That's bullshit.

That's total bullshit. Think of all the shit that you find on Youtube. I refuse to pay money for the crappy games that other people will no doubt manufacture. We'll have people shopping in penis-head mods to Halo and making shitty, naked versions of Dead Rising. This won't "nurture game development talent" at all. It'll bring the quality of games even further below what it already has fallen to, and soon we'll have to play through games which are essentially nothing more than the bastardized versions of someone's home videos being hosted on iTunes.

If anything, it's a terrible analogy. But if it's something more than that, I'm scared to see what could possibly come out via Xbox Live, and what Microsoft would do not only with the licensing to such a risky venture, but also what they'd do to the content that the less mature/intelligent part of the excited populace of this target demographic will eventually come up with.

Yeah, 99$. A lot of games developed by kids are group projects, and if four 12 year old kids decide they want to try making a video game because video games are totally radical, they only have to pay 25$ each. Easily affordable.

I think it is. Think also they would have to pay for an XBox 360 and XBox Live as well.

Also, even if they had a 360 and Live, I think $99 is a perfect price to stop people from making dumb games on a whim, and will attract those who really have a game they want to get out there.

If THAT much crap leaked through, then MS wouldn't offer the kit in the first place. :\

I doubt we'll see a ton of that stuff in the Marketplace; MS wants to make money, not scare people away.

And it also keeps out thousands of brilliant ideas. Something deemed simple, or stupid, that turns out to be ridiculously fun.

Like 40 games packed into just 2 minutes of play with tasks as menial as shaking a dog's paw or cutting a roast.

Microsoft's trying to repeat what they did in the past. Provide MS-DOS and Windows development kits for cheap. Once the market is taken over because of this fact, exponentially increase the price of the development kit and make it near-impossible for individuals to look at it anymore.

Yeah, but not THAT much. I mean, look at Nintendo - if someone buys a dev kit and makes a fun little game that sells a couple of thousand copies on Wii, then they come out ahead. It's not like you're paying tens of thousands of dollars to crank out something that might flop severely.

Nintendo's apparently really big on independent content for the Wii, which is why the dev kits are apparently really cheap... aren't they $1,000 each or something? For a small company that's making a few bucks here and there, it's a small price to pay.

It's a really great move for Microsoft (and Nintendo as well if they are courting the independents), and it's probably something Sony's a bit wary on... we all remember the Yaroze. It would make SENSE for Sony to jump on the bandwagon, but knowing Sony they either won't or they'll do it a few years down the road when the bar's already been set.

Adamant: If someone's paying a few bucks for a dev kit, odds are crap won't be coming out of it at an alarmingly high level. I'm sure we'll have some games with nice graphics but crappy gameplay and some with simple graphics but great gameplay, and the gems that fall right inbetween.

I doubt this will bear any fruit. Maybe someone will create a gem of a game that will be worth buying. At the rate I play and get through games, it won't be a problem for me.

Eh, okay, then we'll have a dozen Badly Drawn Man Quest platformers with even less effort put into them than the aforementioned penis mods. That won't be much better.

Actually, if you read, supposedly MS will be handling checks for appropriateness and IP rights and such and such.

(That, and you can't mod curent games, so you won't have HALO PENIS any time soon, sorry)

Yeah, but these games you have to pay for. Sure, you'll be able to read reviews to figure out which games may be worth your money, but since the reviewers have to find the game themselves, without help, before reviewing it, it eventually boils down to SOMEONE paying for a dozen Penis Man VS Buttcrack Army Halo mods before locating a playable game.

Searching for a gold bullion in a pool filled with shit is even less desireable when you have to pay for the time spent looking, especially when you know the money will go to the people who shat in the pool in the first place.

I completely recognize the idea of sinking and floating, but that still doesn't mean we won't have to wade through the belt-high bastion of bullshit. I'd rather preserve my sanity.

Plus, what about copyrighted material being used in independent games? Even if they're awesome, you know someone will just end up making the next Halo OUT OF the next Halo. If this is being released, I'm sure as heck gonna stay away from it for a few years, both until its price goes down, and until there have been some established gems. For all we know, this could be a supreme failure.
