tenchi Souzou: Dark Side Field
*Chrono Cross: Frozen Flame; Lost Child of Time
Cave Story: Gestation; Living Waterway
*Final Fantasy Tactics: Apoplexy
Tales of Symphonia: Last Battle ~Decision~
.hack//Outbreak: str9_2 Balmung's Entry and the Virus
Rocket Knight Adventures: Stage 3
Tales of Phantasia: Premonition

The games marked with a * are the ones I consider being the closest still to having an overall "favourite of mine" soundtrack.

Chrono Cross goddammit. In close second places ties are Xenogears, FFT, and Gitaroo Man.

Anyone that has played Gitaroo Man and didn't like it DOESN'T HAVE A SOUL.

The Pokemon soundtracks would be on my list somewhere, but as for my ultimate top pick, it has to go to Tokimeki Memorial or Live-a-Live (two Japan-only games). Live-A-Live was just so...creative.
You liked Live a Live's... Soundtrack?

come on. It had many good things about it, but... The soundtrack?

...

Yeah. "Megalomania", "Fish swimming in the water, Birds flying in the air", and the final battle all were pretty great. Not to mention the near future chapter's main music, which is so funky it just demands a listen.

Remember the Wily music from Wily stages 3-4? THAT´s good music.

Amen. Let's not forget MM3's beginning and ending music, now... those truly kick ass.

Eh, I found it annoying and very repetitive. Only game I ever played with sound off the entire time, at least after the first few hours. That DFASFAFSAD siren Nintendo insists on putting in every game when you get low on health doesn't help either.

That's the case much of the time, but then there's also times where the Japanese theme is so bad there's really nothing the english theme can be BUT better (I'm looking at you, Naruto)...

Square games are generaly going to have good music anyway. D;
I disagree. Square music is better than some... Most, even... But I don't like most of it, and Live a Live's soundtrack was particularly feh.

Oh well. To each their own then. As for your comment on Naruto, I personaly don't have a problem with the opening (depending on whcih you refer to, if its the one by AKFG then yeah), the rest of that artist's music however...blah, the singer really annoys me sometimes. But I digress =P this is about videogames, so back on topic.

Videogame soundtracks in my eyes basically fall into one of two categories:

1. Ys Book I & II on the Turbo Grafx CD
2. Everything else.

Yeah, there are other great soundtracks, a lot of which have been mentioned in the topic already, but Ys I & II tops them all.

In addition to my previous posts, I also enjoy a bunch of Mario Party songs, mostly all of the songs in Yoshi Touch & Go, the Pokemon (GBP/GBC) soundtracks, the Banjo-Kazooie soundtrack..... There's just too many to count, to be honest.

Game soundtracks I can't stand, though, are the Super NES Final Fantasy soundtracks, and Ridge Racer for the PSP. They're explosions in my ear, ie. very annoying.

How about the music from Space Invaders for Gameboy color. The main theme is awesome!

I loved the music in the G/S/C games. Those are my favorite pokémon games, btw.

I liked the feeling of Mysteries in those games. Like when searching for Ho-oh.

Comon, the Poke'mon theme is like the most inspirational song ever. that being the only poke'mon song i'd listen to other than red/blue/yellow/ and green, which i have...somewhere...

The US themes sucked. All of them. This is not up for discussion. The Japanese themes I didn't mind a few of them, but honestly, for you to defend...any anime dub theme is just sad

And yes Alastor. Square games are generaly going to have good music anyway. D;

Terran theme from starcraft, Sonic Adventure DX and Sonic adventure 2: Battle!, as well as shadow the hedgehog and CT are my favorites, with a coupel tracks from Perfect Dark.

BTW, Winamp + USF/SPC Plugins + self-made recordings of the Sonic themes = , because the sonic themes loop well when you do them right.
